Default Upping aggression - Tourney review (1st $6.50 win)

I identified two things I've let slip in my game. I became too loose, but I also became too passive. I've addressed the loose issue already (I think, let me know if you disagree), but I tried to work on my aggression in this one. I managed to get a bit of a stack up towards the end, so tried to work some big stack aggression in as well. Let me know what you think.

Oh, after railing Taipan and FlyingSaucy in some turbo's I thought they might suit so played some today. I came 2nd in my first one, didnt place in the next two then got a 2nd and now this 1st. I enjoy them and think they suit me, but obviously I could just be catching the right end of variance here (although losing those 2 with my KK being beaten by AK AI pf, and my AK v's A8o AI on an ace high flop losing to runner, runner flush makes an argument that variance isnt all my way )..

So this is also my first $6.50 win, I'm happy .

Check out Mr Slowplay. I love these guys. I probably win more chips off slowplayers than I do other donks. I get so many big pots off them, because after they've slowplayed, they just cant accept they're not still winning.

I nearly folded this flop to the raise, called it because firedog did as well.

I was about 1/3 each to fold, call or push this. Called because firedogs stack was almost big enough to justify set odds, and I didnt want to risk all my chips when I could find myself dominated or flipping. Easy fold to the raise and call though. Should I have just folded right off?

I think this was bad from either angle. Either I was ahead and possibly a small bet to either extract some value or get a push over might have been better, or I was behind and just gave them my stack.

Well done on the win! Turbos are like crack cocaine, once you start playing them you'll never stop! Seriously though, if you are good at push/fold poker (and/or suck at postflop) then turbos will play to your edge since you get to that spot faster than in normals.

Overall I think you played this pretty well - I liked your aggression and your preflop hand selection was pretty much there (apart from Hand 1 QJs limp). There were a couple of shoves that you missed but these will become instinctive over time. GG.

    1. QJs - I don't even bother limping here, too early position. Basically the only time I play SCs are if it's folded to me on the button (in which case I'll open raise) or if I'm in late position and there are 2+ limpers in front. QJs is basically just a big SC to me - actually, if you're playing more 2 pair+ it's actually a bit worse than T9s because it can't make as many straights.

    A T UTG+1 (M = 31.78; c+F) - good fold, I don't bother with this from early position.

    A 6 BU (M = 19.40; f+f+f+f+F) - I'd open raise this one, make it 150 to go.

    5. K2s - played fine. Don't fold to the flop bet, you close the action (so nobody can raise), you're getting 5.5 to 1 to peel off another card not to mention your implied odds of hitting the flush which are huge.

    6. 77 - this is a bit of a tough spot, mainly because there are three players still to act preflop. I don't mind your play, but with your stack I might have made it 450 to go since you likely have postflop position. I definitely wouldn't shove this, particularly because if riverchild wakes up with a hand and calls you, you donk off your 2nd biggest stack for nothing. Folding wouldn't be terrible either but probably a bit weak for my taste.

    8. Q6s - obv fine. Just an observation that at a $27 or $60 your button steals get shoved over a LOT more.

    9. AKs - With 13x BB and with the antes I'd just open shove it rather than standard raising. If you're called, miss the flop, c-bet and get called or shoved over you'll be pretty short.

    10. QJo - yes, the push was a bit much here. I'd make it like 600-750 to go on the river. I would be very surprised if you were beat here if opp called.

    12. 65o - nh, perfect.

5 K SB (M = 9.61; f+f+F) - super easy shove. Put the BB AI. You have a good hand HU, you have the big stack, BB has <10x BB and it's the bubble. Run this through SNGWiz, it will say to shove ATC here.

    13. K3o - good. Apply PRESSURE to your opps on the bubble with the big stack!

    14. T6o - just shove it. Standard raising then folding to a shove might actually be a mistake.

Agreed, but you folded the last SB, I would have shoved this one

    19. Q7o - just shove it, you have massive fold equity with the small stack so short.

    20. K4o - meh I guess this is OK. The risk is that you get the other guy coming along for the ride but I guess if the short stack calls you're likely checking it down anyway.

    21. 82s - grrr I hate this. No choice though.

    22-24. All fine.

Well, Taipan has already commented, but I’ll add my own just for practice.

    Hand 5: Yep, poor bastard

Hand 6: I’d let this go… although with your stack it’s probably not a bad play.

Hand 10: I’m with you, probably a little reckless of a push.

Hand 12: Man, he totally messed up not raising you. Again, poor bastard.

Hand 13: Don’t think I’d make this play with an unsuited K with a crap kicker. Both the blinds need chips and would probably be happy calling you with any ace or a dominant King.

Hand 14: This guy loves giving you his blinds

Hand 15: Similar to hand 13 although their stacks have shrunk and yours have grown. I think I’d make this play but Hand 13 is still a little iffy for me.

Hand 18: Q3o – I’d fold this. Starting to think I need to get more aggressive in these spots.

Hand 21: I don’t like the stab at this pot with little room to improve on the turn.

Overall very nice. You play a little more aggressive into the blinds than I do, especially in places where I’d hate to have them call me when my raise puts them all in. Now I’ll read what Taipan has to say.

Hand 6: One comment on this. I dont know what its like at higher levels, but what I see a lot is once there are one or two limpers into a pot at these mid-late stages, its quite unusual to see a raise unless they have a monster. So I felt there was probably an 80% chance I'd see the flop limping behind another limper. That and if there was a raise, then I could confidently exit the hand because I was probably behind. With a raise and a call I felt I was definately behind.

I didnt really think about a raise. Other than the ability to c-bet if he checked (assuming he called my raise), short of hitting my set theres not many flops I'd like. Thats why I leant towards pushing instead of raising. I guess 450 chips isnt too bad to my stack and even if I dont hit I might take it down pre-flop or postflop with position, and not bleed chips if I miss.

Hand 13: Don’t think I’d make this play with an unsuited K with a crap kicker. Both the blinds need chips and would probably be happy calling you with any ace or a dominant King.
Hand 13: Big stack pressure baby . They both need chips, but are they putting the whole tourney on the line without a monster hand? This is actually a perfect spot for this play. They're not desperate enough to gamble, but they're short enough I can take the hit if they do wake up with a hand. A std raise is actually more likely to get a push-over with more marginal hands.

Hand 14: This guy loves giving you his blinds
Yes he does . That said, I'm now starting to take notice of him. If he calls or raises in the future I'm treading very warily.

Hand 15: Again, pressure. They wont call without a monster, this hand he had one. End result I'm still big stack, and I had a chance to knock him out.

Hand 18: Q3o – I’d fold this. Starting to think I need to get more aggressive in these spots.
Bare in mind SB has been very passive, has only played back with a monster. BB is trying to hang in for 2nd. He's only calling with a very big hand. Great spot to keep building my stack.

Hand 21: I don’t like the stab at this pot with little room to improve on the turn.
This has nothing to do with improving on the turn, and all about whether he hit or not. I probably do this any time, but especially against someone this passive, I just dont see them calling if they havnt hit. Flat calling my flop bet and the weak turn bet may mean he missed and didnt want to let me bluff him off, but it could also scream a big hit trying to extract chips from me. I asked a question and chose to believe his answer.

Overall very nice. You play a little more aggressive into the blinds than I do, especially in places where I’d hate to have them call me when my raise puts them all in. Now I’ll read what Taipan has to say.
As mentioned, I was deliberately trying to play more aggressively here. I thought I achieved that aim until I read Taipans example tourney and Badgers $22 win. Check those out for aggression!! I still have a ways to go .
