ever since i played my first turbo, 99% of the SnG's i play are turbos. you cant beat the time it takes to play them, and people just throw their chips in the middle at the lower levels.
eeevees are not monies yet...they are like baby monies.
  3. #3
I'll have a look through this. I've played lots of $6.50s and I think playing some turbos can REALLY hone your push/fold instincts. In a normal game if you're lucky you sometimes never have to make a shortstack push, in a turbo that's much rarer.

Players who understand ICM and when to push/fold (or call) have a real edge at the $6.50 turbos IMO.

Congratulations on winning your first turbo, well done! Some overall comments:

    - You are playing too loose early on. Don't limp (or worse - call raises) with crappy cards early in the tourney. Don't believe what people say that because the blinds increase fast you have to play loose early. You should be preserving your chips for a good pushing opportunity. 200 chips spewed away early could mean a) a loss of 400 chips if you push and double up later b) a loss of folding equity when you need it.

    - You have the right idea with your pushes but you aren't picking your spots well. You need to be more selective with what you push from early position, KQ with ~10x BB from the CO is generally not a good push. Conversely, when you're folded to in the SB you can push a very wide range indeed.

    - Your HU play was good, very nice you came back from being so shortstacked to win.

    - Download and play with both SNGPT (you can use the tutorial without registering) and SNG Wizard (30 day free trial). I guarantee they will open your eyes as to pushing/folding. I know your BR probably can't support it now but longer term they are essential tools for SNGs (and particularly turbos).

    1. Q7o in the BB - I check and see a flop here. At the $6.50s the idiots will call you with A-crap and you're behind. Flop is good.

    2. 32o - super easy fold preflop to the minraise. Why call off 45 chips with the worst hand in poker when you'll be OOP for the rest of the hand?

    3. Q4s - easy preflop fold again, even from the button. Don't even bother with these rags.

    4. J9s - easy preflop fold again. From the button I might try this but not from MP. On the flop, c-bet a little less, he'll fold to 200-250 as often as 300 and if he calls/pushes over you save yourself 50-100 chips.

    5. 92s in the SB - I fold this but I don't hate completing. As played, you don't have odds to chase the flush, (you need to call 100 to see a 250 pot but are only about 4.5 to 1 against to hit on the turn) fold the flop. Check/fold the turn, it is very likely that opp might have something like A7 or K-crap, don't bother here. You spewed 225 chips here for nothing.

    6. QJo in the BB - I think the push is OK but at a $6.50 turbo you get called VERY often by A-rag and better Ks, so you'll likely be at least a 40/60 underdog if called. Nice when it works though. I think I prefer to check and see a flop and only get froggy if I hit a Q or J.

    7. 97o - I tend to fold this without a read that SB and BB are tight. At a $6.50 you usually tend to get called by any pair, any ace and any two cards T and up making this -EV.

    8. KQo - I don't like this push. KQo from the CO with 9x BB is not a good push, particularly into 3 bigger stacks. Fold this. Even if opps call with 66+, AT+ this is only slightly +EV and it is usually not the case that opps are this tight in a $6.50.

    10. KJo - This one is marginal for me depending on how tight the blinds are. If they have been playing tight I push, if they are loose I fold. The problem is you can't standard raise here due to your stack size. Also note that you've been pushing a lot recently so opps' calling ranges might loosen up (but at a $6.50 opps generally don't pay attention).

    11. A8s - raise or fold, no calling at these blind levels. I would probably have made it 500 to go. You spewed 200 chips here.

    12. KQo - bad push from UTG+1. This is -EV at virtually all calling ranges. You need to be more selective what you push with ~10x BB from EP.

[Qh Kd] UTG (M=8.55; F) - at least you folded KQ here!

[5s Qh] SB (M=5.20; f+f+f+f+F) - easy shove any two cards here. When you have <10x BB and it's folded to you in the SB you can push a very wide range.

    14. 95o in the BB - I would check the flop rather than leading. True there's a good chance that opp missed too but you can't afford to take the risk. If opp checked behind I might take a stab on the turn.

    15. A7s - fold. You have 14x BB so are not desperate and are shoving into the big stack in the BB. I wait here.

[9s 8d] BU (M=3.50; f+f+F) - hard to tell without stack sizes but I might shove this.

    16. J7o - I fold this. See what those guys called with, QT FFS! Told you they were loose. That said, the push is not terrible. You were lucky to triple up here, nice!

    17. 95s - nice move. He calls you with virtually any spade though (and he'll be behind).

    18. Q9o - just open shove rather than raising slightly less than 2.5x BB, particularly if you're going to call a push. Depending on reads I might actually just fold to the push after you raised. Opp seems to be playing quite tight, folding his SB to your BB quite often so he probably has you beat here.

19-25. Well played, all good shoves. Opp is playing WAY too tight, folding his SB to your BB way too often. In these situations you can push like top 60-70% of hands. Nice win from having almost a 10:1 chip disadvantage!

Thanks Taipan, useful analysis as always. I've played a few more turbos since and I'm really starting to enjoy them, although last night my kk got called by 57s and he made a straight!! Still that's good for me in the long run.

If you have doubled up early so you have say 2600 and the blinds are 200 with 5 or 6 players left do you bother making raises with say A9o on the button or are you just saving chips and looking for hands to push with?

This is a tough spot. If I have the blinds covered in the situation you describe I would probably just shove, if I don't have them covered I would probably raise to 500 and hope and pray to take the blinds. With 3000+ chips in this spot I standard raise for sure, with <2000 I shove no problem but 10-15x BB is such an awkward stack size.
  7. #7
yeah I wasn't sure what to do, the big stack was in the BB. In the end I raised to 500 and the big stack re-raised to 1200 and I folded. I didn't play another hand for a couple of orbits, people were pushing all in left right and centre but no one was calling. Eventually I pick up KK with 1800 left and decide to just raise to 500 because I hadn't played a hand for a while and no one was calling pushes. Do you think this was a reasonable decision? I know aware players would be suspicious but I figured this is ok at these limits. I got a single caller (big stack again) so it worked out this time (apart from he made that str8 I referred to above

regulars you might get away with it but its essential to get SNGPT or SNGWIZ for turbos. this is where your major edge comes from. Fish dont know what to do.

i bought SNGPT out of my own money when i began not BR. its only the price of a computer game or tuesday night drinking session you could do without.

I agree with this, SNGPT was the best $79 I ever spent. Think of it this way, if it helps you win 4 $6.50 turbos (which it will!) then it has paid for itself. Goat is right, fish have no clue about ICM, understanding when to push and fold (and how to put players on calling ranges) will give you a GIGANTIC edge at the $6.50s. Even at the $16s that Goat and I play there are still plenty of players who have NFI what they are doing in this area.

The thing with turbos is that even if you manage to double or even triple up early, because the blinds increase so fast you WILL get to a situation where you need to push or call an all-in so SNGPT/SNG Wiz is essential.

Goat BTW what does a beer cost in Ireland? For USD 79 (EUR 60-65 right?) that is a shit load of beers at EUR 3-4 each lol

cost me about 55 euro i think.

nah beers got poxy expensive here in pubs and clubs. about 5-6 euro for one in city centre, government tax is trying to curb the bad drinking image we have.

ppl are still drinking the same amount anyway though but we aint that happy. can blow 100 in a night easy.

but the one good thing i still hold dear is in local pubs a guinness is still the cheapest at 3.80 euro. hmm seriously i like my guinness!!!

BTW anyone who has drank guinness outside of ireland has no idea how good it tastes.
it doesnt travel well AT ALL plus any american ive seen pour it from a tap has just about MADE ME CRY!!!!!!

Anyway i should get back to this SNG experiment.

I haven't had the pleasure of going to Ireland (I was supposed to go when I lived in London but trip got cancelled multiple times ) but I hear that the Guinness in Ireland is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than anywhere else in the world. Friends of mine who have been didn't like it when they had it here in Aust but were total converts after a trip to Ireland.

That said we have a decent selection of local brews down here for about A$4-5 (EUR 2.50-3.00, GBP 1.50-2.00) and no they aren't f*cking Fosters!!!!!!

okay well we have hijacked this post but guinness is important.

ill hit you with a little knowledge on guinness

    Besides the fact it doesnt travel well;

it need the pipes/taps to flow in a pub (ie ppl keep buying it and the next keg is ready to go). this doesnt happen abroad coz enough ppl arent buying it.

it should be poured in 3 stages as oppossed to the allowable 2 stages. and allowed to settle between each stage. doesnt happen in america coz they are used to bottles all the time and havent a breeze how to use taps (though one guy did in a boston bar, took it off the connection and used it as a weapon, very funny)

Its not black but a very dark ruby red!!

Not to re-hijack the thread, but here's my opinion:
You could spend $79 on SnGPT, or you could just read and take most of the advice in this forum on good push/fold strategy. I sense that someone's going to have strategy guide on low M, late game play coming out soon.

I think that some people would benefit from buying SnG PT and others would not. Players who already understand ICM and good positional push strategy, how to play the stacks, etc, probably do not need it. I also think that if you play from intuition and experience you probably do not need to buy it, as long as you are willing to read up on the forums and learn about ICM and late game strategy.

If you are new to SnG's or are a very "calculating" type of player, you would probably benefit from it.

Oh and btw, the Guinness we get in the U.S. is one of my least favorite stouts. I quite enjoy stouts and think there is a plethora of far better options for U.S. enthusiasts.

Guiness is fine from time to time, I tend to drink lager. As for the topic in hand I can see that learning what hands to push can be achieved fairly easily, but what to call with is another matter. I used to be pretty loose with my calling but I get the feeling I need to be much tighter. I folded AQ on the bubble the other night. I think it's probably much more read dependent - how often the guy has been pushing, how desperate I think they are, stuff like that. Am I right?
Must get more aggressive - Tonight we dine in $25NL! rah rah rah! etc

I notice I'm intuitively pushing more or less the ranges SngPt indicate but my calling ranges need some work. It's difficult to correctly estimate the distribution effect when it's 3-5 handed. 55-60% chip equity is hard to fold if you're used to cashgames

SngPt is absolutely necessary imo if you're serious about winning at Sng's.
