Default my first HH - SNG $1+.20

Hi guys, i've been struggling with poker for about 5 months now, learning with play money and every time i used real money i'd die on my ass.

That was before i learned about bank roll management, so i decided to buy in again and only play low stakes.

Bank roll about $25, playing $1 games.

I've played around 250 games in all since starting, about 80 with cash. What i'm posting here is the hardest SNG i've ever played. It went on forever. I got not cards about 90% of the time and basiclaly folded and bluffed my way to 2nd place.

Please give crit where poss. My issue here is that i thought $1 games would be real loose and easy. NOT the case. Enjoy...

JJ hand: why are you betting so weak, raise it to 80 PF
    pot the flop, IMO
QK hand: bet the river, you chicken
    don't limp A9o
AQ hand: raise to 150, you have two limpers in front of you
AJs hand: why are you letting the guy check?? Raise, you nit
33 hand: why are you limping? You're in the raise or fold territory. Even if you hit your set, you're not going to be paid off enough times to justify calling here.
AQ hand: raise PF and bet more on the turn as played
K6s hand: limping the SB is extremely weak, raise him out of the pot, he has a random hand and you're ahead of his range
after you call getting 2:1, and he minraises, you're still getting 2:1, why are you folding? If it was worth calling, it's still worth calling now.
AJs hand: you checked your big bling? Tell them to get the hell out by a big raise. No limping on MY table, bitches! Even if he calls, he's calling with a hand like K9o or something stupid, you shouldn't be unhappy.

Good thing you have a cat avatar, because you play like a pussy.

ha, thanks for taking the time to go through that. I'll sit and down and look into those scenarios more thoroughly.

The reason i was playing weak then, and have been lately, was because of constantly missing the flop with my pre flop raises. So i got nervous every time i was holding AK.

The last table i came first actually and i was more aggressive when i did play a hand. I found that if you bet big and get called, you have to continue to bet hard or the donkeys will take you to the river.

It's nerve wracking but i think you either bet hard or not at all.

I guess the point is to just bet consistently rather than if you feel lucky or not?

edit: and i've just realised this isn't even half the game. Damn thing only posted the first 30 something hands.

JJ - don't ever minraise again PF. Make it 80.
As played: raise on the flop. I would make it 140
Turn and river - you have to call. You have no idea where you're at, but those are ridiculous bets. You're probably not good on the river, but you're getting 4:1. Anyway - you really shouldn't be in this situation.

I don't even limp QK... but that surely depends. Bet on the turn is so-so. Bet the river.

A9 - again, personally I fold this pf at this stage.

    Hand 5
AQ - again, make it 180 to go.
Now you're playing a bloated multi-way pot with a hand that sucks multi-way.

AQ - again, you keep getting yourself in ugly situations by min-raising.

    - a couple of good folds - the hands from the blinds are played well - just so I don't just point out the negatives

    Hand 9
    47 in the bb.
You can raise the sb limper if you want. If you make it 150 he's going to fold there more than 50% of the time, and if he doesn't you try to steal on the flop. But checking is fine.
No apparent problem with the rest of the hand.

Hand 10 - if you're going to steal, I would have done it preflop. He limped with garbage previously, so chances are he can't call. You're just giving him a chance to catch something before you try to bluff him, that's not so good.

    Hand 11
    AJ
Raise 3xBB, like you ALWAYS do when it folds to you in the SB.

    Hand 12
33 - fold preflop - you can't play this for set value - see related "set mining" threads.

    Hand 13
Raise AI preflop. I know it kind of sucks - but if you make a standard raise you'll be oop for the rest of the hand and the pot is a significant portion of you stack. If you were to raise - you push all-in on this flop. You have an openender and 2 overs - which likely translates to 14 live outs - the only hands you have to worry about are QK, QJ, QT and Q9.
As played I would consider check-raising AI. If you can peal off another card that's not so bad. If you bet it - bet more. This flop hits a limping range HARD. One of these two has to have something he can call you with here.
Bet just under the pot on the turn.
STOP IT WITH THOSE DONK MINRAISES ALREADY.
    *caugh*

    Hand 14 -
    7T
fold preflop. I call lightly in this situation, but T7 is where I draw the ine. The flop you got is pretty much as good as it gets with this hand - you see the problem.

    Hand 15 -
    You know the drill.

    Hand 16 -
    see hand 15

    HAnd 19
The one hand where a minbet would be correct!
I hope you know you're bluffing. - Not saying it's wrong... just saying.

Then it's just the same mistakes over and over again.

When you have less than 10BB, you don't call anything anymore. When it folds to you on the button or SB, or in the BB when just the small-blind completes - you can push any 2 cards, but you can't limp. - if you just fast forward 2 orbits - you should see where the problem is - you lost half your stack by limping and completing, when you could still have at least 3/4 intact.

    Hand 26
    fold preflop obviously.

    27
    all-in preflop

    30
    all-in preflop

    9Q in the small-blind as a short stack - again - easy all-in.

    You're WAY too passive.
Anyway - be more aware of position and stealing opportunities.

thanks a lot for the advice!

ok, no more limping and minraising. So are limping ranges like suited connectors?

where you say hand 15 - you know the drill... do you mean to push? even with 3 T off? later you said any two cards is good if it folds round to me. I just feel risky doing that because if the person to my left is also in push fold M zone then they're likely to wait for an opportunty to double up.

in your experience, if you're tight and when you do play you bet heavily, do people afford you some respect over time? like avoid calling because they know they'd have to take another hit on the turn etc.

    Thanks again, much appreciated.

Wonderland, you've got some excellent advice on those hands so I won't contradict what has been said.

By betting more pre-flop, you help insure position (ie last to act on the flop), and you reduce the chance someone out-flops you (less people seeing the flop). A good rule I used early on was to add one bet over the standard 3x bet for everyone who limped before you. Only time I'd limp is with a low pair or a suited Ace, or maybe suited connectors if lots are already in. Min raise only with AA or KK late in the game.

It is hard for get much good advice on your post flop play because of the situations you created by your pre-flop play. For example, a good raise pre-flop could have set up some good continuation bets post-flop, and result in you taking it down without hitting it.

You can do a lot better with your bankroll after just listening to the advice from oskar and iopq on these hands you posted.

Im opedipus bitch, the original balla.
I didn't look over the entire tourney yet, but from the few hands i saw you seem to be playing too loose in the early stages, and you are also playing too passive. You want to be playing tight, and you want to be playing aggressive.

I didn't look close enough. You're in that zone where you can't push AI, but a raise commits you - so checking is good. But in most hands you should have raised him after he limped. You've seen him complete from the SB with J6o, which means he will complete ANY hand.

later you said any two cards is good if it folds round to me. I just feel risky doing that because if the person to my left is also in push fold M zone then they're likely to wait for an opportunty to double up.
Raising and calling AI is completely different. You have fold equity - a lot of fold equity... so while it's right for you to push with TJ, but he can't profitably call anywhere near that wide, because he'll take that hand to a showdown 100% of the time. You'll just pick of the blind most of the time.

in your experience, if you're tight and when you do play you bet heavily, do people afford you some respect over time? like avoid calling because they know they'd have to take another hit on the turn etc.
During the last year I've noticed that online games in general were getting much more passive. I don't know what happened, but it's really getting tough out there... not tough in the sense of good - but players are simply not willing to put any chips in the pot unless they have a real quality hand, and it's very tiring to extract money from them... So to answer your question - most likely they are not paying attention to what you do - but most of them are in love with the fold button, so expecially in tournaments aggression can be very right.
I can't believe the number of heads-up matches I've won just by blinding the opponent down just by minraising every time on the button. Or how many sng's I see getting to the point where 5 players have less than 4M.

Only in the earliest of blind levels, and more likely pocket pairs than sc's.
I would add as an requirement that at least 2 people limped before you and you don't have either an agressive player or a minraise-every-second-hand - donk to your left. Otherwise this can get pricey.

The problem is you rarely get a solid hand with these cards, but you often get some kind of a draw. Most players - like you - raise way too little, so you'll get the odds to call, and before you know it you lost half your stack chasing some draw.
Also - you'll rarely get an optimal nut-straight draw with sc's - most of the time it's a pair an inside straight and a backdoor flush, and you have no idea whether or not you're drawing live.

cheers again for all this advice.

I have found a mixed bag so far. There'll be about 6 super tight players and a couple of players who call anything. This results in two things: you end up all in and losing your AK to their QJ or the game goes on FOREVER with everyone folding. Blinds are 100/200 and there's still 8 players left.

    Hate that.

But then i've started to say: right, if you're all gonna be tight then i'm gonna start showing some muscle. Which i now learn i should be doing regardless.

I wonder, do you find that a tight aggressie player has a win ratio of say 5/10 games but with higher winning position, like 2nds and 1sts?

Vs just tight player who makes 3rd 6 or 7 times out of 10? Just trying to get an idea on how profitable it is to be throwing chips around. I always hate being aggressive because of those times when you get called with your pants down. But if it works out more profitable then i should instead shrug off my losses because my wins will outweigh them. Thoughts?

edit: shit shit shit... just played a horrible hand that i thought was supposed to win. I raised pre flop. Donkey calls. So i bet hard. Donkey calls. So i stick in 500 chips. Donkey calls. I'm all in, donkey calls. I had nothing but they were going off Q 8 in their pocket. Paired their queen.

This aint supposed to happen!? Came last in the tourney!!

I just looked at the hand. The fucker did call my four times BB raise with Q 8 off. What hope is there of playing aggressive with people like that in the world? This is why i hate aggressive play. I had two people call the BB so i thought, here we go, bam. I had A9 suited. The donk hit his trip Q on the turn.

    1) Stop min raising.

    2) raise with AJ on SB, 5 handed ( hand 11)

    3) hand 13, why are you checking?? this is a clear push.

    4)hand 16 - fold probably.

    5) hand 17- nice.

    6) hand 20 - I think you have to call. two cards to come, and odds are OK.

    7) hand 21 - easy push, you dont have chips to mess around with here.

    8) hand 22, possible shove, Im not sure what UTGs calling range is though.

    9) hand 23, good shove.

    10) hand 24 , probably shoving.

    11) hand 25, shove.

    12) hand 26, if you're gonna play this, shove over. as played, why call raise and then check flop? Calling pre, and then firing on flop might be OK. But my play is probably to fold pre...

    13) hand 27, fold or raise, I dont like calling.

    14) hand 29, shove.

    15) hand 30- SHOVE!!!!!

    16) You need to be shoving or folding when blinds get high and your M is so low. Stop limping and completing from the SB so much. I would advise to read Sit and Go Strategy by Colin Moshman. Basically you have to get much more aggressive thoughout, and especially on the bubble. Early on you had AJ ( on blind) and AQ and folded to you- raise this! also see strategy guide in this forum. You need some work, but dont get discouraged, you havent been playing too long. Just soak up whatever you can here, and in books.
