Whenever you make a bet or a raise for value or to defend your hand against draws make sure you are laying them 3:1 or less to call.

e.g. You flop top pair and are first to act. The pot is 10 dollars. A good value bet would be something like 7 dollars. That way they are getting 17:7 or 2.5:1 on their call.

e.g. You flop big and villain bets 7 into a 10 pot, but there is a flush draw and you want to defend against it. A good raise would be to 27. That way they are getting 44:20 or 2.2:1 on their call.
