    Default Anger Management

I require advice on how to quell my violent outbursts when playing SNG's.

Since i started playing around 14 months back i have managed to smash up my computer chair with my fist twice, thus spraining my hand, smashed up my mouse beyond repair, caused dents in walls by hurling missiles at them and kicked a portable TV off it's stand

Now, my current ROI is around 25% - 30%, so i'ts not like i'm a losing player and i can put a 12 hour sessions in without any problem x2 tabling - so i'm fully aware of the horrific down-swings that can occur, and i know that my next win is just around the corner....but this doesn't stop me from "going off on one" when i've gone out of my last 10 tourney's only for my AK s to get called by A3 os - miss on the flop, although i have 4 hearts...but out i go as he hits his 3 on the river - RIGHT on the bubble. Hardly a bad beat i know, but it just gets to me.

That happened yesterday so i threw a full bottle of water off the wall.

Help me be a calmer player before i do some serious damage to some expensive pc equipment . It's lucky i live alone really.

    Try qualudes (sp?).

Seriously, the fact that you recognize your outbursts are a good first step.

Although I am certainly no psychologist (and didn't even sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night) you may want to try having something close by that is there for the sole purpose of destroying when you lose your temper. Something like a pillow, stuffed animal, etc. If the item is there specifically for that purpose you will now know exactly what to do when the rage hits.
Poker is easy, it's winning at poker that's hard.

Anger burns up your winnings. Consider:

Force yourself to burn a certain amount of money each time you blow up. If you're making money, this is a nice visual way of showing yourself that you could be making more.

i blew up today as i came off a bad run at SnGs this past week losing six buy-ins. took a break, played a cash game at a friend's yesterday, doubled my buy-in + abe lincoln. back to the sngs today.

first, i pushed over a hyper-aggressive player's bet on a raised low-card, good textured flop. he called showing A3o and i got sucked out on. donk move on his part. fine, it'll hold next time i hope. there goes the buy-in.

AA then sucked out to 66. kinda annoyed at this point since this was just after the TT beat. lost another game.

AA sucked out once more three minutes later. down to about 600 chips. bellows out curses.

push with KK then sucked out in the same SnG. that did it. i grab my sneakers and throw them at the trash can three feet in front of me. i miss. grab the other one, yelling, and wing it at the same target. somehow the shoe ends up behind me.

so i grab some drum sticks and starting hitting them together. after this session, i now have teeth marks all over them.

I'm the absolute opposite, I somehow remain super calm when this happens- completely devoid of expression of any kind, like a damn robot. The only time i will get somewhat excited is if I win a big pot , make a big call/move deep into an MTT, the bad beats I just shrug off somehow as inevitable.

I like to take a walk after a bad beat...

    Maybe eat some villagers.

    Just wondering...

Do things other than poker make you blow up? (aka: someone cutting you off in traffic or whatever)

The only advice I have to actually help is to try and think about what your actually getting mad about... What do you want them to do? Stop making really bad plays?

Basically your getting upset because they make a stupid move and get lucky... When they are should get lucky fairly often.

Place a deck of cards (or even better, buy a case or them ) next to your desk to yell at and throw when you get mad, at least you will be blameing the right thing then, and cant break something worth more than $2 (and picking them up again and again might help stop the problem)

    Q. Is poker Gambling?
    A. Do you use correct bankroll management?

none taken whatsoever. i will clarify that i only play about 1-2 sessions of four-tabling per day, about 5 days a week.

i dread the day a real downswing comes along to take me out. maybe then i will learn some humility and come back to read FTR like a maniac again. i'm pulling in 17% ROI over 250 games at the $11s and 24% at the $22s over 50, which means absolutely nothing, i know. but it seems hard to not play poker and sit down and read instead. oh well, at least now i understand gabe's "KK with an A!" thread, which i didn't at the beginning of the summer.

perhaps writing this down is one step towards self-improvement.
