I'd slow-play this one too, but I think when that jack comes on the turn you have to go ahead and end it.

check-raise flop bet to 90-120 - you're giving way too many people a free ride, and just calling is no way to build a pot. Opps obviously have something - you have a bettor and a caller already. Bump it up a little. No one will believe you have a straight here.

On turn, if you had check-raised the flop, you could be fairly confident that no one has KQ drawing to an inside straight draw - so you're still good. But JQ probably stuck around, along with any sets - and you've now got 2 to a flush - time to take it down. Bet the pot. nh.

It's so easy for a monster to become an anchor - slow-plays are good if you pretty much don't care what cards come later, but if you can be counterfeited, then build the pot early and take it down before things get real ugly...

    Konahead - Great points, thanks

Muxy and Sampsonite - There is just under 500 so you are getting over 4 to 1 on a call of 120. Do you really think that you would lose this hand more than 3 out of 4 times?

You mean on the river? I don't know, I think it's pretty clear you're beat, but odds-wise you may be right. In my previous post I was talking about betting big on the turn.

    call on the end.

Kona is correct on the betting.

OK, so we have established that I have played this hand poorly so far and that a call on the river is the correct call (although most likely a crying call).

Unfortunately, I was sooooo busy kicking myself in the ass that I simply folded the hand instead of looking at the pot odds. To add insult to injury.......

    GATORJERRYH - Folds
    DIESEL4444 - returned ($120) : not called
    *** SHOW DOWN ***
DIESEL4444 - Shows [Jh 5h] (One pair, jacks)
DIESEL4444 Collects $375 from main pot

I now PROUDLY nominate this hand as - "One of the worst hands played by a FlopTurnRiver Poster in 2006".

"Say Goodnight Alice." " Goodnight Alice"

you have to call that. come on.
Playing big pots at small stakes.

The irony here is that if you just called the river, you'd have played it right.

I mean, a little cute, but if you raise big anywhere here, you will probably get folds.

In this instance, I think a small (1/2 pot) raise on the flop represents that you caught a small pair from the bb. People with overs call more often than you think, as does anyone with a real hand. The point being that you are building the pot so that you can justify bigger bets later in the hand. When someone hits their over, they assume that they now have the best hand, and are ready to pay you off. Check raising isn't a good line because it gives away your strength. If the pot was bigger, and you had a reason to believe that you would be raised if you checked, then it makes a little more sense. I just think slowplaying is overrated until you reach the higher blind levels/shorthanded.
