Heads Up Headache

    Default Heads Up Headache

I have been on a terrible run as of late with my heads up matches. I have recently been playing a lot of the four person ones on PokerStars. I have lost 13 of them in a row and just can't seem to break the funk I am in.

I have posted a few histories in the hopes that the experts here can pick up on some leaks in my game. People say to take a break and walk away for awhile, but I like to sit down and analyze things to try and figure out problems in my game. If you walk away and come back later, those problems will still be there and you will just face the same problems again.

Raise more, fold less. I'll look over them more carefully later but your game should improve 10x if you just do that.

Those 4 people HU matches aren't really a great bet IMO. Only one person cashes correct?
  4. #4
Yeah only one person cashes, but you only need to win 1 in 3.80 to break even, whereas you need to win 1 in 1.90 to break even in the two-person matches.

Let's say you win on average 55% of your regular matches. This is barely above the breakeven point so I think this would be easily attainable...so we will assume that percentage for the 4 person ones as well. I am using a $5 entry fee on the matches.
    2 person: 55 wins out of 100.
    Cost: $525. Winnings: 55x$10=$550. Total Profit: $25. ROI: 4.76%
4 person: 55 wins out of 100 in first round...so 55 times getting to round 2. Then 55% of those for the win...so on average 30.25 times you would win out of 100.
    Cost: $525. Winnings: 30.25x$20=$605. Total Profit: $80. ROI: 15.24%
....this is more than triple (3.2) that of the 2 person ones.

I enjoyed your use of the word 'funk'

Bloat the pot with your strong starting hands. Why are you completing/checking with AK, AQ, AJ, etc?

Umm. I think maybe if you review these yourself you'll spot plenty of issues. Pretend it was someone else playing and think how you'd respond.

Only been through the first one so far but:

Your PF limps are being reraised almost 1 in 4 times because thats all you do.

You're using a c/c flop, c/f turn approach too much and opps are spotting it to steal nice pots off you.

When you hit a decent hand you sometimes overbet it.

What would you say if you saw a new poster play this hand after completing/calling almost all game?

Hand 79, at least bet the turn, start bloating the pot at some point with a monster.

Hand 80 is horrible, I'm sure it doesnt need explaining.

    Hand 101, you deserve that.

I'm not sure, but this feels too strong HU. I've been tempering my raises since we're not trying to isolate, just to bloat the pot. This would be much better if you hadnt checked 95% of hands from the BB.

Your play feels a bit predictable, and I'd like to see more PF "poker" being played. You seem to be relying too much on winning hands at showdown. You also dont seem to be reading your opps as well as I'd expect. Notice what they do. If they pull the same move 2 or 3 times, its probably a move so the next time they do it, counter it.

Main thing though, look to be raising many more hands PF while in position and let the trusty old c-bet do its magic.
Just dipping my toes back in.

Hand 6 - I like to take a stab at the flop anytime I flop any kind of a draw even a gutshot, especially if it's a flop like that one that misses most hands

    Hand 7 - see hand 6

    Hand 11 - raise preflop

Hand 13 - fold that shit preflop

Hand 14 - you have a monster PLEASE raise preflop

Hand 17 - really bad flop check, as played call river

    Hand 18 - raise preflop

    Hand 21 - fold preflop

Hand 24 - bet flop, push river over his raise why are you just calling, it's heads up and you have a flush, you should have taken control of the SnG right here

    Hand 27 - raise preflop

    Hand 33 - raise preflop

Hand 35 - raise preflop (I see a pattern here)

Hand 37 - raise preflop, value bet the river and fold to his check-raise, top pair is usually good enough to bet on the river heads-up don't be scared of unlikely straights

Hand 38 - AT is a monster heads-up, re-raise him preflop and call a shove, if he just calls your re-raise then shove almost any flop

    Hand 40 - raise preflop

Hand 41 - fold the trash preflop

Hand 44 - this is OK but you should sometimes be taking stabs at flops like that one that miss almost every hand, if you pick up a lot of the pots where no one has anything you'll be at a big advantage but you let him take most of those pots which is a big reason why you lost

Hand 47 - this is a bad flop to slow-play, he'll call your bet with a lot of hands so bet, be more inclined to slowplay if the flop probably missed him and you want to let him catch up

Hand 48 - bet 200 on the flop

Hand 49 - meh, that turn card sucks but I'd still go broke

Hand 50 - raise preflop, as played fold turn to his re-raise, you put in more action with top pair than you did in a earlier hand when you had a flush, that's an example of you letting him control the size of the pot and him outplaying you overall

Hand 54 - shove preflop, don't let people see a free flop heads-up when you have 10BB and you have an ace

    Hand 56 - shove preflop

UScheese - Mikeneron already explained mathematically why 4 player SnG's are a great value but if you don't understand the math, think of it this way. You get to play two matches but the rake is the same as if you just played one match. If you have an edge heads-up then that edge compounds exponentially when you get to play two matches instead of one. The 4 player SnG's are some of the best value (rake-wise) that's available on PokerStars.

At what point do you think your edge counts for less in these multi-HU tourneys? Are the 16s so reliant on lucky cards that it doesnt matter?
Just dipping my toes back in.
