Easy Come, Easy Go at FTOPS Event #13
Poker players know that if you want a lot of action, Omaha is usually the game of choice. FTOPS Event #13, a PLO Rebuy Tournament, certainly went a long way toward proving this point. The action was relentless in this event all the way through to the end, with the knock outs coming a staggering pace.
Hosted by Max Pescatori, the tournament featured a prize pool of more than $300K, with first place paying $72,622. Several notable players finished in the money, including Full Tilt Pro Huckleberry Seed and TheFatFISH, a previous FTOPS champion and final tableist from Event #3.
As the final table began, the blinds were at 10K/20K and the chip counts were as follows:
Final Table Chip Count
Seat Player ID Chips
1 csimmsux 857,899
2 UghhhTILT 432,438
3 dudasdb 834,184
4 SamH133 941,453
5 HoosierAlum 188,399
6 AmsterdamAce 135,219
7 wuddacooler 194,151
8 missbosshogsir 475,089
9 Mig_com 789,168
It didn’t take long for the eliminations to start, as wuddacooler ran into a cooler of his own. Sporting a hand of Q-9-8-Q, wuddacooler called UghhhTILT’s pot-sized raise and was all-in. UghhhTILT turned over her cards, showing 4-A-A-7. Although she didn’t need it, UghhhTILT managed to turn a straight and wuddacooler was the first player sent to the rail.
Two hands later, missbosshogsir was sent back to Hazard county when her pocket Aces were trumped on the turn by csimmsux’s trip 6s. This gave csimmsux more than 1 million chips - a lot of ammo for such an aggressive player. It didn’t take long for csimmsux to take aim at his next opponent, shooting down Amsterdam Ace when his hand of 3-Q-Q-9 held up against a flush draw and overcards after the flop. Amsterdam Ace finished the tournament in seventh place.
There was no time to breathe as the next hand brought another knock out when HoosierAlum moved all-in pre-flop versus UghhhTILT. UghhhTILT showed 6-2-4-A, double-suited, while UghhhTILT held J-10-8-9 and managed to fill up a boat when the board came 9-K-10-J-10.
The pace slowed down for a moment, giving the railbirds a chance to get in on the final table action and place some side bets. At this point, csimmsux, UghhhTILT, and SamH133 all had over 1 million in chips, while dudasdb and Mig_com both had less than 600K. The blinds were now at 20K/40K.
After a moderate amount of back and forth play, things really heated up. dudasdb found himself all-in post flop with a pair of 10s versus Mig_com’s set of 9s. Unable to find another 10 on the turn or river, dudasdb was out of the event in fifth place. All four remaining players now had more than 1 million chips, and it looked like we were in for a slugfest. In reality, it would take only 10 more hands of tournament play to determine our champion.
csimmsux went on an impressive run, knocking out his final three opponents in rapid-fire succession. Mig_com was the first to go, as his two pair was rivered by the csimmsux’s straight. Four hands later, it was one-time chip leader SamH133’s turn to get shot down by the scorching csimmsux. SamH133 held a couple of ladies in his pocket and found himself with a set after the flop, but the river was once again kind to csimmsux when he made his flush. SamH133 was out in third place, but more than $34K richer.
And just like that we were at heads-up play. It wouldn’t last long. UghhhTILT had just under 1 million in chips, compared to the 3.9 million of csimmsux. Applying unrelenting pressure, csimmsux had UghhhTILT on the ropes in no time.
Four hands into heads-up play, the final clash of the night played out. After catching a pair of 8s on a flop of 3-J-8, UghhhTILT pushed all-in with a hand of 10-7-4-8. Talk about bad timing, as csimmsux flipped his cards to reveal Q-A-2-Q. The turn and river brought put another 3 and J on the board, bringing no help to UghhhTILT. There is no consolation for finishing second and missing out on an FTOPS title, but $45,607 should help a bit. Meanwhile, csimmsux rode the hot streak of lifetime to $72,662 in first-place prize money, the coveted gold jersey avatar, and the title of FTOPS Champion.
