He does it again! I push again and lose. What are your views on my play here?

The Tournament Trimmer (v0.7.6) was developed by JeffreyGB at http://www.FlopTurnRiver.com.

Thanks to anyone who takes a look I'm still fairly baffled a lot of the time
  2. #2
    Hand 35.
He does it again! I push again and lose. What are your views on my play here?
You have a M of 5. What else could you do? You will have to pick a spot eventually and push. So you got beat by 66 and the missed the flop. This things happens to all of us.
Overall you played well. You got in the money and got a bit unlucky.
  3. #3
    1. QJs in MP1 - fold preflop. These hands look so pretty but can really get you into trouble. As played, with the flush draw out there I would raise him up on the flop to say 200. That turn bet was risky with the better and caller on the flop, I prefer to try to take it down on the flop.

    2. T3o in the SB - not enough limpers for me to complete here, I fold. Postflop is fine I think.

    3. KK - your re-raise was a little big I think, I make it 300 to go this early (so you can get away from it a little cheaper if an A comes on the flop). Nice play on the flop.

    4. KJs in the CO - I fold this one preflop too. As played, the flop is fine but I take the free card on the turn and only get froggy if I hit the flush or a K or J. As played you are just getting odds to call the C-R - assuming a K or J on the river is good (ie. he doesn't have a set), then you have 14 outs on the river (so 28% to win or 2.6 to 1) and you need to call 360 chips to see a pot of 980 (so 2.7 to 1). Add the implied odds in and I think the call is fine. Folding preflop would have saved you a lot of chips though.

    5. A3s - fold this preflop. You are limping too many marginal hands OOP. I see you said the table was passive but the reverse implied odds of playing A-rag OOP are bad.

    6. K7s in the BB - check/fold flop, as played fold river. Why are you taking a stab at this with no pair and no draw on the flop? On the river, what exactly do you think opp has that K high will beat?

    7. KQs - I can see an argument for just limping preflop here but I don't hate the raise. You need to play carefully if you get called preflop, hit a K or Q on the flop and opp won't go away though.

[Qc Ks] CO (M=32.80; r+f+f+f+F) - good fold. Calling a raise with KQo even in position can lead you to a world of hurt.

    9. TT - I would raise standard 3x BB here. Those 50 chips can come in valuable later on (not to mention the fact that pot sizes grow exponentially in NL so keeping it smaller earlier can save you a lot of chips by the river).

    10. 99 - I limp this preflop this early from UTG and play for set value. As played I think fold is good to the re-raise. Making it 150 not 200 to go would have saved you 50 chips (not that I'm suggesting you should have raised).

    12. 94o in the BB - whilst I think taking stabs on the flop is OK, I would actually prefer to do it on the turn if opp checks again.

    13. T3o on the button - Nice steal. I would actually make it 250-275 to go rather than 300, saves you a few chips if you need to fold. Just make sure you raise 250-275 in this spot even if you pick up AA.

    14. 33 UTG+1 - fold preflop. Small pairs lose value as the blinds increase. The alternative with your stack size and the stack sizes remaining you would be to limp to try to hit a set but I don't like doing this from OOP (too much chance of somebody raising behind).

[4c 7d] SB (M=13.53; f+f+f+f+F) - If the BB has been playing tight I might raise it up to try to steal.

    15. AQo UTG - I think 350 is a bit too small here as a PF raise, I make it 375-400. Nitpick though.

[7c 7s] BU (M=7.80; r+f+F) - I think the fold is fine. The alternative would NOT be to call but to push over, and that depends on how the raiser has been playing.

    16. 44 in the CO - open fold this and as played definitely fold to the re-raise. If you had 4000+ chips I would like your play but when you have ~10x BB these small pocket pairs really lose value OOP. In the end I think you were very lucky it was a flip rather than a higher PP. Push preflop would have been slightly -EV with 10x BB and 3 active players to go through.

    17. 97o in the BB - I would have taken a stab on the turn, probably same result though.

    18. K8s on the button - I make it 500 to go, gives you a bit more FE. As played your 350 flop bet is too weak as a c-bet, I make it 500-600 to go on the flop. Once opp calls you have to shut down as you did.

    19. A8o in the SB - good play. I like to put the shortstack AI in these sorts of situations.

    20. AQo folded to in the SB - good play again. I would not make a standard raise because after the last time maybe he will think you are FOS and call all-in with a hand that you're ahead of.

    21. K4o UTG - I would fold this as the 2nd shortest stack. You want to focus on pounding the shortstack not to have to go through 2 other bigger stacks.

    22. K7o in the SB - good again. All these hands you've been raising the shortstack with are well ahead of the average hand.

    24. 55 in the SB - good again. Just be aware that at some stage he might start playing back at you, so if you pick up say 32o in this situation it may be good to just let him have it.

    25. A4o in the BB - I might raise him up here to 600 and try to take it down preflop. As played, OMG this guy is so weak.

    26. A8o in the SB - raise him up again preflop, why just complete? As played the flop C-R is fine on that dry board, as is shutting down once the C-R is called. I might consider a blocking bet of say 500 on the river to stop him getting a cheap showdown.

    27. 92s in the BB - I would take a stab on the turn after opp checks twice (although donks love to slowplay flopped trips here). Note that because you didn't raise preflop, betting the flop would not be a c-bet. As played, I would bet say 250-300 on the river after opp has checked three times.

    28. K8o on the button - you played this fine. Whilst you have an OESD it's not worth your whole stack to find out.

[Qc 3d] SB (M=8.63; f+F) - Raise it up here. Q3o is ahead of the average hand and you need to keep the pressure on.

    29. Q2o BB special - bet the flop with the flush draw out there. Also, $5.50 players expect everybody to slowplay their trips so if you don't they may not give you credit. As played I might just flat call the turn I think rather than raising. Once he calls the raise I think checking behind is a good play.

    31. QTs - I would definitely c-bet the flop here, 600 to go on the flop. As played I suspect he is just attacking your weak turn bet but again, you can't possibly call this.

    33. 72o in the BB - I play it exactly the same.

    34. A3s in the BB - This is read dependent. How has COWTOWN been playing? If he/she has been completing the SB and hasn't raised all that often I would fold this. If he/she has been active I think the push over is fine, but at best you'll be a 60/40 favourite and there's a good chance you're a 30/70 dog.

[2s Jd] SB (M=5.37; f+F) - Shove preflop, this is unexploitable I think.

    35. ATs - again, this is read dependent but I think the push over is fine. ATs is right on the border for me though, ATo and A9 and below I think I just fold. Just realise that COWTOWN is getting almost 4:1 on the call so he's unlikely to fold here and that it is likely to be a flip.

I'll add some overall comments later
  4. #4
    Overall comments:

    - Your aggression is good. I like the way you pounded on the shortstack on the bubble, this is very good play. One minor point is that I think you may need to be a bit more targeted in your aggression - I would be more aggressive in position (from the button and SB when folded to) rather than from UTG or UTG+1.
    - You are still limping too many marginal hands from OOP early in the game. Hands like QJs are fine to limp from the CO or button when you have limpers in front but I don't like to open limp these from MP. There is also the problem of reverse implied odds (if you play QJs and the flop comes J high, you can get stacked by a better J).
    - Small pocket pairs lose value as blinds go up and you can't just limp and play for set value. Open fold hands like 44 and 33 from early position when blinds increase.

Overall though I think your play is pretty good though, you are well ahead of the average $5.50 player so should have a good ROI over the longer term.
  5. #5
    Thanks Taipan and Erudito

    A few things

    3. KK - your re-raise was a little big I think, I make it 300 to go this early (so you can get away from it a little cheaper if an A comes on the flop). Nice play on the flop.
It amazes me how people seem completely unable to fold to re-raises. So I made a big one looking to win a lot of chips. An ace could come I suppose but most of the time I will be ahead on the flop I think? But then perhaps this is the thing where early on chips won are less valuable than chips lost.

    5. A3s - fold this preflop. You are limping too many marginal hands OOP. I see you said the table was passive but the reverse implied odds of playing A-rag OOP are bad.
Even if I just play it to hit a flush? Hitting the Ace would have not excited me.

    6. K7s in the BB - check/fold flop, as played fold river. Why are you taking a stab at this with no pair and no draw on the flop? On the river, what exactly do you think opp has that K high will beat?
No pair and no draw hence my only chance to win is to bluff. I find bluffs on paired flops can be quite sucessful. This time though it didn't work. The call on the river.. errr... hmmm well it was cheap

    18. K8s on the button - I make it 500 to go, gives you a bit more FE. As played your 350 flop bet is too weak as a c-bet, I make it 500-600 to go on the flop. Once opp calls you have to shut down as you did.
Yes I found myself scared to make a proper C-bet, scared of losing the chips but instead of checking I made a half assed bet. Annoying to get bluffed on the end. I want to try to recognise patterns that could be bluffs like this.

Pounding on the shortstack was fun I'll try to remember your advice on positional aggression. I know I limp a bit too much, It's a discipline thing. Maybe I should play 2 at once. Good point about the low pairs in EP. Sad though it will make me I will throw them away.

    Cheers

It amazes me how people seem completely unable to fold to re-raises. So I made a big one looking to win a lot of chips. An ace could come I suppose but most of the time I will be ahead on the flop I think? But then perhaps this is the thing where early on chips won are less valuable than chips lost.
That's the thing - given the guy raised UTG and called your raised, a bunch of Ax hands have to be within his range. Whilst KK is obviously a great hand, there could be situations where if an A comes on the flop you have to let it go. Re-raising to 300 has the same effect as 500 but just makes it a little cheaper the ~16% of times an A comes on the flop.

Even if I just play it to hit a flush? Hitting the Ace would have not excited me.
Think of it this way. You are approximately 0.8% to hit a flush on the flop and 10.9% to hit a four-flush. To take the extreme case where you need to flop a flush to know you're good, you would need to win 3,750 chips every time you flopped a flush to make calling 30 chips here worthwhile (30/0.8%). Sure, you might flop a four-flush and win by hitting your flush on the turn or river or by semi-bluffing with the draw, but even then you would have to win 275 chips every time you flopped a four-flush (and that's not taking into account the extra chips you might lose by chasing).
