Default Rebuy discussion, your input needed here.

Last night I took 6th in stars 3.30 10k guaranteed rebuy out of 1482 people. Hartlis and I kinda got into it because when I told him I never did a rebuy during the 1st hour, and I only did the add on at the break.

I intially told him I was just doing an experiment (for fun) to see how far I could make it without rebuying and just doing the add on, he then went on about how in rebuy articles across the internet tells you to always rebuy immediately.

While this may be true, I saw no harm in my little fun experiement and my argument was based off that, is this totally inconcievable? That one can make it this deep and not have to rebuy, I mean is that really that stupid?

Most people say that there are 2 different strategies for the first hour. Either play very tight and absorb chips from the rebuying maniacs or rebuy early and play a lot of pots in hope to get lucky. IF you dont get lucky, just keep rebuying. A tight approach in the first hour (like I assume you used) is ok too.

IMO a rebuy right away and then play tight until break is the way to go.

I agree with you and I was using the tight approach, but he got up in arms like it is mandatory, when to me its not

Theoretically, all players being equal, you shouldn't rebuy ever, and probably shouldn't add-on either (the fewer your chips at the break, the more valuable the add-on is). The second half of your chips is less valuable than the first, so you should have an edge over the field for rebuying to have +EV.

If you bust, it is better to start a new tournament than it is to rebuy. The later you rebuy, the smaller the percentage of total chips in the tournament your money buys you. It's up to you to decide if your skills justify this.

in the 3.30 rebuy, its not too hard to have an edge over the field!

It might sound odd, but I never rebuy. Knowing how loose players are in the first our of a rebuy make it worth it to play extremely tight doubling up on prime hands in the first hour.

I would think the best idea would be to make it a goal always to pay as little as possible to make as much as possible. I think it's odd how people will critisize you for not rebuying. If you're above whatever the average chip stack will be at the end of the add on period without having to rebuy or add on then you did something that most couldn't. Pat yourself on the back.

I played one yesterday and i came ~400th, my best finish yet. During the rebuy hour i stalled every decision, i had 3300 after ther rebuy period and reduced the number of hands to 43 in the hour . I added on, so i spent 6.30 in total. unfortunatley i lost on a bluff, looking back it was dumb but oh well thats poker :P

Playing tight is fine but you should always rebuy right away. When you double up, do you want to double to 6000 or 3000?

i dont rebuy very first hand unless the whole table does but i shove any two first up.
then i rebuy, 1st hand is a image thing so to speak.

I like re-buyins...How I play re-buyin tourneys is test my luck in big pots to try to get a lead to take control of the table.

This strategy usually works for me in MTT's.

    Get your hand history.

I think you will end up regretting your decision once you get it.

As wild pointed out, you effectively wasted one of your double ups by not rebuying immediately. The whole point of MTTs is to accumulate chips. Rebuying immediately just makes it that much easier to do so. When I first started playing rebuys, I just bought in once. I didn't add-on or rebuy ever, and I just treated it as a cheaper way to get into a huge prize pool. I got pretty deep a couple of times doing this, and looking back I now realize that by not rebuying or adding on I squandered my chances of winning these things because I wasted one of my double ups.

i definitly rebuy right away, because as wildbob said, its better to double up to 6000 rather than 3000. the first 45 min. of the rebuy hour, i play a fairly tight game. notice i said fairly tight, and not super tight, because if one of the rebuying maniacs pushes in late position against me i will put all the chips in if i have a decent hand. if i havent accumulated a decent stack after 45 min, i will push a few marginal hands because if i dont hit, i can rebuy twice and be back around where i was before the hand.

i cant see the merit in being a maniac because you spend so much money rebuying that you have to make it way too deep just to break even
eeevees are not monies yet...they are like baby monies.
