Default Bad to push when its folded to you in sb ?

A situation that has come up a couple of times recently is pushing from the sb. Today i made i final table and was something like 7 of 9 a couple of hands in with a M of around 4.5 everyone folds around to me on the sb where i find 94o so i push reasoning that i cant be called by the BB who had a M of aroun 16 unless he picks up at least A high, so he thinks a while and calls with J8o, wtf that isnt even a favourite against a random hand, i hit a 4 but it isnt enough and im eliminated cursing the gods and the idiot player that called me....

So was this a correct push and should you push any two when its folded to you on button or sb when you are getting short stacked?

Even if you're sitting with that small of an M-ratio, you still have life. You're all-in on any hand you play. You did that right. However, even if you lose that small blind, it won't change your effective stack that much. After the small blind, you still have the opportunity to take the blinds, and the opportunity to see your cards for free for 7 hands. You are going to find a better hand than 94o in that time. It doesn't have to be great, just better.

I'm not saying you made the wrong play, I think that maybe you jumped the gun a bit. Unless you have this player as pretty weaktight, or your table image is extremely tight, I fold SB here.

These comments are the opinion of the poster.

The point with the push isnt that i think 94o is the best hand in the world but because of the information given to me by the other players by the 7 folds to me, because of this my hand has increased alot in value, the bb shouldnt under any circumstances call with J8o because he has to little information to make an informed decision, the only think he can do is regard it as a random hand, which J8o isnt even a favourite against...

This is one of those plays that's read dependent -- is your player the type of player that will call with J8o, if he is then no you can't push 94. If he will only call w/A high then its a clear push. Have you been consistently raising his blind when you are in the small and he is in the big?? If so, then he is probably ready to make a stand vs you with any two. If not then he can probably give you credit for a hand. I am not a huge fan of pushing into big stacks, I'd rather push into another medium stack here if possible. I think without reads I'm more likely to fold and push at a better spot (or with a hand with some showdown value). Your M is almost 5 -- which means you can probably get something with better showdown value than 94.

He has a big stack he can afford to call and lose. Pushing into mid stacks who can't afford to lose is a better move as they need good cards to call. At worst he becomes a mid stack and he can call as long as he thinks you are pushing very wide which you probably are.

That is the trouble with getting down to 4.5bb he calls 4bb to win 6bb.

Yeah you are in any two mode but as has been said your at the end of the orbit and have th button next.

I always look at my position in the orbit before pushing to see how many more hands I get for free. You can't get too picky but should at least be comfortable with the two you shove if you have the time to wait a little

I too hate the "wtf I have a big stack I can afford to call" guys. Harrington's rule I believe is 10 to 1 to call with any two against a short stack. A lot of big stacks don't follow that rule.

I also hate it when I have a low to mid stack and some big stacks double up the shorties by calling with crap and dropping me down putting me in a more desperate playing style.

    Fun game this poker....LOL.....

Is BB a loose all in caller? If yes, then you probably shouldn't push and hope that you have a better hand when folded to you the next hand on the BU. You don't have much FE so you may need to be somewhat selective.

As a side note, one thing I have noticed is most players at 10 and under are reluctant to push any two and will often have decent hands waiting on pp's, 2 paint or a A high kicker,

I have been surprised calling these shorties more often than not lately figuring " he's short" and playing any two only to find AJ,AQ etc.

I think this is fine unless you know the guy is calling very wide. If it's folded to my SB and I have less than 10BB or so I pretty much push any two.

If you have a copy of NLHET&P the chapter on the Sklansky-Chubukov rankings is an interesting read and applies here.

odds are your small stack will pick up a better random hand in the 7 dealt the next go around, which is where your spot to push should be. especially considering the guy's stack size, i'd fold and wait for a hand with more value.
