Default This one was mine to lose... Where did I go wrong?

Once I got to be the big stack I was trying to play aggressivley and steal blinds as much as possible. MeekUS lived up to his name and did nothing even though he also had a ton of chips. Cheneypat was an absolute thorn in my side, calling almost all of my raises, so annoying. Sorry, there are a lot of hands, but maybe you could point out a couple key onnes where i went wrong.

  2. #2
I'll take a shot at this. I'm not the greatest player myself and still have a lot of things to work on, but I might be able to offer some help. If I don't comment on a hand, you can assume that I think it's generally standard (good).

Hand 3 - Sorry, but this is total spewage. For a while there, I was trying to make these same kinds of plays, and they are definitely losing at these stakes. Calling here from the big blind with KTs in this situation is pretty loose. Your only real hope is to flop two pair, a flush draw, a straight draw, or at least top pair with the T. Otherwise (and even here in the case of a T), the reverse implied odds (the chances that you think you have the best hand and are actually getting your chips in bad) are just terrible. On the flop, all you have is a gutshot and a runner-runner flush, yet you lead into the preflop raiser. Even worse, you only lead for less than 1/3 of the pot. Of course he called you... I would've just raised you right there and taken it down. Interestingly, you check behind on the turn when you probably have your greatest equity in the hand, certainly much better than what you had on the flop. Finally, the river bet is the worst. Minbetting 100 into 1100... what does this accomplish? Are you hoping to get called by AJ or AK for value? Are you hoping to fold out AT? I don't think either of these ideas makes any sense.

Hand 5 - You are getting better than 2:1 to call here, but Q7o is pretty much crap as far as showdown value is concerned. If he's shoving top 20% here, you are only 32% against that range, and you are putting nearly 10% of your stack into the pot. You definitely have to fold here.

Preflop raises - Why did you raise it to 400 once, and then later you're raising it to 450? I tend to adjust my preflop raises based on my stack size. That is, if I have to put in more than 10% of my stack on a preflop raise, I will raise for less than 3x as opposed to the standard 3x. So I like a raise to 400, especially since it allows us to steal a little more. I'm just curious why you used 400 when you had more chips, and then you changed to 450 once you had less.

Hand 8 - This was a good place to take the pot, but a minbet (only 1/2 pot) is not the way to do it. It worked here on a very dry board, but in this situation, I like a bet of at least 200. It seems strange to nitpick for a 50 chip difference, but we are talking about the difference between a minbet and a 2/3 pot bet. The latter looks a more convincing. A minbet here is just asking to be check-raised or to be called by a pair of 6s.

Hand 9 - See what a donk lead looks like from the other side? You played it well here, we're not folding to a short stack with our hand here. If he has a better A, he has a better A. Did you see his call there? Do you see why bluffing is mostly pointless at these stakes?

Hand 10 - Not horrible, but both of the blinds are pretty short stacked. You're not going to like having to call SB's shove, yet you're priced into it. If BB shoves, you can say goodbye to your 450 chips. And how do you like your hand if the big stack in the button flats you? I'm not saying that you should be super-worried about these 3 things all the time, but when you have all 3 of them working against you in this case, I think folding A3o here is better.

Hand 12 - I like it. You bluffed the flop last time, and now you're mixing it up here. The A is a good scare card to bet, and this time you bet a more convincing 2/3 pot.

Hand 13 - This is about where I really start to adjust my preflop raise sizes. We like to take the blinds, but we don't like putting 11% of our stack in the middle to do it if we don't have to. I'm not saying KJo is a pure blind steal here, but adjusting preflop raises to about 500-550 works just as well, keeps the pots smaller postflop, and saves us chips in the long run if we plan on stealing a decent amount. If we can steal 2/3 time by raising to 500 here, we are profitable. With 600, we need to be able to steal 3/4 of the time, and we are playing bigger pots postflop when called. I do tend to continue raising to the full 3x when opening from the SB because 2.5x tends to get flatted more than I'd like, and it sucks to play out of position there.

Hand 14 - Aha! This is a situation similar to hand 10, but now the case is even worse. You are getting 2.6:1 to call his all-in at this point, meaning that you only need 28% equity to call. Back in hand 5, you called with Q7o getting worse odds, but you fold K4s here? Even against a tight range of the top 10% (77+,A9s+,KTs+,QTs+,AJo+,KQo), you have 33% equity. Obviously you should have just open folded this hand, but now that you've raised it, I think you have to call his shove. You're not raising total rags preflop, but your fold here makes it look like you are.

Hand 16 - Nice hand, bad luck. I still can't figure out your preflop raises. Definitely make sure that you're not basing them on your hand strength.

Hand 17 - Checking this flop is good because the board is pretty dry. On the turn, any ace and a lot of 8s are going to call you, as well as straight and flush draws. You definitely should have bet more than 200 here... 300-400 would have put 100-200 more chips in your stack .

Hand 18 - I don't like completing these kinds of hands. I don't mind completed with suited, somewhat connected cards and leading a lot of flops, but K6o doesn't catch a flop often enough to warrant completing. If you want to take the blinds with this hand (not a bad idea), raise it up.

Hand 19 - Good hand. You're running bad. Not your fault

Hand 20 - I don't like raising this UTG. Tyhudg is in the SB and already shoved over you once to make you fold. I might like it better if we hadn't been raising so much recently, but I don't like raising it here. Be patient, just fold this one :P

Hand 21 - How many coinflips can you lose?

Hand 22 - That's better. Q6o flops about as well as K6o. If 500 works for you here, use it, but don't expect it to work very often in these blind battles.

Hand 23 - I don't like playing this hand. Suited connectors are fine when everyone has a lot of chips, but once the stacks are short, 76s loses a lot of value. That's especially true here since you are reasonably likely to be shoved over.

Hand 24 - Here you bet almost full pot with a very strong hand on a somewhat drawish board. That is fine, but in all your hands, you have never bet more than 2/3 pot when you were bluffing. This is bad. This is a huge generalization, but for a given board texture, your bet size on the flop should basically be the same regardless of what your holdings are.

Hand 25 - WOW! Sick calls. cheneypat is my hero. Question: if you had the J here, are you betting? How much? What about the 5? What about J5? What if you had an A? Do you bet the turn or the river? You need to think about these things when you're betting... what do you want your opponent to think you have, and are you betting appropriately. I don't think your line was terrible here, but again, 1/2 pot on the flop isn't all that convincing, and less than 1/2 pot on the river is apparently not enough to fold out even a Q kicker. In general, I don't bet this flop. Any pair and any flush draw probably continues, and you can expect to be check/raised a fair amount.

Hand 26 - Tilt much? I know that MEEK has been happy to fold his BB to us, but sometimes I like to fold it back with total rags so that we don't get looked up. When's the last time you folded in the SB?

Hand 27 - I'm not sure how I feel about this one. 500 is never going to be enough to make SB fold preflop, if that's what you're aiming for. It needs to be at least 600, probably closer to 700. If you're just trying to sweeten the pot with KJo, why? The raise does give you some initiative, and somehow you got away with betting at a board that doesn't really hit your range at all, except for maybe A9. If you want this to be at all believable, you need to be following this same line (preflop and on a similar board) with like 77+. Would you do that?

Hand 28 - I don't like the limp, for the reasons mentioned previously. Once we get to the flop, I don't like a bet. So many hands continue here (and especially for a 1/2 pot minbet), and a ton of cards make us not like our hand anymore. I wouldn't bluff this flop after limping, and I don't particularly like "value betting" our 5. I'd rather just check to showdown if possible. On the turn, I think we have to fold. MEEK has not even called one of our bets, and now he's playing back at us. It feels stupid to fold to a minbet, but we're beat quite often here, or we're up against a hand that will outdraw us a lot of times. All-in-all, we're in a bit of a mess, which is why we either need to fold Q5o preflop or raise it

Hand 30 - I like the checkdown. There was never really a good time to bet at this board. Then again, he called you with Q high on the river before, so maybe a small river bet would have some value (I'm mostly kidding there, of course).

Hand 31 - You can't really minraise here. Once you get below 10BB, it's basically a push/fold game. K9s isn't a terrible hand to shove with, but with MEEK being a lot shorter, I probably just fold it. As played, this actually isn't a horrible board to cbet at. I know the flush scares you, but it scares him, too, the Q is definitely in your range, the board isn't very connected otherwise, and he has checked to you. "Anyone betting here must have a strong hand," he thinks when you bet. He's certainly not continuing with a hand like K9s, and you might even actually get someone at these stakes to fold a pair of 7s with a bet here. I wouldn't count on that, though.

Hand 32 - I don't like betting here at all. There are a lot of draws that continue, he's been limping Q hands, we don't have many chips to work with, etc.

Hand 33 - All-in is your only play here.

Hand 35 - Completing 76o here (with your stack and MEEK's) is horrible. Don't do it. I see that you're trying to steal the blinds cheaply, but your play starts to get transparent when you complete and then bet at every single flop.

Hand 37 - You have to call with any two cards here provided that someone else doesn't, so good call.

Hand 38 - Completing is horrible. If you're going to call his all-in, then you need to shove. T7o is 48% against a random hand (which is what he has when it's your turn to act), so with the dead money in the pot and some very slim fold equity, I think a shove here is actually good.

It gets cut off around Hand 41, but anyways, by the time Hand 39 comes, you are the only one above 10BB. Your only play in these instances is to look for a decent hand and shove it in. There is no postflop play when the blinds are this high. Top 15% is probably a decent guideline for what you should be shoving (77+,A7s+,K9s+,QTs+,JTs,ATo+,KTo+,QJo)... widen it a bit for shorter stacks and when shoving over BB from SB. A decent range to start from for calling all-in is 88+,AJo+,ATs+,KQs. Again, adjust this based on how much the player has been shoving, what his stack size is, and how much dead money is in the pot.

I hope my comments were helpful. Hopefully a more experienced member can come along and correct any mistakes that I made.

Keep working on your game, and good luck in your next one!

If he shoves over you, do you plan on calling?
If he flat calls you and the flop comes X Y Z, what do you do?
If you check the XYZ flop and he shoves, what do you do?

I second that WOW! Really, great analysis, Doan. Is that Howard Lederer hiding behind that handle? lol

    To comment on vqc's questions:

    1. I fold
    2. I check
    3. I fold

    Personally, I'd rather shove preflop.

You are quite welcome. A lot of people have been helping me out, so this is the least I can do to return the favor. It also helps my game to look at situations that I might be in (or might have been in) from the outside, think about how I might have played them in the past, and consider how I should play them in the future.

    On the last few:

Hand 1 - A good one to shove over the BB. It's in the range I mentioned previously, and this is a perfect spot to shove over the BB with the other player having a similar amount of chips left.

Hand 2 - Also good. Shoving over a complete with this hand would be way too aggressive, in my opinion. So don't put any more money in this hand than you have to... K7 has decent showdown value anyways, so a checkdown is fine with us. You're not going to get enough limpers to fold on that flop, and that Q on the turn hits his range well (once again, as you saw). I don't think it's believable enough that we have an A, so I don't even like betting the river. I'm definitely betting a river K since so many worse hands call, and I'm checking behind on a river 7.

Hand 3 - This isn't a bad shove either. His stack is a little shorter now and we are shoving over BB from SB. You got exactly the call you wanted (you are a little ahead of KQ) but got unlucky.

Hand 4 - At this point we don't have many chips and we are in push/fold mode. We definitely still have enough to fold A3s as first to act. It's close on whether or not to shove it from the SB, but I lean towards no with our particular stack size, especially since we've just shown down A7o after a shove. My plan here is to be a little bit patient (as long I still have a 6BB+ stack) and wait for a good one to risk the rest of my chips on.

Thanks a lot for the compliment sammyfarha. I'm definitely not that good though .

Hand 3: Yeah, i think suited broadways are a leak of mine, probably cost me more than i make

Hand 8: I guess i raised it a little more because i didn't want a call, probably shouldn't do that. I usually go 3-4x raise and more if limpers, i'll also lean towards more if I have s.t. like TT or JJ where i want to be up against max 1 opp. Is this a bad idea?

Hand 8: I watched cardrunners vid where he said he minbets the flop when he hits nothing from the blinds in an unrased pot and takes it down 2/3rd's of the time. Do you think that's a bad strategy?

Hand 13: I agree with you, I guesd my idea is i just want to take the blinds, not play a pot and these guys will call very loose, so I'm trying to caharge them a lot. Does that make any sense?

Hand 24 - Here you bet almost full pot with a very strong hand on a somewhat drawish board. That is fine, but in all your hands, you have never bet more than 2/3 pot when you were bluffing. This is bad. This is a huge generalization, but for a given board texture, your bet size on the flop should basically be the same regardless of what your holdings are.

Hand 24: Ok, this is a leak i think. Basically, I want to take the pot right here because i feel committed to the KK and if an A comes I don't know if i can let it go.

Hand 27: I have no idea why i did that small raise

Hand 4 - At this point we don't have many chips and we are in push/fold mode. We definitely still have enough to fold A3s as first to act. Hand 4: I was just on tilt here.

Anyway, thanks again for all the advice. I've put it to work had over the last few days and made some better plays to hang on to my chip lead.

Okay, looking at it again, KTs isn't a horrible hand to defend your big blind with here, especially over a button raise. I just don't like the donk lead (betting into the preflop raiser from out of position) on this board. If you're trying to make a play, a check/raise would be much more convincing and might have actually made him fold. As played, you almost have to fire a second barrel on the turn since a) he's now less likely to have a Q, and if we had the Q we'd like our hand a lot better, and b) our hand is actually better now with the flush draw and the gutshot. We definitely shouldn't bet the river, I think check/calling a small bet is better but is probably still losing.

Since I am playing stronger hands from earlier positions and I don't want the entire table coming along, I have been using the following general strategy (at the indicated blind level):

1 (10/20). From 1st 3 positions I'm only playing like AQ+, 99+, and I make it 5x to go. From middle position, I'm opening a slightly wider range (like 77+, AJo+, ATs+, KQs) and making it 4x + the number of limpers. From the CO and button I'm widening even more and making it 3x + the number of limpers. 4x from the small blind. I'm not really blind stealing very much at levels 1 and 2 since they are so small anyways; I'm just folding the small blind a lot.

2 (15/30). Pretty much the same ranges, but now I'm using 4x + limpers from early and middle position, 3x + limpers from HJ, CO, and button. 4x from the small blind.

3 (25/50). Again, same ranges, but now I use 4x from the first 3 positions and 3x from everywhere else. I'm starting to widen my range in the small blind on blind steals, especially since we've folded it a few times and should get some credit.

4 (50/100). Pretty much 3x from everywhere at this point, but now is when I'm also paying close attention to stack sizes of the people behind me, and I might make it like 7x if there's a 10x stack in the big blind.

5 (75/150)+. 3x from early-middle position and from the SB, 2.5-2.75x from later positions.

So that's a general idea of how I adjust my preflop raises. I'm not saying you have to do that, but make sure that any differences in your raise sizes aren't based specifically on what cards you're holding (although indirectly they are in my case since I'm playing stronger holdings from earlier positions).

If it works, great. Obviously if a 1/2 pot bet can take a pot down 2/3 of the time, it's a winning play, so don't let my comment stop you from doing it. If you actually have a hand on a board like this, you'll also need to be minbetting in order to balance your ranges. I prefer to bet a little more with a hand, so I also bet a little more when I'm bluffing. 50 chips isn't a huge difference anyways, so this point is really minor.

These guys will call very loose no matter how much you raise it. With a hand like KJs (and a lot of the hands I play in later position), we don't often love our hand after the flop, so I'd prefer to be playing a smaller pot when we're called. Smaller pot = smaller c-bets and throwing away less chips in general.

Betting full pot is great here, I really like it. I just don't like that you never bet full pot on a similar board when you didn't have a hand. Make sure that if you decide to bet, your bet sizes are similar on similar boards regardless of your holdings. This is surely a generalization that isn't always right, but it's a good starting point.

Me neither . Isn't it frustrating when you do something and then immediately after, you're like, "Why did I do that?" As you get later in the tournament, it's even more important to slow down and carefully consider every decision you make. You should be looking at the stack sizes of everyone who is already in the hand or who is still to act, and you should be considering how they play preflop and postflop before you make your play.

Situation: You just picked up AA on the button and there is 1 limper, and the SB has a 12x stack. Almost every time the pot has been unraised in this spot, SB has gone all-in from the blinds. Maybe limping your AA isn't such a bad idea. In general it is a bad idea, but with a read like this, our expected winnings are greatly improved by limping, more than offset by the chance of someone sucking out. In case he doesn't shove, AA is still better than 60% to win against a top 40% hand (the limper), top 50% (SB complete), and a random hand (the BB), so we aren't exactly screwing ourselves with the aces.
