Bill is a pretty tight player, although he was calling more than raising preflop. Push or fold?

Easy fold - You have a short stack behind you and I would rather play a hand like KJ when I am the first to enter a pot.
Poker is easy, it's winning at poker that's hard.

Easy fold for me here. You have two medium stacks to your left who don't have you covered by all that much, I would rather be open pushing into them rather than taking the risk of being dominated here. Plus you don't have all that much FE because you'd be pushing into the big stack.

I figured you'd say this is an easy fold, but it just seemed like at the time this may be the best hand to push with because of my limited time remaining. Obviously bill's raise meant there was a fair chance he had a better hand, but I still thought there was a chance he'd fold, and I thought it may even be a coinflip with him raising a lower pair. Anyway, so in this situation is it better to push pretty much any two cards with only about 6xBB remaining when opening, than it is to push someones raise with a reasonable but not great hand?

I know this is probably elementary stuff, but I've only been playing SNG's for a couple weeks.

    Hero raises [$1152].
    EvansM8 folds.
    bill1939 calls [$852].

You hit the nail on the head. Remember Sklansky's gap theory, you need a much stronger hand to call (or push over) a raise than you need to open raise.

Also pay attention to the number of players that need to fold before you successfully steal the blinds and the stack sizes of the players that need to fold relative to your own. In your situation I would push pretty much any two cards if it was folded to me in the SB and I was pushing into EvansM8 with 1544 chips to your 1252, but I would be more selective from UTG with four players still to act.

BTW, np asking any sort of question on this board however basic it might be.

Thanks again taipan. I have read the gap theory but its just taking a while to sink in. I do normally adhere to it, but my low stack tempted me into breaking it. Hopefully I've learned my lesson for next time .
