First tourney...need some analysis

[Habris]

Hi all...this was my first SnG tournament. I have been studying alot and thought today was a good time to give it my first try. I would appreciate any advice on leaks and techniques anyone might have.
Just as a note on reads...Fernherder was tight but aggressive early and quickly started dominating. I found it difficult to widdle away his stack...stole lots of blinds. Thanks much! Early hands ommited as they were pre-flop folds.

Hi and welcome to FTR! I've found this the best way to improve my game, the folks here are great. Apologies in advance if my comments seem a little harsh, I have in the past made many of the mistakes that you've made in this game and the frank feedback really helped me improve.

Overall comments - early on when the blinds are small, you're calling with too many marginal hands - Ax, even if suited, is a fold at the early levels. Also, DON'T MINBET/MINRAISE - this accomplishes nothing. If you want to bet/raise, do it like you mean it. Remember that after the flop, your bet sizes need to be in proportion to the chips already in the pot, betting 30 chips into a 450 pot is a total waste of time - you're not getting anybody to fold and if you have a good hand, why not extract more value from it!

4. Ac6c - Fold preflop, no need to take risks with this hand early in the game. As played, check/fold it down. If you want to bet, don't minbet - bet it like you mean it - you only bet 20 into a 120 pot. On the turn you got very lucky, there is a heart flush draw out there, bet the pot (180), minbetting is bad. You've probably got the best hand, get more money in the pot! Ditto on the river.

10. As8d - Fold preflop.

15. JhTh - You are under the gun here, fold.

17. AhKs - Very badly played IMO. Why do you only complete the SB here? RAISE to 120! If everybody folds, you've won 90 chips with no risk. If you get called, bet half to 2/3 the pot as a continuation bet. On the flop, I think the check-raise is bad here, I would lead out, but if you want to check raise then raise like you mean it to at least 300! On the turn you've probably got the best hand s0 WTF is the minbet, there is 450 in the pot, bet more (say 400)! Again on the river, lead out more. You could have taken way more from your opp here.

27. Jd9d - Fold preflop. As played, you're getting odds to call the flop bet to chase your flush so I would probably call to see the turn card.

34. TT - Don't minraise! I raise this to 3x BB (300) - probably would not have made a difference here since everybody folded but why let the BB in for cheap? If the BB has Ax and calls due to the good odds on the call and hits an A on the flop you could lose a big pot. Also, I never show - why give info to your opponents?

35. AdJd - Against the short stack, I don't think there's a way to get away from this. I would have raised to 300 preflop (again, don't minraise!), the shortstack would have pushed AI, I would have called, same result.

40. As3d - I fold this UTG, but again, if you want to raise, raise to 300. I think you were very lucky here that nobody had a better ace.

42. KhQc - With a huge (6x BB) raise and a call in front, I fold this. No way you are ahead preflop. Remember that you need a much stronger hand to call a raise than to raise yourself, particularly when there is also a caller in front of you also signalling strength. If there was just one raiser, I might consider pushing over with KQo but remember that KQo is an underdog heads up to ANY ace, even A2. As played, you got a little unlucky that the A that made your straight also made opp's flush, but you were still behind on the turn.

Just a couple of notes...a good starting hand, is just that - AK is just A high unless unimproved. KK is the second best hand - but is vunerable when a A hits the board. There is no need to reraise with AK after the flop - you should be doing this when you are in front - before the flop.

As from the previous comment - bet like you mean it. Poker is a game of decisions....you want to make the right decisions while making you opponents decisions difficult. You make your opponents decisions difficult by betting, but min-betting does not do this - you have to make bets that are within 1/3 - pot size bets (for the most part) to put your opponents to the test.

Also, I've tried to explain the thoughs behind each decision, rather than just giving you the "standard" way of playing it.. Let me know if you'd like me to elaborate.

To add:

No. 4 is a fold preflop; weak aces can get you into a ton of trouble, especially out of posiion. What happens if someone raises behind you? What if one of the limpers behind you had A8?

And if you're going to be bet like you mean it.

No. 10. Fold preflop again; As an inexperienced player it's just easiest to fold here. Once you feel more comfortable or experienced you could try raising here as you have position but that's definitely tricky and for now... I'd just fold... and the HH kind of reinforces that.

15. Fold preflop, especially because you're out of position. Let me ask you this. Why are you playing this hand? What are you trying to achieve? This is not a trick question, but if your answer is "the TV guys say JTs is a pretty decent hand!" your approach is wrong.

It's difficult to play drawing hands out of position and JTs is a neat hand because it can draw to all sorts of nice strong straights.

That said, you got the sort of flop you want with this hand - a draw to a straight.

You can lead bet the flop or even turn BUT THIS IS DIFFICULT OUT OF POSITION. In any event, you have to call the turn bet because it's so small (read up on pot odds and drawing before playing another SnG. Seriously.). Otherwise, why are you playing this hand?



17. Ooogly. AK is an unmade hand it it plays very poorly against multiple players. Ideally you want this hand heads up because if you hit on the flop, you hit top pair, top kicker - a pretty good hand.

Also keep in mind that even if you miss the flop, your opponent probably missed too (chances of pairing unpaired hole cards on the flop is ~ 33%).

35. Why do you raise AJ here and not AK earlier?

40. WTS? Fold this OOP turkey preflop...

42. KQ is pretty solid, especially shorthanded. However you always should be careful playing it into a raise as you're automagically behind any Ace.

As taipan mentioned this is a raise for half your stack and at this point it shouldn't really be call and see a flop because you don't have enough chips for any postflop betting - basically any postflop bet means you're putting everything in the middle.

If you're determined to play this hand (a tricky call), go AI preflop.
