    Default Bet size question

I was playing Saturday in a Sng and fairly early in the tourney this situation comes up. I made a straight on the turn out of EP. The pot was $720 and I was first to act. I bet $550 into it and everyone folds except the button who had limped. The straight card also put a flush draw on the board, so my goal was either to take the pot down right there or make the flush draw pay too much to draw. The board was not paired so I wasn't worried about the Full House yet either. My opponent thought for a minute, said "nice overbet" and folded. Well this started a discussion (which I stayed out of mostly) about whether or not it was the right sized bet or not. Opponent said that if I thought I had the best hand I should have only bet half the pot. Other people said it was the right play. My question is this, with the board as I described, would you guys go ahead and take the pot right there, or do you price the opponent in to let him draw? Am I leaving chips on the table by making this bet, or was it the right play?

What are the blinds? It makes a difference to the answer.
Also, what were the starting stacks and how much do people have behind right now?

Blinds at that point were 15/30. Starting stacks $1500. It was early enough where eveyone was pretty well bunched up. Opponent had about $1400 and I had about $1600.

I take it down then just like you did. That is a large pot for those blinds.

$550 into a $720 pot is not an overbet.
Playing big pots at small stakes.

but he is, fish usually bet at least the pot, if not wayyyy more than the pot, but they usually do it with marginal holdings. thats one of the nice things about them.

Fish are very passive and bet weakly even when they have the nuts. Then on the river card they go all-in.
Fish base there bet on the size of the blinds. So if there is $400 in the pot and the blinds are 15/30 a fish will bet $60-$90 and increase by $30 every street. They have no clue what pot odds are.

youve never seen a fish push AI into a $150 pot? ive seen it many times. or bet 300 into a 90 pot with nothing as a steal attempt. thats my favourite.

Once the pot is 1/2 my stack, I don't want to give draws bad odds, I want to just take it down. If the pot is small and against 1 opp, I bet 1/2 pot, giving opp 3-1 odds on his 4-1 (flush) or 5-1 (OESD) draws. I bump it up to pot-sized if against more than one opp.

In this case, the pot's half your stack. Take it down. Good bet.
