rebuy tourneys, any tips?
I have been playing poker for only six months, but have read a lot on the subject and played regularly and I have had some decent results, such as winning an 80 player NL hold ‘em tourney at my local casino. The problem I have is playing in low cost NL tournaments (£5 or £10 tourneys with 90 minutes of unlimited rebuys). I find that during the rebuy stage, the skill level involved drops significantly. Many players seem to play like crazy and go all in with rubbish but frequently hit lucky; or they call raises with rubbish, miss the flop, stay in the hand and then hit lucky. My usual style of playing is to play aggressively and I win a lot of pots by betting heavily and making others throw away drawing hands and marginal hands, but of course this will not succeed during the rebuy stage when players will not fold as they know they cannot be eliminated from the tournament. I’m not sure whether these players are “fish” or whether they are playing an effective strategy. If they are fish, then I understand the way to beat them is to acquire the best hand and bet it all the way, as they are likely to call all the way, but acquiring the best hand seems difficult! I guess I prefer freeze out tournaments and probably play better against stronger opposition, but these tend to cost about £100 to enter and this is a bit beyond me at present. I honestly feel I could beat most of the fishy players in a freeze out where everyone starts level, but the rebuy tourneys seem to be becoming a bit of a lottery. Any tips for playing in such tourneys? Maybe I should follow the lead of others!
