Default **UPDATE** What would you consider cheating in SH sngs?

Ok, say you are in a sng and you see two guys who are from "istanbul". No biggie. Next you see the two not playing hands against each other (making strange folds). No biggie. Then since I was bored I look them both up on sharkscope and I see that out of the last 5 shorthanded sngs (including this one), they played in all of them together.....

I am not one to be paranoid and I am not upset that I lost this sng, but would this be worthy of an email to pokerstars to look into?

    **UPDATED at the bottom****

Definitely e-mail Stars and ask them to look into it. Stars are very good if there is a problem - they might even refund your buyin depending on what they find, and you'll definitely be doing other players and the poker economy in general a favour by getting rid of cheaters (if they are).

BTW, them not playing each other and making strange folds against each other IS a big deal.

Definitely email stars. Knowing what any opponent has is considered cheating. Not playing each other and making strange folds deserves further investigation. At worst, at least they can be monitored more closely to determine if they are making the game more in favor for them.

Yes definately. The shorthanded format probably gives the biggest edge to colluders, and though they may just be friends the fact that they didn't play a pot together sounds very suspicious. From what I've read, Stars takes all the money in their accounts, then removes the cheaters from all the tournament rankings - then pays the winners accordingly.

GL, let us know the response.

Ok, I sent the email and listed all of the tournies that i found them in. I will for sure keep this updated. They already responded and said that they will have it investigated.

Istanbul lol... I'm from Istanbul and I'm really ashamed.. and not sure how they can play at the Stars because I wanna play there too but I can't . Anyway we don't have that much cheaters in our country but that cheat is a really known cheat which even has a name so you'll probably be right..

    Definitly report

On a side note those guys are probably not that smart, if you are going to cheat at least sign in from a different city/country so the connection will not be that obvious

Couple of small updates. I sent an email yesterday, a few hours later I got this:
    Hello "buck",
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
The integrity of our games is of utmost importance to us, and when
confronted with such suspicions, we have one of our poker specialists
undertake extensive research into the players' relationships and past play.
I have forwarded your email directly to a poker specialist for review.
Please allow us some time to research this matter; it may take several days
if the matter is particularly complex. We will be back to you as soon as
possible with the results of our investigation.
Please let me know in case you need further assistance.
    Regards,

    Then tonight I got this:
    Hello "buck",

    Thank you for your email.
Based on a preliminary review of the situation you reported, I have
requested a complete review of the players involved. This will include
checking on relationships, location and play.
Depending on our findings, the players may be contacted and asked to
explain relationships and/or play. The entire process generally takes
7 to 10 days, but can be delayed if we don't receive prompt responses.
The poker specialist handling this review will contact you directly
when the review is complete or if there are unusual delays. Thank you
for your patience while we complete this process.

    reply from pokerstars:

    Hello Matt,

Thank you once again for reporting your concerns to us. Although we do
monitor the games for collusion, we always appreciate vigilant players such
as yourself reporting any strange or unusual play to us for review. I have
completed my investigation into the accounts of the players "omere55"
    and "nylonbk".

The first thing that we look for in such cases is a relationship between
the two players. In this instance, they both live in Istanbul, and they
have logged in at least once from a common computer or internet connection.

I then look for frequency of play together. I am looking to see if these
players seem to be seeking each other out. Although a high frequency of
play is not necessarily an indictment, it can be a harbinger of unethical
play. In this case, they do have an unusually high incidence of play.

With that said, the real question comes in the play of the tournaments. One
of the advantages of online poker is that there is a full record of every
hand, and after the fact, we can look through the hands with all cards face
up; as a result, cheaters cannot hide what they are doing.

I reviewed their tournament play with all cards face up, looking for any
forms of collusion. I did find that the players worked together or at least
attempted to work together in a few events. It appeared obvious that they
were sharing hole card information, stack balancing, and anything else they
could do to gain an advantage. Fortunately, they really weren't very
effective, and few events were affected.

I did find that you were affected, and as a result we have advanced you to
second place from your previous finish of fourth in T **********. You will
find a $****** credit in your account to reflect the new order of finish.

PokerStars cannot tolerate this type of malicious play, and as a result of
this report we have permanently closed these two accounts, and have banned
the players from ever playing at PokerStars again.

As you can see, we have a lot of tools at our disposal which help us keep
our games honest and fair. In addition, the thousands of honest, vigilant
players who point out situations that merit investigation are an important
part of our arsenal. Thank you for doing your part to protect the integrity
    of our games.

    Regards,

    Randy
