I find this is often made by a hand that just made 2 pair with that ace, hoping that you have AJ+ and call, or QQ-KK and think it's a bluff.

Yeah probably 2 pairs. Suppose no reads:
With him having the 3rd biggest stack on the table, the preflop calling that raise with ace Rag (suited maybe) on a heads up pot looks pretty good to him...horrible call from his part on the flop though.

What hands could he have that you beat? A5, A7-AT or a bluff.

I really don't think he has those hands more often than he has 2 pair here. I fold.
