Default To Chat or not to Chat

I am not a big chatter at all during sngs, but i have noticed that i tend to get wraped up in arguments with people when i go with a read and call thier bluff with middle pair or hit a draw on what they percieve as bad odds, etc...

Today I have decided to mute the chat all-together so i wont get baited into useless banter with people.
Just curioius to what other people's take on this is.

Have some of you played better while muting the chat?
Do some of you use the chat to your advantage (getting people on tilt, etc.)?

Yes, I try to use the chat to my advantage but I don't get carried away. It is hard to keep up with all the chat details, especially when multi-tasking.

Random question: Are you from hull Dre?

Sure i was playing against someone with dredayxxx username the other day on stars.

If you use stars spend the time writing notes on your opponents. you don't even see the chat.

No, i play mostly UltimateBet. And i do like taking notes. Just notice a leak in my game where i feel i have to justify plays to villans when they call me a donk. I got sidetracked the other day arguing with a guy, while i had another table going and shorteing down to the bubble and didnt even notice. THats when I knew i had to make a change.

I will only chat when I know that it will get into someone's head. For example, below is an exchange I had last night and the hand that it involved

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t30 (9 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

    CO (t1190)
    Button (t1750)
    SB (t1400)
    BB (t1490)
    UTG (t1590)
    UTG+1 (t1505)
    Hero (t1530)
    MP2 (t1585)
    MP3 (t1460)

    Preflop: Hero is MP1 with A, A.
UTG raises to t90, 1 fold, Hero raises to t180, 6 folds, UTG calls t90.

    Flop: (t405) T, J, 5 (2 players)
UTG bets t90, Hero raises to t420, UTG calls t330.

    Turn: (t1245) 5 (2 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets t930 (All-In), UTG folds.

    Final Pot: t2175

    Results in white below:
    No showdown. Hero wins t2175.

    UTG said, "???"
UTG said, "gator u have QQ beat?"
GatorJH said, "since you folded I guess I must have"
    UTG said, "ur a * * *"
    UTG said, "f /a/g"
UTG said, "dude u like men"
    UTG said, "jewbag"
GatorJH said, "jewbag with your chips"

He was done after that, you could tell he was on total tilt.

I almost never talk in general. In a cash game Ill defend a fish and tell whoever is berating them to chill out. If that doesnt work I will typically try to deflect their attacks to me so the fish doesnt leave. In tournies I dont really see as big of a point of chatting, and never really "defend" my plays. In a HU SNG, if somebody flips out I will just say "play me again."

When Im running poorly or just in a shitty mood in a cash game you will see me challenging people to HU matches.

best way to deal with it if you keep getting distracted is in one sitting just give out the most abusive writing and tirade of curse words.

You will get banned but you'll go out like a lion!!!

I actively like chatting if people with a bit of friendliness and wit happen to be at the table.

Your perflop reraise in that hand was disgusting.

I like to chat if I know I can really p!ss someone off. I also like to change my avatar to that of the person I'm trying to irritate. But I only do any of this when someone else started the exchange. It is rare that I would initiate proceedings.

I will make open ended comments on particularly odd plays...

    "Wow... you just did that"
    "Huh..."
"So THAT's where my aces went"
"400 chips to win 60... hmmm"
"Your crude attempts to tilt me are working perfectly"

I also like "conversationally sniping" when 2 other players start to get into it. I will throw in an "um... OK...?" here and there, or better yet, sharkscope them and post their stats after a long flame/rant from a particularly bad player....
"You talk a lot for a guy with a -45% ROI"
"So was losing $2315 this year at SNG's part of your overall strategy?"

And sometimes I'll just post the URL for 'scope and leave it at that...
(My ROI isn't that great, but it's +, so I'm not ashamed)
There is no such thing as free checking...

    HAHA...

I've often used sharkscope to embarass a guy who thinks he knows everything... people who say shit like:
"do you know what reverse implied odds are?"
"the chances of hitting that were 33.5%, you were getting the odds to call"
"its push or fold strategy for you now!"

usually these pricks are long term losers. Just give them a

"nice stats on sharkscope...consistent loser apparently!"

    or

"according to sharkscope.com you've played 356 games but lost $760. good job!"

My sharkscope stats are slightly in the red but I just do it to shut these assholes up.

    Lol...

It works aswell, they have no reply once you've outted them as a losing player...

I had one guy say "yeah but I win live"

Nearly everyone at the table went "lmfao" lol

I don't think it's a good idea to bring sharkscope to people's attention at the tables or to point out their ROI and profit/loss (although I must admit I have done it myself occasionally when I suffer a truly bad beat).

We've all seen truly horrible players at our tables who have lost thousands of dollars - do you really want the awful truth to dawn on these players and for them to stop playing? Sure, putting these idiots in their place feels good but winning their money feels better!

sorry taipan gotta disagree. theres always more fish to take money from.... and doesnt it feel oh so good to shut up the fish with "hey im up $3000 more than u... and only 2k of that is me"? thats a classic, along with "wait so calling an all in with JQo... is that how you wound up with an ROI of -60?"

I like it when players think I did a bad play and berate me for it. My response is always "put my in your notes and search for me in the future."

letting everyone know you know about sharkscope is -EV for sure, as is the dick wagging you're all engaging in.

    seriously
bringing up sharkscope is absolutely idiotic.
telling fish wat ROI is and whether or not calling with QJo is smart is the dubmest thing you could possibly do.

if you have time to check sharkscope while playing and chat with other people "trying to make them tilt", youre not playing enough tables or concetrating hard enough on your game. Play more tables or post some hands instead of shitting where u eat.

Never ever ever do this. Why make the fish think about whether their play is bad? Do you really want them to google "Hold'em strategy", go buy Harrington's books or even stumble across this site or 2+2?
