Mid tourney Aggression

[Crazy Scot]

My tourney stats have went from 18 1st place, 4 2nd places, 13 3rd places to
19-15-13. I really think that I am not getting enough value out of the middle of the tourney. I play very tight early on and pick my spots to build a stack. Then with 4-5 players left I usually have top 2 stacks, but I seem to get very passive and by the time it gets HU the other player has a equal to larger stack size. I feel I am missing oportunities to keep building my stack mid game. Below is a recent example, played tight through the first few levels, built a large stack, went passive, let the field catch up, then lost it at the end on a bad beat. If I had played the middle better I feel I would have been done before it got to that point.

Would you call and get it allin on the turn? A push probably only called by a hand that beats me eh? All though if a club falls on the turn then what? Bet and fold to a reraise?

This is pretty good overall, general comments:
- Once blinds hit 50/100, NO open limping. If you're not happy raising a hand at this blind level and up you should just dump it.
- Your bet sizing is generally OK but you want to bet a bit more on the flop with vulnerable hands like top and bottom pair and overpairs.

1. AA - Preflop and flop are fine, you could make it 200 preflop but meh. On the turn, I'd raise his donkbet up to 550 and put him all in on the river. I don't have a major problem with the way you played it though. I would have liked to try to get the rest of opp's 690 chips though.

2. A4o - fine. I don't want to play this OOP.

3. J9o - fine. Re-raising would likely be spewing chips particularly since redeye hadn't really been out of line.

4. K3s - Personally I wouldn't steal here, particularly since the SB has a stack that can hurt you, but if you had a read that the 3 players still to act were tight I might give it a stab. Probably just fold though.

5. A6o - just let it go. There are 4 players you need to go through before you have the blinds - more importantly, two who have position on you if you're called.

6. J8o - you played it fine. I'm pretty surprised that you weren't called given opp's big overbet on the flop. I shove this 100% of the time. As you say, if you just call the flop and a third comes on the turn you're in a tough spot.

7. K8s - with your stack, yes I would raise K8s from the button. With the big stack it's time to put pressure on your opps and if called you've got postflop position.

8. A5s - I'd dump it from UTG.

9. 62o - fine.

10. JTo - once blinds hit 50/100 I am pretty much never limping (unless I'm trapping with AA or KK against a known very aggressive opp). I'd dump this from UTG. As played, your flop bet is fine.

11. K8o - yes, with the big stack I'd raise this.

12. JTo - you played it fine. I might make it 500 to go preflop but even then you'd have to call the shortstack push.

13. A2o - you played this fine. I would have raised it if the SB hadn't called though.

14. Q8o - definitely raise it from the button with the short stack around. The BB won't mess with you without a hand.

15. 84o - perfect.

16. QTo - DEFINITELY raise it preflop, no limping at this blind level! As played, fold to the push, you don't have odds to call this since you'd expect opp to have a decent hand considering the stack sizes.

17. J7o - you played this fine, but why are you raising this and not the QTo hand (16)?

18. A3o - fine

19. J5s - take a stab on the turn after opp checks behind on the flop. Raising preflop would have been fine too.

20. J2o - Preflop is fine. I would bet more on the flop, particularly with the flush draw out there. Top and bottom pair is a hand vulnerable to counterfeiting, it's not a terrible thing to end it on the flop so I'd make it 1100 or so to go. On the turn, you played it fine. You absolutely have to call the push. Why are you worried about this if you figured opp for a J or a flush draw, if you think he has this you should be delighted to get your chips in. Unlucky on the river, nh.
