$5 SNG...HU with big lead

[mikeneron]

Not quite sure how I blew this one. I was trying to play pretty straight up and not take a lot of chances as I had a big lead going into HU, but wasn't able to hold onto it. I guess I should have been more aggressive in this situation, but was this more bad luck than anything else? Hand 25 was the clincher.

In general, those are pretty horrible numbers to see heads-up. You need to raise A LOT more often. The thing is, most of the time neither you nor your opponent has anything. You need to get your share of those pots. I'll post some specific hands I play different in a minute...

I got about half way through. Here's feedback on that. In general, you need to raise more, especially from the button.

Here's specific thoughts:
It makes a huge difference what kind of villain we're playing. How aggressive has he been? Is he loose or tight? Does he tend to reraise or just call? By this blind level we should have some idea about these things, which hugely impacts a lot of how we play.

Assuming "average" aggression and looseness...
Hands I don't change: 4, 10, 14, 22, 23

1: I often raise this to take it down pre (since our hand sucks post most of the time).
2: As above, I'm raising this most of the time.
3: I absolutely check that turn unless I have a read telling me I'll get paid more by him reading me as weak due to a weak bet.
5: Again, I usually raise preflop. Gives you more ways to win. About 1/4 of the time, you'll hit the flop hard enough to get it in good. Another 30%+ you can rep a high card that hit. As played, I'm betting by the time he checks the turn to me. And definitely betting the river if I don't bet the turn. I can't see him EVER having ANYTHING on the river, so I'm always betting there.
6: See 1.
7: Slowplay == teh bad. This is another reason you raise crap like 1,2,6 - you'll get action when you want it without having to get cute. Also, as played you have to bet the flop. There's definite draw danger. By checking you let him draw for free if he is drawing, ensuring that you only end up playing any significant pots here when you're likely to end up losing them.
8. This is strong enough that I usually raise preflop, esp against a tight player like tuco.
9. See 8 and 5.
11. See 1 and 7.
12. I'm rarely calling here. Tuco has not been aggro, and we won't know where we are unless we flop two pair, which will happen very rarely indeed (3% of the time).
13. I raise preflop and bet the flop before giving up. As played, I probably bet the river to rep the flush, but that's because a lot of the time I'm betting the flop with a flush draw.
15. See 8 and 5. Postflop, I like your play.
16. I either bet or check/raise the flop. He has to have a Q to call, and usually he does not have it, especially with his betting amount.
17, 18, 19. See 1.

Agreed with what others have said, but this mindset is the main reason why you lost. You need to take chances heads-up otherwise you let a decent opponent slowly whittle you down and win small pot after small pot.

Only thing I don't agree with from Jeffrey's post is raising weak hands with 12 BB because if you do raise them then you're pot c0mmitted to call a shove and that's not good. Also on Hand 16 I'd re-raise get it in pre-flop but check-fold the flop because no he doesn't need a Q to call a check-raise heads-up and that's a horrible flop for you.

Having 12 BB shouldn't make you less aggressive. The chips in the middle become that much more important - we should be raising at least as wide as we normally do.

I don't think everyone needs a Q to call HU. I think this villain does, however.
