    Default 11s - HU Analysis Request

    Played a $11 PP sng last night, came in second, didn't feel super confident about my HU play. Wondering if anyone would mind taking a look at the hands (about 25) and giving me their opinion? I'm new to the board, but it seems like a lot of hands to post, so I thought I'd PM them to someone, or direct e-mail the .txt file.

    Thanks,

    Zook

    Forgot to mention that I'd be eternally grateful!

    Best bet sometimes is to just post them - you should get a couple of people go though them

    Also remember that the tournament leading up to the HU period does set the tone for the endgame. Sometimes your image of being weak or passive or even cautious can make them just run you over HU

    Yea, post it here and I will make some comments, not saying they will carry a ton of weight, but Im at about the same level as you so it wouldnt hurt.

    go ahead and post them. Several of us just went through over 50 the other day so yours should be a breeze.

    Ok. Thanks for the offer. Quick tourney history up to this point... Villain knocked two donks out really early, which made him the chip leader all the way through. He didn't use his big stack much though, and the table became EXTREMELY tight after the first two players were knocked out. I was able to steal almost every time I tried, which was more than 1/2 the time I was in late position. So I might have had a loose table image, but I only showed down bad cards once, so maybe they just thought I was getting good cards. My read on villain is tight/passive, not much of a threat to steal. Should be a perfect HU opponent, which is why I'm disappointed I didn't win this one.

    I think I made two bad pushes at the end to lose it, but I'd like to hear opinions on that, as well as whether I was being aggressive enough throughout this HU session. Thanks a ton in advance...

    hand 2: Dont fold from the small blind unless your opponent has shown he will raise when you complete very often. Even if he does, fold like the bottom 30% and complete with the rest. You are getting 3:1 odds, there is 600 already in the pot and you need to put in 200. 93o is only a 60:40 dog against a random hand, you are definitely getting those odds and you have position for the rest of the hand which is incredibly important in HU play

    equity (%) win (%) tie (%)
    Hand 1: 40.0195 % 37.43% 02.59% { 9h3s }
    Hand 2: 59.9805 % 57.39% 02.59% { random }

    hand 4: This hand was played fairly weird. In your first few hands you seemed to play fairly passively, something I would try to tone up a little bit. Here, Id toss in like a 2-3xBB raise preflop and go from there. On the flop you put in a huge bet, 1.25x the pot. You have 4 cards to the flush, why do you want to discourage action that much. Id go with 1/2-2/3 the pot here. The villain didnt seem to want to play this hand at all, you dont need to risk so many chips to find that out

    hand 6: Preflop the raise is fine, postflop Im not so sure about. Your raise was 6x his bet...why? You have middle pair with a good kicker, a good hand HU. You dont really want to push your opponent off the hand here, and what if they did have a King? Youve just committed a huge amount of your chips here for no reason. Raise to maybe 1200 and go from there. If they call, slow way down. If they fold, good you won without risking a huge amount of chips

    hand 10: Im not incredibly fond of the raise, but it isnt bad I guess, I would have either called or tossed in a 2-2.5x raise. On the flop Im not all that sure what you are trying to do. The past couple of hands you have tried to push the villain off their hand with a HUGE raise, hand #8 got to showdown and you showed you had the better hand. Here you make a much smaller raise than you typically do, they should notice that and take it as a sign of weakness. A 400 bet on the turn is somewhat sketchy with like >$5000 in the pot, you dont really beat much but with those odds im not sure what I would do.

    -Sidenote: In my own play Im not sure how to respond to a situation like this where I dont have much of a hand, maybe an Ace or King high, or low pair, but Im getting 10+:1 odds, how do you play this? Typically I get into this situation by making a raise pre flop, missing the flop and c-betting, then getting called.

    hand 12: Dont fold preflop

    equity (%) win (%) tie (%)
    Hand 1: 43.2409 % 40.70% 02.54% { 8h6s }
    Hand 2: 56.7591 % 54.21% 02.54% { random }

    hand 14: Preflop raise is ok, but again I disagree with the flop. The pot is 2400, you have an open ended straight draw and an overcard and you bet over 80% of it. Id stick in a 1/3-1/2 pot sized bet here, there is a good chance to take it down with that and then if not you have plenty of outs.

    hand 20: See hands 12 and 2

    equity (%) win (%) tie (%)
    Hand 1: 48.2194 % 46.02% 02.19% { Qh3d }
    Hand 2: 51.7806 % 49.59% 02.19% { random }

    hand 25: This is a hand where I think either a fold or a cold call is better. What are you really hoping for by going all in? You have an ace with a weak kicker, thats asking for a coinflip against a pocket pair smaller than 5s, and any pockets higher have you at about 65:35. Also, any ace higher than A5 has you dominated. Yes yours are suited, but against A6o you are a dog. Essentially the only hands that will call are hands that have you beat.

    hand 26: With an M of less than 4 you have to push this. Standard play.

    All in all you seemed to play in a consistently flawed manner, but one that would be easy to correct. You always raise with your "good" hands and never vary your play. From the few hands that got to the flop you seemed to raise more aggressively when you actually had something than when you didnt. And a huge mistake is you folded as SB when villain hadnt shown he would raise against a complete. Dont overbet so much, dont be so overly aggressive with your good hands, and dont committ more chips than you have to. This play is very typical of a low-limit player and its very easy to exploit, but very easy for you to fix.

    Overall I think you played fairly well, just unfortunate to run into 99 when you finally made a stand

    6. Well played

    8. Good job extracting the most chips you could. A flat call might scare him off more than a raise, since you haven't called any of his bets, only raised them.

    10. Raising on the button is always good HE, but when you know villian is going to call with almost any 2, I might just limp in. Since he's adjusted his game from weak/tight to loose , he might raise...but thats ok. All you have to do is trap him by limping again, then reraise. This likely wont happen bc Villian has been playing mostly loose passive. Postflop seems ok, I like your aggressiveness. Calling the turn bet is a terrible play, so good fold. He did the same thing with AT with an A73 flop, so your gone.

    12. Complete the sb almost 100% of the time HE, 68 has potential. I'd rather be raising connectors like this from the button than hands like K3 where a lot of flops miss you completely.

    13. Nice hand

    15. Again, well played. Eventually villian will get tired of your check/raises and play back at you with a bad hand, so keep up the aggression, even with monster hands.

    16. Owned

    21. I'm tempted to call, you need to show some resistance sometime before he gets cocky and starts raising your BB every hand. Most of the time your cards are live, even against AK your 40%

    25. I dont really like doing this when you have such a big stack, but I'm wondering if raising to around 3600 and folding to a reraise is ok. I think most of the time your hand is good here, but I want a little more info before I toss in 2/3 of my chips when I've been dominating someone HE

    26. Good push

    Hand 10 - Fold on the flop. He has already told you he has a hand and you have no reason to not believe him.

    Hand 15 - Nice check raise

    Hand 25 - It looks like you got impatient.

    All in all I don't think you played that badly. Your opponent was pretty tight and had an apparent pattern of only betting when he had something so you probably should have waited to go all in when you had him trapped (like you did with hand 8.

    The other thing you can do with someone who is tight is take more opportunities to steal hands. If you win 2 out of 3 of these it is very profitable and makes it easier to trap him when you actually do have a hand.
    Poker is easy, it's winning at poker that's hard.

    Thanks, this is exactly the type of stuff I was looking for. Main points I'm taking into my next HU situation:

    1) Complete the SB more often.
    2) Make smaller, more consistent post-flop raises. Presumably this will encourage more calls, allowing me to make more money when I'm ahead in the hand and lose less when my opponent raises over the top.
    3) Don't push A5s when I'm bigger stack and opponent raised pre-flop

    What do I do if opponent keeps coming over the top when I complete the SB? Just tighten my range?

    ie. Dont always raise your strong hands and dont always check your weak ones

    Id say start folding the bottom 30% of hands, so yea, tighten your range. Again though, sometimes take a stand and then fire off a bet when they lead out with a check on the flop. And you can also use this to help trap them, if they constantly raise when you can complete you can vary your play by occassionally completely with strong hands and reraising them

    keep in mind this is the right thing based on the opponent you were playing. Since you folded all but 1 of his preflop raises, many tight and loose aggressive players are going to be raising your blinds with complete trash because they know you're not playing mediocre hands.

    Example of when reraise A5s is the correct play :

    Villan is loose agressive, raising your BB close to 100% of hands.

    Hero : 15,000
    Villian : 8,000

    Blinds : 300/600

    Villian raises to 2000
    Hero is All In

    Adjusting to your opponent is key, sometimes A5 looks like crap and you insta fold, other times it looks like gold and its an easy push.

    I dont think you instantly have to push over his raise, you arent that desperate here. I stand by what I said earlier, a push is only going to get called by hands that have you beat. If you beat them, then they will fold, but you could have gotten them to fold much easier with less risk. You have the chips to put in a 2-3x reraise, the villain has never pushed over a reraise on a bluff. When you raise he has folded or called, why not stick with that? You dont really want a call here, I would say that you would be a coinflip at best. What would be wrong with a flat call or a reraise and going from there? If they push over your raise, it should be an easy fold. If they lead out on a flop that you miss, fold. If they lead out on a flop with an Ace or stong flush draw, push over them. This is the most straightforward play and I feel like it is the best in this situation, you have the least risk playing it this way and you still have the same potential to win chips
