Should I only call the pre-flop raise? My re-raise was to try and take the pot there or having villain calling. After his re-raise I imediatly thought (AA/KK or AK). I was favorite against AK, but huge underdog against AA and KK. The pot odds where very good: 3.3 to 1 and even if I lost I would still have around 1k chips.

This was a very small raise ... I shoul have made it 3xBB, no?
Was the call OK? My reasoning was that I did not had a bad hand with 3 handed table. All-in from villain meant small pair or eventually top pair. I needed an Ace ... was this too risky?

Should I have went all-in pre-flop? In an MTT, I would have done it, but in a SNG I think this is not the best strategy, am I wrong?
It was a pretty hugly flop for me ... MasterDDawg most often would have re-raised with an high Ace or a top pair, I had the flush draw but even making it I might loose.
I was not worried with indyjoe6, as he was raised 2xBB with almost anything ...

    What would you do?

    Thanks!
  3. #3
    First tourney:

    ---Statistics---
    Data for 66 hands.
    You played 22 hands (33.33%).
You raised 7 times preflop (10.61%).
Here is your first problem - you're limping far too many hands relative to those you're raising. It's a bit hard to draw a general conclusion, but generally speaking I'm raising at least 60%+ of hands across the course of a tourney (and more if the HU battle is long).

    Specific hands:

    1. AJo in UTG+1 - I don't bother with AJo in EP early in the tourney, just open fold. As played, you might be ahead but folding to the raise is probably prudent.

    3. A8s - completing the SB is fine. When the flush flops, I would actually lead out for about 2/3 pot or 80 here. At the $5.50s you will still get lots of callers. You want to get money into the pot with the nuts, because if a fourth heart falls your action might be killed (or then again, at a $5.50 it might not if somebody thinks their low heart is good). On the turn, lead again. The best way to get a donk's money when you have the nuts is to bet and let them call, call, call. River lead is good - NEVER check the river with the nuts.

    4. 98s - limp preflop is OK from the button although I would prefer to have more limpers in front.

    5. 86o - I would make a bluff on the river rather than the turn if opp checks the turn again. A lot of donks like to slowplay the flop if they have hit top pair but they will generally bet on the turn.

    6. JTs UTG - open fold this. I don't want to play hands like JTs OOP, even for 30 chips, when I'm OOP. If I was on the button with a couple of limpers in front, I limp too but open fold here. Postflop I think your line is fine, river check is good, no idea what he had, could be anything.

    7. KQo - I would just check and see a flop here. I don't want to build a big pot OOP with a hand like KQ. Plus, if you want to raise (and I'm not suggesting you do), your raise is too small. $5.50 players aren't going to fold for another 50 chips when they've limped preflop. 120 to go if you want to raise. Postflop is good.

    8. QQ - all good. I like your re-raise and of course you have to call when opp pushes. I would not flat call preflop, at a $5.50 this sort of raise could be a wide range of hands (55+, Ax, KT-KQ) and if overcards come on the flop you won't know whether you're good. Just one of those 18% of times...make sure to make a note on this guy that this is how he plays medium pocket pairs.

    9. AJs - Hmmm, with 4 limpers in front and the blinds meaning 275 in the pot preflop and your stack at 1200, I might just shove all-in here and hope to pick up the blinds. Plus, at this level you may well get called by hands you dominate (A2-AT).

    10. Good.

[Td As] UTG (M=18.47; F) - good. Too many players limp or raise in this situation.

    11. OMG punkymonroe is an idiot for not betting the river. This is why it's a bad idea to check the nuts (OK technically KT is the nuts, but meh) on the river hoping to check raise.

    12. 99 in the SB - You HAVE to raise this. 150 to go. Why just complete? You are likely well ahead of BB's range here. Postflop is OK though.

    13. Make a note on haktar that he/she calls down to showdown with middle pair on the flop. Donk!

    14. JJ - I would make a standard raise to say 250-275 here. Result may well have been the same but you can stand to have one caller.

    15. A2o - risky flop bet against two preflop limpers, particularly OOP. I prefer to check here and take a stab on the turn if they both check behind.

    16. A8o - With two shortstack limpers in front I just shove all-in from the BB to try to take it down preflop. Even if they call and win you are short but not desperate. I would prefer to have AT+ to do this but it's very likely that these guys are calling with mediocre hands that A8 is ahead of. The alternative is to just check and see a flop but I think I prefer shoving preflop here.

[7c 8d] BU (M=11.89; f+f+F) - Depending on how tight or loose the blinds have been playing I can see a steal raise of 400 here.

    17. KJo - 400 to go, saves you 100 chips if you need to fold if somebody pushes over.

    [9s Kh] BU (M=12.89; c+f+F) - Potential steal raise?

    18. 95o in the BB - against 2 opps I would probably just check/fold with middle pair. Against one opp I would probably take a stab on the flop as you did.

    19. K7o in the SB - I think this is OK. I like the river bluff when the second A comes out.

    20. AKs in the BB - you HAVE to raise this preflop, don't just check the BB. 600 to go. Get money in the pot with your strong hands! Opp would probably have called, you could have won a much bigger pot.

    21. 98o in the SB - raise it up, 500 to go. At this blind level open raise or fold only, no calling. Sets you up to take the pot away on the flop if you miss.

    22. A9o - sorry to be harsh, but this was really bad. Firstly your preflop raise was too small. I make it at least 600 and maybe 800 to go, A9 is a strong hand 3-handed. As played, your flop lead after opp checks is fine but WHY CALL HIS PUSH? You have A high with no draw so if opp has a pocket pair, has paired any card on this board, even bottom pair, you are likely drawing to 6 outs at the most (and 3 outs if he has a T) so are at best a 3.5:1 (and maybe 7:1) underdog and the pot was laying you only 1.8 to 1 to call his push. Fold!

I'll take a look at the other one later

Here is your first problem - you're limping far too many hands relative to those you're raising. It's a bit hard to draw a general conclusion, but generally speaking I'm raising at least 60%+ of hands across the course of a tourney (and more if the HU battle is long).
Thanks for the help. I agree, I think I was way too passive on these SNG.

OK, here are my comments on the second. Sorry if I was a bit harsh on the first one, I haven't had enough sleep and am feeling grumpy! I'll also respond to your queries about my comments on the first one later.

    Overall:
    ---Statistics---
    Data for 83 hands.
    You played 28 hands (33.73%).
You raised 11 times preflop (13.25%).
Again, too passive. I'll look at specific hands and comment.
    - Don't minraise preflop. You give the BB 3-3.5:1 on the call, many times when you raise preflop the outcome you want is for everybody to fold.
    - When your stack is <10x BB (or even a bit more if you are out of position) just shove all-in preflop. Eg. Don't frig about with standard raises when your stack is 7x BB - if you minraise, get called and fold the flop this is a disaster because you have 5 BB left.
    - Don't mean to blow my own trumpet but if you haven't done so already, read the low buyin SNG dos and don'ts that swiggidy and I put together - link here

    3. JJ - This is why a lot of players think JJ is such a difficult hand to play. The big re-raise to 300 indicates a big hand like JJ-AA or AK to me but it's just so hard to lay down JJ. TT I'm folding here, QQ I'm shoving over, but JJ...well, I guess the call is OK. I would not shove over in this spot, Master isn't folding and IMO at best you have a flip here. If you have reads from other tourneys that MasterDDawg is very tight, I would fold. On the flop, yep - you have to fold.

    4. 22 UTG - Whether you limp or fold here depends on how passive the table has been preflop. On an aggressive table where there is likely to be one or more preflop raises I open fold, on a passive table where you're likely to see a flop for a limp, I limp.

    6. 84s - Good play, I play it exactly the same. Your river bet amount was just right.

    7. 65s - I think completing is fine. I play this one exactly the same too. I wouldn't take a stab on the turn since you are OOP.

    8. JJ - I would actually just shove all-in preflop. You aren't folding if anybody raises and if you're called you are likely just pushing the flop anyway, you have 11.5x BB and you're OOP, I would just shove.

    9. A8o in the SB - I would fold this, even in the SB. You are getting shortstacked and need to preserve every last chip.

    10. J7o - I would fold this. Once your stack reaches <10x BB it is shove or fold time and I would not shove J7o from the CO with 9.5x BB.

    11. K8o - fold this. Don't try to steal with weak hands like K8o from UTG, you need 5 players to fold before you can take the blinds. If it was folded to me on the button or SB I would probably try to steal.

    12. 55 - Good play. Make a note on this guy that he limp/calls AI with A-rag, you can take advantage of this if you pick up a big hand in the BB.

    13. K7o - don't minraise. I would make a standard raise here to 400, the odds are too tempting for the BB to call (3.5 to 1).

    14. AQo - this is read dependent. If UTG had been actively raising, I would shove over. If he/she had been mostly limping and hadn't raised much I would fold. Given most $5.50 players' ranges, I think a shove over here would be good, I think you are ahead of his range. Calling is the worst of your options here, you're still left with a situation where you only hit an A or Q 32% of the time and if you don't hit you mostly have to check/fold.

[3s 3h] UTG (M=14.16; F) - good fold. Too many players try to limp or raise with 33 UTG, you have to fold this.

    16. 95o in the SB - don't just complete here. Make it 400 to go when folded to in the SB. As played, I think the flop lead is fine, you win it very often here. On the turn, I would lead again with the flush draws out there, I make it 350 or so to go. You really did get unlucky on the river, that's poker...

    17. AJ - again, don't minraise, 400 to go.

    18. AQ - 5 handed, I would shove over preflop to isolate the shortstack. Nobody will call you without a super strong hand (and AQ is a strong hand 5 handed). What would you have done if any of the remaining players (all of whom outstack you) had put the squeeze on you and shoved over?

    19. QJo - Even getting 3:1 on the call I probably just fold this, it's just too easily dominated. Plus with 11.5x BB every chip is precious. As played the flop bet is good.

[Ad 2h] BU (M=8.71; r+F) - I know you're short, but depending on the blinds, potential steal raise here?

    20. ATs UTG - You have <10x BB, shove or fold. Intuitively I would have thought this was a shove but I ran it through SNGPT, it is -EV at all calling ranges, I suspect mainly because of the big stack in the BB.

    21. A6o UTG - again, push or fold, I would fold this. Nice that you got away with the steal though.

    23. K6 in the SB - tough spot. I would be tempted to shove this but it is -EV at looser calling ranges and only slightly +EV at tighter ranges. Depends on reads on kelko but I think I just fold. Postflop wasn't so good, why do you lead the flop? I would check here. The turn stab is OK but too small relative to the pot, I would make it 300.

    24. QJo - shove or fold preflop with 7x BB. I just shove this unless the SB and BB had been playing loose (which it didn't seem they had been). As played, OMG these guys are so weak/tight, they call your preflop raise then check the flop.

    25. J2s - I would raise it up on the flop to 600 to try to take it down on the flop. At low buyins an open minbet is often a cheap way to try to buy the pot (as in this case).

    26. A3s - I would not try to steal with A-rag suited from UTG, I would fold this. Sure, from the button this is fine but not from UTG. On the flop, fold to the minbet, you have no draws.

    27. J7s - I think this is fine. I might have left it until the river to take a stab though but meh.

[3h Jc] SB (M=4.87; f+f+F) - shove this. I ran it through SNGPT and it is +EV at all but the loosest calling ranges (and BB should not be calling loose since if he calls and you win, he loses half his stack). Your read is important here, if he is super loose then I fold but my default option is to shove.

    28. 76s - Sorry to be harsh, but this was ugly. Fold preflop, suited connectors lose value in shorthanded, big blind situations. Plus you should be shoving or folding preflop with <7x BB. As played, on the flop when you hit your 6, given the fact that this guy seems to open minbet every flop, I think the shove over is fine, I would expect him to have overcards here.

taipan is giving you good advice. I hope that you aren't discounting his advice by justifying your play. Try not to slowplay in these low buy-in SNGs. Just bet your hands and you will get paid off. It's all about raise raise raise raise and raise some more. Also, it's about tight tight tight tight tight and tight.

With the blind structure and the starting stacks, you don't have time to be limping and playing pots. You get in and get out. Big plays work better in these. You play tight early so that you have a chance to money late in the tourney. Look for big hands and play them hard.

As played, on the flop when you hit your 6, given the fact that this guy seems to open minbet every flop, I think the shove over is fine, I would expect him to have overcards here.
Me too I was expecting him to have overcards ... I have to remember not to play suited connectors in shorhanded situations ...

    Thanks again for th advice!!

With the blind structure and the starting stacks, you don't have time to be limping and playing pots. You get in and get out. Big plays work better in these. You play tight early so that you have a chance to money late in the tourney. Look for big hands and play them hard.
    Thanks for the tips

Postflop is good.
The thing is that raising sets me up to a c-bet on the flop with good chances of taking the flop ...
That's true, but it can also get very expensive if you miss, c-bet and get raised on the flop. If you want to raise I would make it 120.

Actually, here I was worried with slow playing AK/AQ or even AA/KK/QQ, do you think this happens at the $5.50 SNG level?
Yes it does happen, a lot of players like to pull the limp/re-raise trick with AA and KK (particularly from UTG) but I think the times you pick up the blinds preflop or get called and win make this a +EV move.

Here I was always worried of the Ax (x > 7)
With JJ the only hands you're worried about are QQ-AA which will almost certainly re-raise. If they want to call your preflop with crap that you dominate, you should be happy (you do need to play carefully postflop if overcards come though).

The alternative is to just check and see a flop but I think I prefer shoving preflop here.
The thing is that I was worried of the other players stacks as a lose will reduce my stack to 800 chips, which would put me on fold/push mode. However, it's true that I ended up calling and run with Lil Ironic2 ...
If you were prepared to call a push from this guy (it would be madness not to) then just shove all-in yourself.

Actually I misread the HH and didn't see the UTG caller, I would fold this too.

I'll reply to your comments on the other one separately.

You're right, but as this is a SNG, I had trouble shoving all-in preflop when in the bubble ...
Whilst I don't advocate going nuts and making -EV shoves, as (I can't remember which player) said, "In order to live, you have to be prepared to die". When your stack is short, taking down the blinds uncontested is a great outcome and the best way to maximise your fold equity is to just shove all-in preflop.

If someone would have shoved I guess I would have folded ... the thing was that if any of the 3 remaining players had JJ/QQ/KK/AA I would be out of the tourney most of the time and as a SNG that's bad ... am I wrong to think this way?
JJ is a flip against AQ, so the only hands you're worried about are QQ-AA and AK. I guess in this situation flat calling isn't totally terrible because the check-down convention means that you are unlikely to be bluffed off the best hand and can see all 5 cards without putting any more chips in. I still prefer to shove over though. For all the times you get called by QQ-AA and AK you will also get called by A-rag.

Sorry, misread the HH again. I didn't see the UTG raise. Instafold.

    SNGPT? Is that worth it?
Absolutely, when your BR can support it, it is the best poker-related $79 I have ever spent. Good preflop decisions and sound bubble play are the essence of SNG success IMO.

I think most of the time I could get away with the steal of 3xBB, no? Furthemore, if someone has 77+ I would be mostly dead if I shove ...
    am I wrong?
I would fold this but if I had a strong hand here I would not frig about with standard raises, I would just shove. Interestingly you need a very very strong hand to shove here, SNGPT says the range is like 99/TT+, AKo, AQs+.

I didn't read replies, but here's another response for your first tourney.

Congrats and cheers to your first sng. Here are some comments. Let me know if you have questions.

    Hand 3
I'd check/raise the turn up to about 200. This is a callable bet by at least one of your opponents, anyone with the Kh will draw. As played on the turn, on the river, I think you made a good bet. You absolutely do not want to check the river and miss out on value. People were obviously willing to call call call the whole way, when that K comes up, anyone who was drawing with the Kh will probably call you.

    Hand 4
There's no need to limp here, just lay it down preflop.

    Hand 6
Same thing, only this one is even easier to lay down. You're UTG, with 7 players left to act. If any one of them raises, it was a pointless limp.

    Hand 8
I think you'll find that at the $5 level, your play with Q's here is profitable. All kinds of donks are willing to raise and reraise with mid/low pocket pairs.

    [Td As] UTG (M=18.47; F)
Good lay down. A lot of people at the $5's will limp or raise this preflop. UTG it is a waste of time.

    Hand 12
I like the fact that you did not let up on the turn. However if he calls the turn, you have to check/fold the river.

    Hand 14
Typically I would make it 300 to go rather than 400, especially since you only have one opponent.

    Hand 15
I don't think I like your lead-out bet on the flop here. Two limpers, one could easily have a J, and your hand has no potential to hit the turn against a J.

    Hand 16
I definitely do not like the BB steal raise here. Both opponents are short stacked and are willing to take a gamble. Short stacked limpers should set off alarm bells for you, meaning they usually have strength way beyond just Ax offsuit. Just check and see the flop.

    Hand 17
Beware that while it is good to be aggressive when the blinds get higher, you are putting yourself at a major risk here. I would keep the raise lower, like 400 instead of 500. I regard this raise as a steal raise because KJ is not a strong hand. Stealing the blinds from UTG is very dangerous. I would normally fold this hand preflop: 1. kingjames in the BB has out outstacked. 2. You are UTG and there are 4 loose players left to act.

    Hand 19
Preflop, my opinion is that the best option here is to fold, the 2nd best option is to raise to 500. Don't tolerate limpers. If you suspect a weak hand, do not hesitate to take their chips.

    Hand 20
Don't slowplay those suckers preflop. Don't tollerate limpers.

    Hand 21
Don't limp unless you know for sure sttatt is not going to raise you.

    Hand 22
Yes, you should have not minraised before the flop. And yes it was too risky to call the all-in.
As played preflop, just check behind on the flop because you never know what kingjames has, seeing as he limped and then called your minraise (which is to say, he could have just about ANY hand). Then when he pushes over your 400, you have no reason to call with ace high. If you fold here, you still have 2000 chips left and can easily build yourself back up by picking some hands to push preflop with.

So you limp with only low PPs and a high A and K in the earlier part of the SNGs?

That's my current experience also (after 6 $5.50 SNGs). Thanks!

It was a risky move, but I did not had too many chips (i.e. my M was around 9) so I thought that I had to make a move here.

Actually, my hand was not bad for a 6 handed table (I think!). So for the same reason as hand 14, I had to try and accomulate some chips ...

I've found that $5.50 SNG players are quite tight when blinds reach 75/150, so this move most of the time is profiterable. Even if I get called a c-bet will win the pot 70-80% of the time ...

    I think here I should have raised 3xBB ...

    Yeah, the min-raise was a mistake ...

    thanks for the help!
