You have to showdown ace high sometimes. Pretty safe bet that nobody has much of anything given the turn action, and villain's river bet is weaksauce. NH sir.

Are we reading the same hand history?

Fold preflop (raise from the SB after limps means usually a big hand, AJ plays badly against most people's range there), fold the flop. Fold the river.

Sometimes you can make a big call with ace high when they either have the nuts or nothing and their line makes no sense, but villain here easily could have a queen or be making a blocking bet with like 99+. He could be "bluffing" with AK and still have you beat. All you beat is a worse ace high or some random unpaired hand.

this is easy call preflop, we have a pretty hand and position against someone with a well defined range

What were you hoping would happen when you called the flop bet? Most people don't raise mediocre hands from the small blind, so you really don't beat much of anything, and even if you hit your ace you might lose a big pot to 2 pair or AK. I'd be surprised if calling that flop bet resulted in you winning the pot even 10% of the time.

I can see why you'd think ace high is good on the river so it's not that horrible of a river call, but I suspect that it's still -EV.

    Massimo,

Fold the flop please, calling wouldn't be bad if you were HU with the SB, but you still have a player yet to act behind you and you are only calling with ace-high.

you sound like you are seriously concerned!

So I agree, making the flop call was bad.
