Default Tourney for review

My downstreak is ended. I got 3 thirds in a row, a loss and then a win.

Heres my latest one with comments. Btw, I put comments in as I think it might be interesting for newer players to read, but also so that experienced reviewers get a glimpse of my thought process. If you think my thinking is off on a situation, comment on that too, not just the hands please.

The Tournament Trimmer (v1.1.2w) was developed by JeffreyGB at http://www.FlopTurnRiver.com.

---Tournament Summary---
$5.50 SNG: Finished 1/9 for $22.50
Data for 109 hands.
You played 40 hands (36.70%)
You raised 19 times preflop (17.43%)

3 K CO-1 (M = 50.00; f+f+c+f+F)
2 5 MP2 (M = 50.00; f+f+f+F)
3 7 MP1 (M = 50.00; f+c+F)
K T UTG+1 (M = 50.00; f+F)
9 7 UTG (M = 50.00; F)
2 3 BB (M = 50.00; f+f+f+f+f+r+f+c+F)
7 5 SB (M = 49.33; f+f+f+r+c+f+f+F)

I got my AA ai PF, hard to get it wrong that way. Pity they'd both donked some chips off already so I couldnt triple up off them. Bad play by Raller, calling my raise put half his chips in, once the push came from behind he almost had to call with a marginal hand. He should have folded, but next best option was to push himself and hope to fold fat-johnny and maybe even myself.

Shouldnt have played this. Interesting note at this point, noone was raising properly in this game. I saw maybe 5 raises for the game from other people that werent a min-raise. Made it confusing to put people on ranges

I thought about reraising this. I've called one or two min-raises, wouldnt mind reraising one to make a point, but still dont have ranges for what people are doing it with. Flop is good for anything except a bigger overpair or A5, and I dont want any overcards to hit on turn so take it down.

I called this hoping to get a look at what theriver is min-raising with, but BB comes along also. Middle pair, but too much chance one of them has K so c/f.

Still ambivalent about this one. Whilst lilluu is shortstack, she's been tight as can be since getting that way, so the raise was to isolate her with a decent hand, but maybe I should have read her as having a better one. With my stack does that matter? Dunno, might be being results oriented.

Ok, this hand pays off. I get some chips, and also get to lookup a minraise from theriver. He had pocket Qs. So I can probably put his min-raises as strength, although he may just min-raise all hands. I'll treat with caution anyway.

This was dumb, and the kind of mistake that costs me games. I'm either way ahead or way behind here, so pushing is just dumb. PSB would have achieved the same result if ahead and left me with a decent stack if behind.

I should have c-bet this. For some reason I've stopped c-betting as much, thats something I need to address. With a limper my PF bet should probably have been 600 instead. llallaloubna is a bit of a calling station PF.

I'm trying to work this into my game a bit. On a flop where someone either hit huge or missed, I figure most people wont call a bet if they missed. Vulnerable to slowplay obviously, but I think its +EV longterm

Man, this is the first hand I've slowplayed for ages. Should have bet with the flush draw through, once the other club hit on the turn I had to bet action or not.

Interesting river action. In hindsight I think I should have flat called the push instead of pushing over. My hope was to get llallaloubna AI as well, but if I'd just called maybe she would have called as well, or pushed over. Not sure what works best here. Thoughts?

I do like it when people slowplay when they're ahead and let me draw out

Interested to hear thoughts on this hand. I dont limp often, but sometimes do to mix things up. Calling the raise is as much to show she cant steal if I do limp, as it is because I only have to call 400 into an 850 pot. She leads out, that could be a c-bet or hitting any pair. I have top pair and a gutshot draw. I REALLY dont want any overcards to hit on the turn, so I push. I'm just not sure if thats a good move here or not. She could have AT, she could have an overpair, or she could easily have either a draw or lower pair either pocket or on the board.

Overall comments:
- I still think your preflop hand selection is still too loose. Don't limp marginal hands like KQo UTG or QJo from the button, and DON'T call raises from the blinds with crap like K9o and A6o.
- I think you need to pay a bit more attention to stack sizes when making preflop decisions - watch the stack sizes of players raising and players still to act.

2. KQo - you're right - dump it preflop from UTG. Once you limp though, folding would be a mistake.

4. KQs - I would raise it every time here rather than limp when it's folded to you in the SB and you have the big stack.

5. K9o - OMG instafold this to an UTG raise! Whilst it's true that on a table of donkeys you might not always be up against AK, you're behind his range and you're playing this OOP for the rest of the hand.

7. QJo - fold this, even from the button. Note that the limper in front is the second stack - you've got serious reverse implied odds even if you hit a Q or J on the flop.

8. JJ - nh.

9. K3o - I'd shove it back in his face. He won't call you without a monster hand and even if he does call and you lose, you can take the hit with your stack. As played, bet either the turn or the river, I don't understand why you didn't at least bet the river after he showed no strength on any street.

10. T3o - standard.

12. TT - I think flat calling here is fine. Given the minraiser has 2500 chips, you have implied odds to play for set value by just flat calling the raise, and your hand has some overpair value too. Flop lead is fine too, if he shoves it you have to toss it though.

13. A9o - as per Hand 5, I am instafolding this from the SB. BB is getting 5:1 on the call so will mostly come along, so you'll be playing this OOP against 3 opps. Even if the flop comes A or 9 high, you can't be sure that your hand is good and you have to act first on every street. By calling this raise, ask yourself what flop you'd like to hit to get all your chips in on? If you're hoping for two pair, trips or better realise that you only hit this about 3-4% of the time (since you can't make a straight on the flop). You just don't have the implied odds to call off 225 chips here.

14. A6o - dump it, firstly because of your read that the short stack is tight (why would she just limp more than 1/4 of her stack rather than shoving it) and also because of the risk that one of the two remaining players wakes up with a hand. Remember they can hurt you! If you were in the BB and everybody else folded I can see a case for putting the short stack AI with A6o though.

15. A6s - OMG OMG super presto instafold this! You're ASKING to be dominated here by calling raises from OOP with that crap. If opp had bet 500 on the river you would have had to make a crying call and would likely pay off A6+.

Rest later.

Thankyou. I think I might have a problem where I dont like my blinds being stolen too much, this game was especially annoying as they were doing it with min-raises. I just need to keep the emotions under control though and ignore it unless I have a good/premium hand?

Hand 9: I didnt bet the river as I figured there was very little chance she'd call with any hand I beat. Maybe theres enough chance to do it though.

Thanks again, interested in reading your review on the rest. I'll definately try to work on my PF calling hand selection.

The other thing I meant to say on Hand 15 was that you're calling a raise by a stack that can hurt you.

16. QQ - agree that a PSB on the flop would be better but you're probably never folding on this flop even if he C/R all in.

19. ATs - I actually make it 800 preflop with the limper, and as played I agree, c-bet that flop, it's unlikely that it hit opps' hands and it's pretty draw free.

5 K BU (M = 10.67; f+f+F) - I'd raise this one from the button with the short stack in the BB.

20. J7s - I think this is fine, good way to pick up some small pots without much risk. I bet 300 on the flop but meh.

21. 54s - perfect. Don't slowplay bottom two pair, it's too easily counterfeited.

23. J3s - I don't mind slowplaying in this spot but I do lean towards betting particularly if opps are calling stations.

24. 54s - raise him back from the BB once in a while, I see you let him limp in cheap quite often.

25. 99 - nh.

26. K8o - this is a bit weaksauce for me. Firstly with the antes I make it 600 to go preflop and I definitely c-bet that flop for 800. As played, I don't think I fold to a minbet here - I think he's taking a cheap stab at the pot with nothing. I raise him up to 1000 here and watch him fold.

27. T8o - I think you played this perfectly. I think you get called often enough to make this +EV. Nothing wrong with shoving the nuts here. I think that if llallaoubna has something that she will call a shortstack push and your cold call with, they will call a push and repush.

6 9 SB (M = 18.59; F) - I'd raise this HU

29. T9o - played perfectly on all streets. nh!

30. Q2o - I tend to bet the turn after opp checks behind.

3 J SB (M = 23.16; F) - I'd raise this, I like to keep the heat on my opps HU.

32. Q2o - fine, nh.

6 4 SB (M = 23.01; F) - I'd at least call here if opp doesn't raise you back every time you just limp.

37. 55 - I think this is fine since the flop came with only one (low) over. The alternative is to just shove this preflop.

39. 74s - I would check-raise in this spot, probably to 1200. You want to either get your money in with your flush draw or win it on the flop. As played, I think you have to check/call the turn. WHY OH WHY did you check the river??? If opp has a bigger flush or full house I pay him off. You hit your hand that you've been chasing on the flop and turn, and now you just check? This is losing a LOT of value. I bet at least 1/2 pot or 1600 here.

Hmm, what I find interesting here is that most issues are from earlier on, which I think highlights one of my problems. I'm getting 3rd a LOT (I've made it ITM 7 out of last 8 games and had 5 3rds). Part of the problem is I'm almost always shortstacked by the time I get ITM, and its these little problems (little in terms of chips per mistake) that are bleeding me down at a time I should be building up.

I think I'm actually too passive postflop, and as you mentioned, too loose PF with my calls. My last tourney I tightened right up on that, so hopefully I can keep that up.

One thing I run into a lot is I (correctly) dont raise with marginal hands from EP shorthanded, but it seems like round after round when I'm in LP someones entering the pot in front of me. Sometimes those are limper(s). I've been too passive to raise them up without a truly premium hand, should I look to do that sometimes anyway? What about when its always someone raising? Do I just watch my stack dwindle until I catch the right hand? Any thoughts?

One double-up ITM can put you back in the game. The key thing is not to bleed off chips early which cost you in a couple of ways:
- You lose fold equity with a smaller stack
- The 100-150 chips you bleed off early can cost you 200-300 or even more if you find a double up spot later on with a shorter stack.

Agreed, you need to be c-betting 80-90% of flops where you raise preflop and miss the flop. The only flops I tend to avoid c-betting are those which come super co-ordinated, A high or with 2+ broadway cards.

Do I just watch my stack dwindle until I catch the right hand? Any thoughts?
This is read dependent. If they are limp/folders then you can raise pretty much anything you'd open raise with. If they are limp/callers (which $5.50 players tend to be) then unfortunately you need a stronger hand than you'd need to open raise with. You probably alreadyknow this, but it is is Sklansky's gap theory.

Yeah, I know it, its just frustrating when I see say a 3000 chips stack dwindle to 2100 after a few rounds of not having a good steal opportunity. I tend to stay tight on the assumption that they're limp/callers, which is partly why I'm surviving to make the money so often, but also why I'm short when I get there. Those frustrations are whats been causing the loose calling though. The choice should really be raise or fold.

I dont mind harsh comments, unless someones a true d*** I just take the advice as constructive and try to learn from it. Appreciate you taking the time to do these reviews and answer my questions.
Just dipping my toes back in.
