How do you treat players that insult you during play
I tend to ignore them and just make a note ("idiot"), but I find it a bit disturbing that there are that many rude peolpe playing poker. What happened to good sportsmanship?

For instance, yesterday I was ITM in a 10+1$ SnG.
I had about 7800 of total 15 000 chips and the two others had about
5 200 and 1800. The 5 200 stack played tight passive and very predictable. He folded his blinds to me to any aggression and showed off all his good cards. The small stack was quite good but made some weak calls. Then in the BB with blinds at 300/600 the small stack pushes his 1800 and I call for 1200 to the 2700 pot with Q6 loosing to his A3. Maybe not a brilliant call by me but the UTG guy finds it bad enough to call me a "moron". What is wrong with people?

    (About the SnG:
I busted out in 3'rd after loosing twice to the small stack with ATs loosing to his K8s and then I was pushing 63o on a 983 rainbow flop and he called with AJs and hit an A on the river and I was out. Fair enough. The rude guy kept folding but won the SnG when he hit three strong A hands in a row and probably still thinks he's a poker genius. )

Everytime someone wants to play table captain, it is a chance for you to gain information on his/her playing style. Use these opportunities.

Ignore them completely and move on (assuming it was a situation like this where you're out). In a situation where you ended up with their chips, I like Fnord's line: "Shhhhh...I'm counting your chips."

    well said.

I am reminded of Patrick Swayze as Dalton the Bouncer in Road House. It goes something like this.

"If there is any trouble brewing, Be Nice. Try to escort them to the door, while being Nice. If they call your mother a whore, Be Nice. Till you get outside, then Be serious."

IMO internet trolls are more aggravated by niceness than by insulting them back. That is their bread and butter.

And you can be nice while getting digs in on the idiots, great. Let's face it tho, taking their stake is the best revenge.

Ignore them. If stuff like that bothers you then you're giong to have problems becoming a successful poker player.

If I am criticized I like to say things like "Sorry, I am new at poker... I thought queens were good cards?"

I like to say something like "What'd you have? I couldnt' see over all these chips" or "Thanks Coach. Put me in!"

I don't take it too seriously. I try to remind myself that I want their chips, not their respect. The last thing I want to do is go on tilt over some silly comments.

Players at the lower buy-ins just can't believe the shit that keeps happening to them, geez.

Players at the lower buy-ins just can't believe the shit that keeps happening to them, geez.

My favorite is when they lose an allin where they were ahead like 60/40 type "OMG" like it totally blew their mind that they lose when they were sooooo far ahead.
  20. #20
If its a table captain who's berating you just think of the silliest poker logic you can and start spewing it at him. Tell him you had pot odds, or some other fish had them (when he calls all in pre-flop with A8 or something), tell him you "had a feeling about this hand." say "I thought you were bluffing" if you suckout on him.
Seriously, when I began playing I would be so frustrated with not knowing how to beat the fishes I just used to tell them how incredibly stupid they are in the chat box all game long. And y'know who the most frustrating people were? The ones who used to argue back, but were dumb as shit.

Just trust me, the guy talking trash to you is a hell ofa lot more frustrated than you are from taking his insults. Just fire him up some more. ITs funny. Make sure to type in "LOL, nh" when ever he loses.
  21. #21
Let's face it... we all suck out sometimes. I'll NEVER EVER rub in a bad beat, but if someone wants to show me poor etiquette and lose their cool, I've got no problem adding to the tilt.

If I just make a mistake, let it go. If they win a hand but cant understand my logic (pot odds, implied odd, etc.) I normally dont care. If they are a flat out jerk, I normally give them the old "I dont tell you how to suck your boyfriends dick, so dont try to tell me how to play cards". Does it accomplish much? Nah, not really. But if you have to play with an a$$hole you might as well get a few jabs in.

Also, concerning turning off chat - do what you want, but i've found that the loudmouth jerkasses tend to talk enough to get something from them. If you turn them off, you might miss something they say to someone else, etc.

Today I had to leave and it was 2 other guys left and I wanted it to end fast so I started picking on this one guy, talking shit about every move he made. And I got him to push me all-in when I wanted him to and doubled up. And then I lost two coinflips to him and lost.

But If I had won it woulda been pretty cool to affect the guy that way.

So you find it ok to insult people at the table then?
I just read some place (swedish poker magazine I believe) that online players are becomming a problem in many live games, since they think it's ok to insult other players and to cheer when people are knocked out of a tournament or to rub it in when they draw out on someone etc.

Last night I shut 2 guys up when they got on me about calling down with 4 2 o in the big blind after I flopped an OESD and hit on the river.

At first they started ragging a little, them it was like, faggot this and ahole that.

Finally I said ...."Oh wait.... stop the shuffle .... we have a couple of experts here... Ok everybody we have to play standing up now, no sitting in the presence of greatness."
Never heard another word from them.

Last week I had a guy so confused about pot odds and implied odds he left the table. Double talking them is great.

Think he wanted the low stack out of the tournament so that he had you for himself, and when he saw your hand he got mad....
Low stacks almost always goes all in with any ace because Aces are so powerfull, if he had his Ace you would need two pairs or a huge hand like flush, straight ect...

I despise people that know everything due to their wicked hindsight. Usually I say "O goodie. an expert"

But it get's even better when they drop out and I say "O goodie, an expert giving advice from green text now."

If I ever see this one fucker again I will slit his throat.

Like 2nd hand of the tourney he takes half my chips when I was 85% favorite. KK vs QT he goes all-in preflop with 800 I called. So I was super shortstacked. He hit Q on flop T on river and said it was a good push whole table agreed.

Last I am huge chip leader with 3 left 10k in chips other guys both around 1.5k. I have two pair on flop he goes all-in and hits trips on river and laughs.

A few hands later makes a flush on the river after ogign all-in.

I end up being like 4k in chips him 5k and the other guy around 4k. I get AT suited after he doubled blind I go all-in and he flips KJ not suited. and he hits a str8 on the river.

I want him dead. I was like smooth sailing for 1st. and came in 3rd. He beat the odds on me everytime. I hate him.

    Can you say ... TILT?

Seriously, its going to happen once in a while. Players that make -EV decisions like this over and over are the ones who give you most of your chips early in the tourney. Try to remember the ones you win, and shrug off the beats.

I watched the shooting stars WPT last night. I don't know how old it is, but Danny Nguyen won it all. He was a tremendous underdog in almost every hand they showed the entire last hour that i watched. The worst was when he pushed all in with A7, and the other guy calls with AK. King on the flop, so this is all but sealed. Instead, runner runner 7. So ther's your "once in a while."

Regarding trash talking, I don't do too much of it when I play poker. It's too much of a distraction. I'll do it in just about everything else I do, tho. One of the ones I always enjoyed, was this guy I played with all the time in the casino. He'd always ask, "does your husband play like that, too?" Always pisses guys off.

I always get someone calling me the N word on stars I think it's hilarious but the table gets all up tight and in an uproar, like you should report him!! Meh whatever I don't give a rats ass I just want their chips.

I also get other remarks, like "shouldn't you be out robbin someone", "or shouldn't you be stealing rims and hubcaps"

I simply reply, well I am stealing your chips right now does that count for the same thing?

It's funny how white people can be so offended by racism. It's even funnier that everyone at the table goes on tilt except you. nh

Lately I'll play along like I am stupid or don't know what I'm doing.

I like to ask questions too, like " are the rules the same for 6 handed?"
    " Is it 4 or 5 cards for a str8 in 6 handed"

My favorite is ........."if two pair beats 3 of a kind... what does 3 pair beat?"
    Guys love that one.

Or say something like " I always play rags at the top of the hour"( like a crazy Ivan).

I also like Fnords "counting your chips line" but will also add.

" Why are these chip wet?... " are you crying?"

I lot of times though If I suck out on a guy I will first agree and say something like "WOW... did I just get lucky"
Why is it a penny for your thoughts but

Depends on my mood I either ignore them or try to heat them up. Usually in SnGs I will try to heat them up tho.

I admit I have gone off on a few people in chash games who runner runner me for my stack at the end of a long day

" Why are these chips wet?... " are you crying?"
    Hilarious.

I don't usually directly provoke people, but I do enjoy it when two other players are going at it, usually when they both played a hand donkishly. In those situations I like to add fuel to the fire, saying "burn" and "face!"

Also, if someone whines for more than two hands after a bad beat, or whatever, I'll ask them if they need a wahmbulance.
  49. #49
If someone's whining a lot, ask "Anyone like some cheese?" (to go with the whine) The requests usually start flowing in from the other players for cheddar, gouda, etc.

    Oldie but a goodie.

First of all this is one of the most entertaining posts in a while...Fnord, I like your response, I am goin to start using it.

One time I took all the chips from this one arrogant guy who kept insulting everyone at the table and acting like he was the "God" of Poker...after I took all his chips I wrote:

"Oh wow, I stepped away for a couple of minutes and came back to see my 2 yrs old daughter take all your chips!" - he went completely AWOL, reloaded, and lost all his chips again two hands later...what a psycho.

In my mind all those people who talk such trash at the table are a bunch of pussies...and in my mind are weak players...because I am sure that in a live game they will keep their coward mouth shut...if not I will take them outside and punch their teeth in..the best solution...TAKE ALL THEIR CHIPS! and say "bye bye"...

i especially enjoy goading players when i make a mistake in a pot, but still win the hand.

    "I KNEW it was coming..."
    "diamonds are lucky for me..."

    and my all time favorite:

"you shoulda bet more on the flop/turn...!" (especially if i was in fact given poor odds)

this not only has the effect of potentially tilting your opponent, but it also draws everyones attention to your mediocre play (if thats the image you want to create).

I have been known start flirting with people who get abusive, because you can be pretty sure that anyone who insults other people at a poker table doesn't have the most enlightened attitude to homosexuality Result = they explode, you take their chips.

I still feel the best move is the "I'm an idiot" poker advice...

I was actually playing against somebody at a home game, I got AQ AI against K8... I said something about the guy having 6 outs.. and he said "you only have six outs too..." Plus there was even a thread on here recently where somebody thought AJ vs. QQ was a coinflip or something... the greatest lies are truths... I use these kinda things all the time. The key is subtlty... my favorites are...

"eh.. it was a coinflip" - when you draw out, on an AI preflop...
    or
"eh... I had outs" - when you draw out post flop..
So you click their picture and then you get their money?
