Applying brakes when floppin top two pair

How can I not double this guy up? Where to put on the brakes and put him on kj or a set? (Sorry for the layout, cant get the converter to work 100% with PT.)

Sets are very hard to detect…BUT, you were jamming the pot. You even bet larger than the pot on the flop and the turn. When you do that, you leave little room for the opp to tell you “you are beat, I have something better”. Because of that you couldn’t slow down. If you bet for them they have no need to raise you.

Don’t over bet the pot. They won’t raise.
Try and bet ½ to 2/3 the pot so that if they have a hand they are really proud of they can raise you.

Edit: Still, like Fnord said, two pair is not often beat by a set. Id be willing to push AI here if he decides to raise and get crazy.

In an unraised pot, over-betting and potting it a lot are reasonable lines.

I don't understand the hand history. Preflop action starts with 5 folds and then an open limp from the CO. The action post-flop is between UTG who folded preflop and hero.

Alright.. after looking at it one more time, UTG obviously limps but that part was cut off. UTG only has a 40BB stack, I don't really see how you are going to get away from top 2 in this situation. The straight possibilities could give you an excuse to aim for a cheap showdown but that would be very weak IMO. KJ and J8 aren't limping UTG in a full ring game.

I'm scared of J9 here more than I am 99. But UTG has 40bbs so I'm happy that I don't have to pay him off that big.
