Default The Best Tournament I Have Played

This is seriously the most confident I have ever been in my play at one of these. There have been a couple bad hands here, but overall I am very happy with my play (Too bad I couldn't cash ). Since this is the best that I have, I figured I would post it to see if my best is actually any good. I would appreciate any feedback.

The Tournament Trimmer (v1.1.2w) was developed by JeffreyGB at http://www.FlopTurnRiver.com.

I had to call 40 into a pot of 240, giving me 6:1 odds. Also I was closing action and the stacks were deep enough where I had room to try and get a big hand.

Note*- I am not playing anything here unless I make 2pr or better.

    Question:

When my bluffs get action back (note hands 16 and 30) I feel that I played the hand horribly when I fold. Is my play actually terrible, or were they decent moves but ran into a hand?
  6. #6
Bump in hopes someone will want to go over it.
  7. #7
sorry I'm too lazy, I ignore whole HH posts.

    hand 16

I don't like the call pre flop with your stack size.

Short of super crazy read, most people will not lead this flop 4 way unless they have a hand they want to go with. If you think he is FOS, calling here and pushing any turn he checks is better. Plus you have 5 outs against Kx. Note calling also saves you money in case jlinzey is check raising.

    Hand 30

This is much tougher. It is a checkable flop for sure but c-betting is not 'wrong'. I would often check AQ/KQ here with these stack sizes to control the pot.

Then the dreaded min raise. As gross as it is you just have to give up here.

You may call thinking you have 6 outs, but often when you hit you're just getting stacked by two pair or set. When you make a 'winning' hand, the additional over sends every hand you beat packing.

I could also see just shoving over on the flop, which makes it a really tough call for anything besides a set. But most people can't fold TP at any level of tourney, let alone a $4.

A lot of the calls pre are too loose.
    Check out the new blog!!!
  9. #9
I'll take a short stab at some specific thing that stuck out to me.

One thing I did notice is that you don't fold your blinds often enough to raises... Don't play any 2 cards just because "you have pot odds"...

Also, to me it seemed like you began to get a little "I'm a big stack, so I can play looser" mentality. Be careful of this so that your hand selection doesn't suffer...Hand 16 is a tragic example of this... even though at the time you didn't even really have a big stack...

Hand 1: Fold PF. Ok, you were getting 6:1 on your call. Q7o is a HORRIBLE hand that will not connect well enough 1:6 times so that you make your money back against worse hands. You even say that you are not playing anything unless you make 2pr or better. So, how often are you flopping 2pr anyways?? (HINT: it's WAY less than 1:6)

A 8 SB(M = 48.00; f+r+c+f+c+c+f+F) What were your odds on this one? This is a better hand yet you folded it the very next hand in a similar situation. (Still a GOOD FOLD)

Hand 5: ??? Ok, so you're trying for a blind steal here?? save your chips for when the blinds are up. I'm really glad you didn't continue on the flop here...

Hand 6: PF was fine. ballzy flop bet with the PF raiser to act behind you though, what was your read on greggg? From what I can see about CazMik, he was very loose? In that case, good turn semi-bluff. A little reckless, but it worked that time...

Hand 7: Fold PF. "But, but, but, but it's only a min-raise!!!" Refer to hand 1. You have to get REALLY lucky to connect on the flop, AND then have someone willing to pay you off for this to be worthwile. If you connect even a little bit, you will likely have to make some very difficult decisions with the hand... Make it easier on yourself by just FOLDING JUNK PF. Don't try to force things to happen

Hand 8: I like the aggression here. I think you ran into a hand here...

Hand 9: Fold PF. This works fine as a LP steal. You are not in LP. and the blinds are NOTHING at this point.

Hand 11/12/13: Just fine. I like the aggression with only one or two to act. However, this is really unneccesary at these blind levels...

Hand 14: FOLD THIS CRAP! If your gonna steal his blind again then raise!

Hand 16: No... no no no. PF call is marginal. I fold this more often then not though. You just lost 250 beautiful chips when jlinzey pushes over from the BB... On the flop, do you have a reason not to respect Pythomunoz CB from UTG??? This semi-bluff could possibly work heads up, but jeez, he's making that CB with 3!!! people left to act! Get outta the way!! Your aggression was very ill-timed here... as you found out quickly!

Hand 17: Well, that was lucky!!! You were a dog to both of those callers...

Hand 19: NICE AGGRESSION!! Make those drawers pay! BUT, slow down a little on the river, make a value bet that he can call!!

Hand 20: With a limper in front, I like to have a little stronger of a hand to raise here, and I would at least raise more to about 700 or so, do you really want any of the 3 people left to act to call this? Considering Grokking's stack size and the obvious aggression, a case could be made for folding this to his min-raise. Not a terrible call though.

Hand 21: Complicated and Dangerous re-steal here. Zorain is a big stack who just pushed (looks like he won??) on the last hand. Why are you gambling with him here? I think you got really lucky that that A came on the flop allowing you to bluff. Zorain has TT+ here many times coming off a big pot from the last hand.

Hand 22: What is it? is 67 your magic hand? It's fine to get tricky some times, but try and do it when you're assured to have position!!

Hand 24: Appalling... I think you knew that your goose was cooked, but you called anyways HOPING to get lucky and bust him out. Please get out of this mentality.

Hand 25: Extreemly lucky here. Again, with a limper (the same one??) I want to raise more to ensure that I'm isolating him. With Grokking's re-raise, I'm very wary to the flop...From the look of things, Grokking doesn't know how to do anything but click the min-raise button, and obviously from what he showed down, he was a poor player. Against anyone with half a braincell though, I would fold to his flop min-raise...

Hand 28: If I was to bluff on that flop, I'd lead out to make it look like I'm protecting my hand from the flush draw. A check raise looks like a flush draw here...

Hand 29: Andrel looks really passive for the most part. Check behind on the flop looks really strong, I like that.

Hand 30: I check behind on that flop. Worse hands are folding, better hands are calling (or RAISING). FOLD TO THE RAISE??!!??!! You have to expect him to continue betting on the turn...

Hand 31: Aggressive blind defence. Bad beat. I like to call PF here though while we are still 8 handed on the table

Overall I like your agression, but I'd say your style is much more applicable to a SnG than a MTT.

Wow, I didnt expect to review nearly every hand, I might've gotten a little carried away here. I hope that you find my critique helpful!
    Hey knucklehead! Bonk!
  10. #10
Wow, thank you for reviewing it all, it helps a lot.

To begin, I thought that in the early stages of MTTs it was acceptable, even profitable, to be more Laggy because to start building a stack. That is why I called with some crappy hands (and yea, because of [what I thought was] good pot odds). Also why I raised with lower connectors and suited gappers.

Looks like mostly I need to work on getting out of a hand when opp shows aggression?

With Hand 24, I thought in HOH it said something like with 2:1 odds with an opp all in it is +EV to call with basically any two...wrong here? I should probably reread that.

Overall I like your agression, but I'd say your style is much more applicable to a SnG than a MTT.
Which is due to the fact I just started playing a few of these tournies after about a year or so playing SnG's.

I think he says "If I have some kind of hand" I want to call getting 2/1 and I always want to call getting 3/1.

This is fairly simple, run your range for him in stove and see.

The answer to that is "it depends". Poker is a situational game, and adjustments are definitely necessary based on the players you are playing with. On the whole though I would say you were playing TOO loose for most situations (unless cards were smacking you in the face, which they weren't...)

Actually, I would say you mostly need to work on your patience and hand selection. Once you do that, I wouldn't worry too much about making the "big fold". If you have a big hand, go with it

I don't have the book right in front of me, but are we sure that he is talking about MTT strategy and not cash games? Look at it this way... You "invested" 20% of your stack with 84s with a guaranteed showdown. Unless you need to do this for meta-game purposes so that no one will respect your raises (which you DON'T need) You can save yourself the extra 1295 chips to invest in a better hand. (For instance, 1295 chips in the last hand would've meant that you didn't bust out of the tourney with the bad beat)...

I usually play these $4.40 180 SnG on PS, and while I'm probably the last person that should be giving out advice, here are some thoughts:

You're too loose early on with crap hands (raising 74, suited connectors at lev2 blinds?). I like to limp in late/mid position with weaker drawing hands early on in the blind levels so I don't drain off too many chips for when things get tight around the first break if I haven't doubled up.

I basically play an entirely straight up game until I get down to under 30 BBs or so. Fold when I miss the flop, no stone cold bluffs.

People love slowplaying in these low-buyins & bluffing the flop especially in a multi-way is a recipe for draining your chips. It seems like you got lucky a few times post-flop with some well-timed bluffs, but you could have just as easily been busted out a few times if you weren't so lucky.

-Save blind stealing for when the blinds hit 50/100+, & you're in late position.

-Try to see the flop cheaper with drawing hands early on, let them go to aggression. For that matter -- I'd start trusting other's aggression more in general if I were you.

-Be wary of buffing the flop with nothing, especially in a multi-way or out of position situation. Don't eliminate it necessarily, but do it less frequently than you seem to be.

Anyone more experienced than I want to confirm/criticize my criticisms?

Harrington stated that you should call an allin with any two if the allin doesn't cost more than 1/10 of your stack. I'd say 1/12 is more acceptable. Flyswatting, IIRC.

    In general:
in the early stages, you are too loose calling raises/limping/completing the SB. Also, you try to steal the blinds in the 15/30 and 25/50 levels, which imo isn't worth the risk. the most you get out of your 'steals' are 30 or 50 chips.. which are insignificant in the long run.

Also i noticed that you tried to play back at people on the flop with air, a little too much sometimes. You really have to pick your spots more carefully as each time it didn't work it put a decent sized dent in your stack. Less bluffing, more value betting your good hands especially at these stakes.
