    Default Question about tournament play

I'd appreciate any help with my topic. I consistently place in multi-table NL tournaments around 100 out of about 500. I believe in the last 15 or so tournaments I've finished between 68-128 every time, but I can't seem to get the breakout that I'm looking for. I was wondering if anyone else had ever had the problem of getting past the initial phases and sputtering out as the blinds increase. I consistenly stay around average chip stack most of the time and try not to lose too many big stacks. Am I playing too many hands or matching up against too many big stacks? I tend not to differ between little and big stacks as far as my bets go and I consistently play the same hands and bluff on occasion. Any suggestions would help and feel free to ask any more questions.

Welcome to FTR, Mystical. You've come to the right place, hehe.

I've been in your shoes before, I know exactly what you're talking about. Your question is pretty broad, and the answers are going to depend on specifics and more detail.

    General suggestions:
Read the stickies in this forum, especially the one about tools for patience, and michael1123's tourney strat. There's some golden info there, and should help you out a bit.

HOH2 - Harrington on Hold'Em - Volume II, The Endgame. This book has exactly the sort of info you need. I just reread ch.9 for a discussion that the book club is going to have (take a look at that forum too).

Read a few posts from others, fire away with some more specific questions - there's a lot of MTT players here with some serious mojo =)

What's the buyin for the tourneys you're in? Can you come down a level? Might help to play smaller fields as well, like the 180s on Stars.

It's $1 buy-ins. I don't have too much of a bankroll to play a lot of the higher buy-in tournaments and I'm mostly looking for experience in tournament play rather than the money (obviously). Thanks for all the advice. I've read the stickies but not the HOH so I'll look into that.

You could post a tournament history for us to look at, if you feel comfortable with some constructive criticism. If you do, use the tournament trimmer in the Tools place.

Well, I have good news. I placed 2nd out of 456 in tonight's $1 NL tournament, $75 prize, and I owe it all to this website. All the articles are very informative and have helped out my strategy immensely.

try playing some S'n'G's to build your bankroll, if you can place in the money by playing in tournaments with nearly 500 entrants you should have no problem dominating small buy-in S'n'G's.

To support and slowly build my bankroll I've been playing some small limit 6-max tables. I've played some small SnGs but in my opinion I'm a little more consistent at the limit tables so I don't lose my butt off on a bad beat. I've always known that I play good hands too aggressive and it sometimes costs me a lot.
