Default JJ to a shove level 1 - call? ($16)

Hero is Anarchoi (who used to post on these boards, don't know why he stopped). This is 5th hand, no reads but opp hadn't done anything out of the ordinary in the first 4 hands.

Call or fold? QQ+ I'm calling for sure, TT- easy fold, but JJ...

    Hero (t930)

    Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with J, J.
1 fold, Hero raises to t80, 3 folds, CO calls t80, Button calls t80, SB raises to t1490, 1 fold, Hero ????

What a strange move. Does villain know who you are? Is it possible he's on tilt? Really looks like he doesn't want to play postflop. So what doesn't he want to play postflop with? AK, maybe 44-99 or something. If so, we are crushing his range and it has to be a call, but I don't know if I could do it. Obviously, we're only getting burned here by QQ,KK,AA but would he really do this with any of these holdings?

By that logic, he must have JJ?????

    gamboooooooooooooooool.

feels like squeeze play to me. Why is QQ the dividing line?

against opp's who use this allin push thing early. i think QQ is good dividing line. only 50/50 vs AK, and ahead of lower PP's

i usually get QQ in pf if i can at low levels.

calling with JJ adds more 50/50's which i dont like to take since opp is a donk.

how big of a donk is he if you occassionally fold to his 77 here because you don't want to race? HUUUGE EV pick up for him. There is plenty of dead money in there to justify racing here, especially since we have the pair.

DONK is me, didnt think there was much overlay early since tai has a stack round 1500.Well i assumed he had 1500 but actually just checked again and he has 900 roughly. i should go to bed.
    call!!

I think it all hinges on whether we can exclude AA from and include hands like 88-99 in Villain's range.

    Doing some ICM:
    - If Hero folds he has 850 chips worth 6.61% of the prize pool
    - If Hero calls and wins he has 2040 chips worth 14.68% of the prize pool
    - If Hero calls and loses he is out.

So Hero needs to be at least 45% against opp's range to make this a good call.

So assuming opp pushes over with:
    - 99+, AK Hero is 48% to win so should call
    - TT+, AK Hero is 43% to win so should fold
    - TT-KK (excl AA) and AK he is 47% to win so should call.

I think on balance I call this

I'd call with this stack. Fold with 1500. It's close.

A lot of times you will see very mediocare hands doing this move, Trying to buy the pot based on everyone's limp.

I would say the most liklely hands for villian are midpair (55-TT) or AJ/AT.

I would be much more worried if he raised to 400-500 then his push.
Sure you will run into AA-QQ once in a while, but his range is much wider then you presented.

You should be concerned to some extend with the callers behind you, if one of them is either slowplaying AA-QQ or decides to join in with AK/AQ you are still fine from pot odds point of view, but have less then 50% chance of surviving this hand.

All and all I call this.

Very interesting thread - thanks Taipan. My thoughts were the same as you first : QQ is ifcourse a call TT is a fold but JJ? With 1500 chips I would let this go no problem but ofcause the chipstacks makes me desperate. Looking back on it, and reflecting of this thread I call next time, but with a few more chips - say around 1000 I would again struggle to call.
