Default $16 SNG Stars - HH Trimmed - last one for a while ;-)

    Guys,

I finally made ITM in a $16 SNG (after 7 attempts ). Here is the hand history. I think overall I played it well but I would appreciate your comments!

BTW, it'll be the last HH for a while, I don't want to bother you guys too much

    Thanks!

I'll have a more detailed look later, but your HU play doesn't look good to me. You are limping far too much when you should be pushing, particularly with blinds at 400/800 and 600/1200.
  3. #3
Anything I don't comment on is fine.

    2. TT - I would check-raise with your overpair. Make it like 160 to go once he c-bets. On the turn, I would still flat call, I doubt that the Q helped him.

    3. QTs - I just fold this preflop, even from the button. QT is just too easily dominated by hands that those players in front might limp so has bad reverse implied odds.

    4. JTs - again, just fold this preflop. If there was another limper I might limp but I don't think you've got implied odds to limp here. BTW make a note on korpornikus that he raises HUGE with a hand with limpers in front.

    6. AA - keep the sizes of your open raises consistent regardless of your hand. Observant opps (which is not always the case at a $16) will notice if you vary your raise size. 120 to go again, not that it would likely have made any difference.

    8. KQo - fold preflop. KQ is too easily dominated to call raises with. As played it is obv fine, but I have lost stacks and stacks of chips with KQ with a K or Q on the flop.

    9. 66 - I would just open shove this. You're not folding if either player pushes over so just get 'em all-in.

    11. T3o - good.

    [4d 9d] SB (M=4.31; f+f+f+f+f+f+F) - definite shove

    15. Q9o - this isn't a good shove, I don't hate your raise but realise that since both SB and BB have you outstacked, they might be liable to shove over with a wide range knowing you can't call unless you have a monster. I think I just fold this though.

    16. 32o - shove or fold. I think I just fold this as 32o has very poor postflop value. You burned 600 chips here for nothing, 600 chips that are very precious at this point in the tourney.

[7d 5c] BU (M=2.81; f+F) - this one is likely to be a shove, but can't quite tell depending on stack sizes

    22. Q7s - I think I just shove this given the blind sizes. That said, you probably extracted more chips with your line. As you played preflop I would probably prefer to make a real raise to say 1800 on the flop rather than just minraising - if he's chasing the flush he has odds to call your raise.

    23. J4o - I would take a stab on the turn after opp checks twice.

    24. A4o - just open shove this rather than minraising. Shove over his re-raise.

    26. J5o - OK, now that he has shoved over when you complete the SB, don't complete any more. Shove or fold.

    27. A3s - shove over for sure with blinds at 400/800.

    31. T7s - just shove preflop.

    34. TT - just shove preflop. The beauty about shoving lots of hands is that sooner or later opp gets tired of your shoving and calls! That's why I would shove with AA in this spot.

    35. 72o - unlucky.

    36. KJo - just shove preflop.

    37. T3o - with blinds so huge just shove preflop. Opp needs to call you with 55% of hands (22+,A2+,K2+,Q2+,J7o+,J3s+,T8o+,T6s+,97s+) for this to be -EV.

    39. K7o - just shove preflop.

    40. K3o - I think this is fine, he needs to be shoving wider than 44% (22+,A2+,K2+,Q7o+,Q3s+,J9o+,J7s+,T8s+) for this to be +EV and I think by this stage he would be.

To my defence, opp was tight and I wouldn't have gained a lot in moving all-in all the time, I prefered to try and outplay him up to 400/800 blinds. However, I agree with you than when reaching 600/1200 I should have moved all-in more often.

Sorry Jimmy, I didn't mean to be harsh, at the end of the day you were at the table and you know opp much better than any of us from having seen him play, so the ultimate judgement rests with you

The check-raise would be a nice option also. I do not use it a lot. I have to improve that!

Actually, here I was getting 6.5-1 odds and I think QTs would be worht due to the straight and flush possibilities, no?

Here I agree, I was not getting the needs odds to call ...

The difference was that I was in late position and the QQ hand I was UTG ...

As I said, in this hand I wanted to do a 'stop n go', and KQ is a good hand to do it. Am I wrong?

Good point! But I wanted to make it look stronger. But maybe at this level its not worth it?

On the $16 SNG I still have a trouble to push ATC in SB. I have to work on that!

I see your point, but korponikus and orrev where playing tight and I need the chips. Furthermore, in 2 hands my stack would go to 2450.

I agree! This was a poor call. I should have folded this!

I don't understand how this can be a shove and the Q9o (i.e. hand 15) be a fold ... even if orrev has a smaller stack ...

I agree that if he's chasing the flush he has odds to call, but heads up it's more like playing the opponent (the chances of him playing for the flush are very small). With my min-raise I wanted for him so see it as a bluff as top pair heads up is a very good hand!

A stab at the turn would be seen like stealing the pot while at the river it's more seen like someone slow playing trip Q.

Maybe I should have shoved over his re-raise, but opp seemed tight and he never re-raised pre-flop so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. The next re-raise I would shove it over if I hold any K or A or any PP.

You are right, but I would not shove with J5o as my hand is more likely to be dominated ...

Here I was slow playing to get opps stack if an I hit an A and opps doesn't have it.

The problem with this approach is that Big hands do not come often. Heads up you'll get a PP once every 8 hands in average. I wanted to slow play this for him to push over for me to win.

In general, I think my strategy heads up was good up to 400/800 blinds, where I should have push a lot more pre-flop.

    Thanks for the comments![/b]

Eh I don't think that limping is terrible, just that I wouldn't do it. Provided that you are playing for better than just a Q or T high flop I think it is OK (ie. don't go broke if the flop comes Q83 rainbow).

The difference was that I was in late position and the QQ hand I was UTG ...
I would still make it 120 to go with both hands. Minor point though.

Stop 'n' go is overvalued at low buyin SNGs IMO, I have lots stacks of chips with this move since a lot of these donks will call you with middle pair on the flop. I have learned to use this only very sparingly.

Good point! But I wanted to make it look stronger. But maybe at this level its not worth it?
It's not worth it. Apart from being called and doubling up, stealing the blinds is a good oucome here, so you want to maximise your preflop fold equity.

I see your point, but korponikus and orrev where playing tight and I need the chips. Furthermore, in 2 hands my stack would go to 2450.
With your read then I think this is OK. Can be expensive when it goes wrong though, then you'll be really shortstacked...

I don't understand how this can be a shove and the Q9o (i.e. hand 15) be a fold ... even if orrev has a smaller stack ...
Because you are shorter stacked! Post the whole hand and I'll run it through SNGPT if you don't have it (if you don't, then get it )

I agree that if he's chasing the flush he has odds to call, but heads up it's more like playing the opponent (the chances of him playing for the flush are very small). With my min-raise I wanted for him so see it as a bluff as top pair heads up is a very good hand!
Agreed, again this is very read dependent and you were the one there.

Usually the worst you will be is 40/60 IF you're called - and opp isn't quite short enough that he's calling you with any two cards.

Here I was slow playing to get opps stack if an I hit an A and opps doesn't have it.
I would just shove. I want those 1300 chips in the pot preflop! You only hit the A about 18% (I think) of the time on the flop so I would not just flat call for that chance.

The problem with this approach is that Big hands do not come often. Heads up you'll get a PP once every 8 hands in average. I wanted to slow play this for him to push over for me to win.
I would still just push. Overcards to TT come very often, why let him outdraw you with K5o if a K comes on the flop?

Again, it is very read dependent on opp so only you can make the judgement as to whether this is the case!

Yup, I would never go broke with QTo, that's something I've learned lately

I agree, lately I've used it only once in a while (not even once every SNG) and against the right opponent (someone who is tight and tries to steal the pot from late position).

I agree that I could have be shortstacked if it went wrong. Anyway I would be folding to a re-raise without hesitation
However, in a SNG when you can not have nice hands, you have to try to steal some pots when you think it's the write time otherwise you'll be blinded out.

I don't have it here, I'll try to fetch later. I only have SNG Wiz, not yet SNGPT

If opp was aggressive I would have shoved it, but I thought I could extract a bit more if I hit the flop (which is about 33% of the time).

I didn't want to risk that many chips with such a bad hand.

I guess you might be right here, 1300 chips it's not bad, however, A3 is a very good hand and if the blinds are not too high I prefer to play post flop and extract more money from opp.

For the same reasons as above, there is a 40% prob that not overcard to mine come on the board and even if it comes it's not garanteed that it will pair opp. Furthermore, if a T comes I'll will the Heads up if he pair his K or any over card.
The trouble with shoving these hands is that you'll be called (as least with this tight opp I had) by hands like AK/AQ/AJ/AT or high pocket pairs, where generally you'll be an underdog. By just calling you'll have the possibility of opp pairing a smaller card that a T and allowing me to win.

Of course this is OK if blinds are not too big, but as blinds goes up, all-in becomes much more the only option.
