I think this is fine, you gotta start opening up when the table gets shorter and the blinds get bigger relative to stacks, particularly if the table has been tight. If somebody pushes over you, you can get away from it, if you're called you're in there with a reasonable chance to win.

I dislike the raise unless the table is stupidly tight.
You're thinking big but K9s still sucks.

What are you trying to accomplish?

If you're called you're playing OOP with a very mediocre hand. If pushed into I can't see calling and you'll just have pissed away almost 20% your stack.

If you want to steal blinds this is a passable play but you've got to go through the entire table to do so.

IMO you can find a better spot.

What do you do if you're called and a K flops? How do you know you have the best hand?

yeah, I agree that this wasn't the best. 4 handed I can find a raise here, 6 handed I can't. You still have a very healthy stack (~15xBB) so I don't think you need to be putting yourself in a position where any caller leaves you facing some potentially tough decisions on the flop and beyond. Fold here and look for opportunities to pressure the blinds after the button has passed.

If I am in late position with just one or no callers I might make this move, but not from where you are.

    No need for this.

I don't hate it. You probably won't get smooth called by a worse K. May get stuck by TT if the flop comes 9 high but oh well. I will often make one last steal attempt before I am in total push fold mode. No chance you'll be able to steal after paying the blinds without being commited.

IF you make this play, you must know what you'll do if someone comes over the top.

the two shortest stacks are in the blinds and they're not in desperate shape - not a bad move. I'm assuming 3xbb bets have been taking down the blinds....

Just remember it's a steal, not a value bet. Be prepared to let it go if you get played back at or the flop comes with a King and you meet aggression - your kicker sucks. I'd make this play in the same spot, unless the table's become real loose or the two opps in the blinds have been vigoriously defending their blinds.

There's probably someone in LP just waiting to do the same steal, but will fold to your raise.

drmcboy - not sure why you think hero is in push/fold mode after paying the blinds - he has a fairly decent stack - I was viewing this as a simple steal move...

I think that it's a risky play from UTG. Just because the sb and bb are short stacked doesn't mean that they don't have a hand and they may push. I know that you said that the table is tight but, tight players wait for push opportunities late in the game. OTOH, it would look scary to the people left to act and think that you have to have a big hand in order to raise from UTG. Only if they knew what they were doing though. As others said, drop the hand if you get reraised. If called play cautiously and get ready to fold to any aggression.

On a side note, don't fold if the flop comes KK9 or 99K, or some similar variation of your hand.

if you're at 2k and raise to 500 and someone moves in for say 2k, pot is almost 3k and it's 1500 to you - there aren't many hands you're going to raise with there that you can then fold getting 2/1 coming back.

Even here in this spot you must call Papa or lynx, and folding to anyone except biggie is thin and you need a nice, tight read.

If the table is pretty tight and @ 6 players or less, I would raise UTG w/ med connectors/semi connectors. I would not with this hand because if you get called, good chance you are dominated(if a K hits). If you get called w/ Suited connectors, you may great a great flop and take down a nice pot. Ugly flop, your move failed and you can check/fold unless you think you can outplay your opponent.......

Too early for marginal steals UTG with a mediocre hand.

    I fold it.

You're stack is very healthy. The risk outweighs the reward IMO.
