Default Need Spreadsheet Help (or tables)

I've tried a little in Excel and a lot in word on setting up a grid/matrix. I'm having a ton of trouble formatting the cells. They never will line up how I want and keep trying to autoformat themselves.

I'll give an example of what I want to do and I'm hoping someone can help me. I need to get this done for my internship.

Let's say we're trying to define FTR players through characteristics of other FTR players. Basically there would be a leftmost column with PLAYER at the header and a bunch of random ftr players listed under this header in lower rows. Then going across the top row would be a number of FTR "celebrities" we would use to define these players. Let's say going across we have Lukie, Xianti, ME, and Gabe. Now each player has a list of sub attributes that I want in a second row under the celebrity's name and the celeb's name in the first row spans these columns. (Damn, I know how to do this in html but I would really like to do it in word or powerpoint). Then each row under that is set up for each of the players on the left column to make an X or a check if they have that attribute.

Example, Bigred would have sexy, funny, large cock, and charming as attributes that would fit in the 2nd row under his name. Lukie would only have storyteller and tan-in-a-can. Both attribute categories need to span the row under each player's name but will have different amount of attributes. I can't get this shit to even remotely lineup. I may end up doing this shit in HTML with that colspan tag soon.

Any help? Plz ask for clarification if needed, I know I just wrote a shitload of vague stuff.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but if you just want to know how to simulate a colspan...

In Excel... select the cells you want to turn into one, right click, select "Format Cells..." Click on "Alignment" tab, check the box "Merge Cells".

In Word... select the cells you want, right click select "Merge Cells".

If you already knew this and your problem is more complex, then please disregard.

Hmmm, I'll give that a try. I figure I can make a huge grid and then just simply merge the ones I want to span the sub categories. TY.
