I don't think I'm getting any better (trimmed tourney)

Default I don't think I'm getting any better (trimmed tourney)

If anyone has time to take a look that would be great. Do I compete well enough for marginal hands? Do I gamble too much? Towards the end I think I made many pushes that would be -ev in sngtools but when my M is low I will only let my stack decline to a certain extent before I start open pushing with a big range - any comments?

Speculative but I quite like the occasional raise like this when its still cheap. A chance to win straight away and then a chance to win on the flop too plus the small chance of a monster flop. Not to be overdone of course. Is this a matter of taste or does tight ABC poker always prevail?

The wierd turn bet kind of threw me off. I assume I should just raise him? I thought if he was chasing some weird inside straight the Q might have filled it but I think now that's too timid, could maybe made a few more chips on the river?

I like to limp in with a weakish hand when it's going to be HU because often the pot can be taken down on the flop. Might it be better to raise more aggressively though? People sometimes seem to think they should defend their blind so call a raise but then fold if they miss the flop?

Hmm my steal goes wrong, but I felt I was priced in to call. I guess I should have been reluctant to steal with a weak hand with a small stack still to act.

I really don't like my stack to drop below 1000 with these blinds so I am prepared to open push with a fairly wide range. I'd rather gamble than be blinded down to a point where even doubling through doesn't really help me, but I know this may be contentious (or stupid )

Brilliant, I think I'm back in it. But alas no. Cruel game sometimes. I've included comments by hands to show my thought processes to hopefully generate a little discussion or at least so people can explain to me the error of my ways! Thanks to anyone who takes a look

  2. #2
Hand 1 - I probably lead the turn. It seems pretty obvious no one had a 10. So the 2 is unlikely to have helped anyone. I think check calling is the worst thing you can do because you have no idea where you are in the hand.

Hand 3 - Limping K-7 is fine, it only costs u 10, & check fold the flop when you don't hit.

Hand 4 - Meh, I am not a big fan of limping K-J from MP as you have to dump it if anyone raises you.

Hand 5 - I hate this raise. You are UTG+1 with 9-10 suited. I play much tighter earlier. You are lucky your opponent didn't hit this flop as you could easily have lost a lot of chips on a nothing hand.

Hand 6 - K-8?? Either raise this to steal the blinds or fold, this hand is far too weak to limp with from the button. At these blind levels, I fold this even on the button. I think you were lucky here that your opponent only raised small, but even then, I would have folded, in most cases your opponent holds a better K or an Ace & you have lost chips for nothing.

    Hand 7
Nicely played, I would raise it approx the same on both. You were right not to trap with Kings. It is likely your opponent has either an Ace or a PP & the last thing you want to give is a free card that might beat you.

    Hand 8
Meh, I would probably fold this, all you have is Ace high. Unless you have a read that your opponent will do a stop & go with any 2 cards, this is a fold.

    Hand 10
I dont mind the limp, at these levels I generally prefer a raise, but you have a decent hand so its an ok limp. However I hate the flop bet, 120 into a 200 pot??? That seems awfully weak to me, bet the pot here - 200.

    Hand 11
I don't think I would raise 8-10 with 3 people to act unless I had a stack to gamble with. You don't really. As played its an easy call.

    Hand 12
After a limper, I dump A-10 here, esp with 4 people still to act. Anyone who calls you likely has you beat. You were lucky on the flop. If your reraised here preflop you have to fold & you have just wasted a quarter of your chips. I would just bet this flop, - though I would bet more like half the pot - as well, theres enough in the pot to be a solid increase in your stack.

    Hand 13
What are you doing calling a bet with 8-3???? With a hand as junky as this, I need to hit at least 2 pair to continue playing.

    Hand 15
I call this all day, you are against 2 short stacks & your calling 480 into a pot thats 1500, into a pot thats closed, 3-1 odds, you should win the pot 1 in 3 times with A-K.

    Hand 16
Meh A-4 is a little lower than I'd like for the push, but its not horrible. As long as you realize if someone calls you, you are likely dominated.

    Hand 18
Check fold. If you are going to push, do it pre flop. However I would just check fold this hand as well.

    Hand 19
Fine, I would have pushed here too

    Hand 20
Fold, dont worry about the big stack, worry about your stack & doubling up

    Hand 21
Meh, I am not sure about everyone, but K-4. Seems a bit of a loose push. This would seem to be -EV to me.

    Hand 22
I play it the same. A-J is plenty good enough for me to push over his raise. Unlucky to lose when you had him dominated.

    Thanks Caesar, a few questions:

Hand 6 - K-8?? Either raise this to steal the blinds or fold, this hand is far too weak to limp with from the button. At these blind levels, I fold this even on the button. I think you were lucky here that your opponent only raised small, but even then, I would have folded, in most cases your opponent holds a better K or an Ace & you have lost chips for nothing.
But is my hand not better than random which is what the blinds will play? is it not ok to use my position on them to try to win some money without needed to commit many chips pre flop?

    Hand 7
Nicely played, I would raise it approx the same on both. You were right not to trap with Kings. It is likely your opponent has either an Ace or a PP & the last thing you want to give is a free card that might beat you.
It's true I don't want to get drawn out on but if he has an Ace or a PP he is drawing to 2 or 3 outs which is fairly unlikely and might I not get an extra bet out of him if I just check and he has a PP? I wonder if long term this makes a bit more money

    Hand 21
Meh, I am not sure about everyone, but K-4. Seems a bit of a loose push. This would seem to be -EV to me.
I'm not at all sure what the balence is between making only +ev pushes against the fact you may not get any +ev pushes to make! At some points I have to push to keep my stack large enough to be of any use and at the moment if I get a high card and it's folded to me in latish position I am thinking about making a push. Table dependant of course. Maybe if I just sat tight and ate the blinds I might get a decent hand finally but would I get called? Would I have enough chips so that the double up puts me in contention?

    Thanks again

Just a comment that has been covered many times before but at the $5's you should, generally, be folding everything except really premium hands at levels 1-3. K7o and KJo, Level 1 for example, is far too loose here IMO

Yes your hand is better than 2 random hands, but if you don't raise, both blinds could literally have any 2 and if you are played back at on the flop, you have no idea where you stand. Which is why I would either raise or fold here rather than limp.

Speculative but I quite like the occasional raise like this when its still cheap. A chance to win straight away and then a chance to win on the flop too plus the small chance of a monster flop. Not to be overdone of course. Is this a matter of taste or does tight ABC poker always prevail?

FPS but you need to play postflop well. EP i dont get fancy, you want position to play this way.

do not trap, need flop to be rainbow and no str8 possibilities to do it and even then at this level its more profitable to bet. tho i the sng experiment you could check flop on board i mentioned.

I like to limp in with a weakish hand when it's going to be HU because often the pot can be taken down on the flop. Might it be better to raise more aggressively though? People sometimes seem to think they should defend their blind so call a raise but then fold if they miss the flop?

hmm many ways to play pf

Hmm my steal goes wrong, but I felt I was priced in to call. I guess I should have been reluctant to steal with a weak hand with a small stack still to act.

stealing here with small stack beside isnt great move. see the sng experiment for i think it was fjuanal comments when flying saucy was small stack.

My M is dropping so my range is widening, I thought this was just about good enough to raise and then a nice scary flop to bet

i think this was poor pf play. if your raising you need to make it 350-400 now, plus you would almost be commiting to it on flop. do you really want to do that?
You havent mentioned a range for the limper either which concerns me if you just looked at you hand and used it as the only factor in this situation. calling is the worst play while folding is fine.
also your position aint great with many behind.
please quote this hand separatly and ill discuss.

I really don't like my stack to drop below 1000 with these blinds so I am prepared to open push with a fairly wide range. I'd rather gamble than be blinded down to a point where even doubling through doesn't really help me, but I know this may be contentious (or stupid )

haha! Ok I will sing that song from now on. Well probably.

really wanted to call, why? the right play is fold bar a good read. why not be happy to make the correct play.
When people just go all in on me I always get suspicious and think they are bluffing. But I guess they aren't often enough to call without a read. I just remember the times they show the damn bluff and laugh at me

You are right of course my thinking is still much too limited, it seems so difficult to put people on hands and work out what they might be from their bets. Always seems much easier in HOH What range would you put that limper on? 9 10s+ JQo+ 22+? I'm expecting a raise from AJo+ JJ+ ?

    Th 7d] BU (M=3.75; f+f+F)

    easy push
Really? I used to do this kind of thing but lately I thought I was being told to be much tighter. That may be on the bubble though. Or is it just that my M is so low?

I just played another one and was really tight in the 1st 3 levels, only played a couple of premium hands had about 2000 by level 4. Don't really pick up a hand during this level and don't try any steals. End up with 1500 chips when blinds are 150 and there are still 6 players in and I am second last. This is the situation I keep finding myself in and I'm really not doing well from it. I can't bully people with steal raises cos I am <10BB. So am I just waiting for a premium hand? But who will call a push if I am folding every hand? I think I'm trying too hard at this point and busting myself out. If I can start getting into the money from these positions I think I'll really improve my ROI

    Anyway thanks daGoat

The key to SnGo is the ability to play short stacks. If you cannot play short stack well when the field thins out to 6 players then you are not going to be a consistent winner. Master the art of playing short stack and you will become a successful SnGo player.
Sure, we all want to play with a huge stack. But what if you are dealt AA and a donk calls you AA and flops a full house with T2. Your stack is cut down to 2X BB. Now what? How are you going to play the rest of the tourney? Give up and sign up in another tourney? Or are you going to fight like a tiger and win 1st place by turning around with a short stack? It is not impossible to make a come back, an old poker saying is this, "all you need is a chip and a chair". Let me tell you that a WSOP champion won a WSOP with one chip left in the final table. This is how the saying became popular.

This is so true. you will find yourself so often with 10xBB when blinds are around 100-150. it is key that you survive and dog it out.

THough i say i defo dont use it enough SNGPT is key especially in the turbos i now play. you will a least get a feel for situations after studying HH.

So does SNGPT take into account stack sizes? Might an open push in the CO with say K10 be -ev with a big stack but +ev with a small stack? In other words does it consider M as well as cards, position and calling ranges?

Yes it does. If you don't have it, download the trial version and have a play with it.

it does it all bar one key thing............reads, ie your villians hand ranges. if you keep gettin gthis wrong itll hurt you.

you get better at it tho.

you say +EV vs Big stack, -EV vs Small stack. you just need to figure smaller stack will have a wider range depending on villian 2.

Right guess I better register it and start experimenting. By the way all this is just to lull you into a false sense of security before I go on the rampage in the Euro SNG experiment
