I place ITM about 1 out of every 5, and when I don't, it comes real close (22nd a few times, up to 30th). I think the biggest problem is anxiety against the bigger stacks, or going in with the mindset of "I want to place in the money."
When you're fighting to place ITM, you're struggling to make plays that should otherwise come naturally to you. You're sitting at 17/25 left, and going "I need to steal a pot to stay at 17, let me look around, see how everyone else is moving up and down...oh no I'm in 19th! I'm never going to get this $43!" Perhaps not you exactly, but it's happened enough to me, and I kick myself every time (I'm getting better though, I swear ).
Just play solid poker. Don't assume you have reads on everyone right when you sit down. Don't let people in your room influence your choices. Just play the best you can, and assume most of the people know what they're doing. A LOT of the players in the 180 $20+2 are donks. More than a half at least. People thinking they can steal a pot with Q5 with nothing anywhere close to hitting, and other miracles of life that make me wish I was in every pot that they are. Just don't fall into the trap of joining every pot with them, otherwise you're playing their game, not poker.
If you keep a level head, and your goal becomes "I want to win this," then I think your chances of placing at least in the money are fairly good. As far as BR...I do these with (don't yell at me) about $200 in my account while I sit at ring games to build the buffer back up. The $22 doesn't phase me much at that point, and it's not hard to make back fairly quickly, but the reward:time is pretty good once you make final table.
(to give you an idea, I've played maybe 10 or 11 of these, finished 1st, 4th, and somewhere in the 10-18 range, and I don't consider myself a 'great' poker player by any measure yet).
