$5 Party Tourney, Help?

This is a recent tourney I played. I'm posting it primarily for some advice on after I made it to the big stack... I find I'm perhaps playing too weak/tight and would like some advice on how to use my chips better. My chips just seem to whittle away... I dunno if it's that I am loosening up in the wrong way, or cards just seem to go dead for me. I suspect I am loosening up my "calling" range too much, and my raising range not enough, but I'd love some quick advice on my play (I know not a lot can be seen from one HH, but anything is helpful.)

General advice on how I played each hand in the tourney is also very much appreciated. I know I have a lot to learn and could very much use the advice. I've probably played 400-500 tourneys at this level, with a ITM of about 45% but a RoI of only 16%. A lot of 4th place finishes also, which say to me I haven't quite mastered this level. I seem to get spanked when I move up to $10 levels... at least, I know it still bothers me seeing $50-80 swings in my bankroll in just a few hours. $25-30 downswings don't seem to bother me so much.

I find I rarely finish second, as in this tourney I did. Of my finishes, roughly 70% are 3's, 25% 1sts and 5% 2nds, and I find I am getting ITM as the shortstack usually. I do it regularly without having played anything but absolutely premium hands, and a few times never voluntarily putting money in the pot.

Any chance you could run this through JeffreyGB's Tournament Trimmer as this would make it easier to read and edit out the hands you didn't play. It's really easy to use.

I tried Jeffrey's converter, and it really didn't work for me. It cut off the value of the first hole card for hands I folded, did not record if I was raised into before folding, did not calculate M, and cut off all hand summaries of hands I did play. I have edited my hand manually with all of the info Jeffrey's uses, I think. I did not bother to calculate M for each hand though.

To finish off, I had 1/3 of the chips, and I am normally very good at heads up play even as a 2:1 dog, but this time the cards didn’t go my way and I ended up in 2nd. I’m not especially concerned about my play after I get to the final 2, I am more looking for advice on the mid-endgame.

OK, I'll have a go at this. First of all, you shouldn't be playing $5 tourneys at PP, with the 20% vig it's very hard to get ahead. Move to either PS or UB where the entry fee is only 50c rather than $1 for the $5 tourneys. Think of it this way, it would have been another $200-250 in your BR over 400-500 tourneys and that's even before bonus accrual (worth another 60c per $5.50 tourney at PS).

Overall:
- I think you need to tighten up the hands you play early on. Also, don't call re-raises with hands that are fine for stealing (eg. QJo in hand 4) but won't stand up to a re-raise.
- Also, you need to read HOH2, particularly what it says about when to push/fold when the blinds get big relative to your stack size. Basically if your stack is <10x BB, it is either push or fold preflop, no calling!

1. Fold preflop. Whilst UTG+1 only minraised, J9o isn't nearly strong enough to call this, particularly since you're out of position for the rest of the hand.

2. I don't mind completing the SB with KTo here. However, I would have led out somewhere in this hand, probabaly on the turn, since nobody had shown any strength.

3. OMG fold this preflop. I know you're in position but 98o just isn't worth it. As played, I know you're getting great pot odds to call the raise but I would still fold this if I had limped.

4. I would also have tried to steal with QJo from the CO when folded to me but DEFINITELY fold to the push. There are just so many hands that dominate you, and you have a semi-decent stack.

5. Push! You are shortstacked, you want to take down the blinds + limper right now. You are putting the rest of your chips in anyway, get 'em all in up front.

6. Don't play this so passively! I know you have TPNK but with the flush draw out there you have to bet this. I would have bet 300 on the flop and slowed down if anybody called me.

7. I would have just put DeamonFish AI preflop. You're not folding AJo here whatever happens, let your opps make the tough decisions!

8. I would have just put natetacular AI preflop. With AA/KK I would have played it the way you did but QQ is vulnerable to As and Ks on the flop, leaving you to have to make the "crying call" when the K comes on the flop.

9. Fold preflop. You have a nice stack, no need to take these sorts of risks. Alternatively I would have raised to 500 to try to steal the blinds. No limping at these blind levels!

11. Meh I don't hate completing the SB with your stack size, you're getting 7:1 on your money assuming the BB doesn't raise.

12. OMG Raiser480 isn't true to his name, this was a very very weak play on his part. A9 when folded to me in the SB is a raise all day long.

13. Raise preflop! with the blinds and stack sizes, put jtylerlewis AI preflop.

15. I would probably fold this preflop because blinds are a too big to be playing 44 for set value. That said, given Raiser called I don't think the call is terrible.

16. I would have pushed with 77 in this hand, unless you had a read that daanuggets limped big hands like AA-QQ UTG. You are the big stack, use it to beat your opponents with!

20. Why are you calling the river bet here? You have nothing but a Q kicker.

21. I would probably have just put droptop AI preflop, no way he would call you with Q4s (well, I wouldn't!). As played, since you raised preflop, you need to throw out a c-bet on the flop, I would have just put droptop all in on the flop. He might have folded his flush draw, particularly with the K out there (although at the $5 level, probably not )

22. I don't mind the stop 'n' go here but I would probably have just pushed preflop with 77.

23. I would have just pushed preflop unless your read on Raiser was that he would call you down with any two cards. You need those blinds in your stack!

I think your flop bet is a bit too large, $550-650 will accomplish the same thing with less risk. Your getting even money betting the ~pot when you could betting 4:3, sure its only a couple hundred chips but i'm nit-picking
