I think you have to be more specific as to stack sizes, how late in the tournament, is it bubble, how many places pay, etc. But if it's less than 10% of your stack and you are getting good pot odds I think it's reasonable to call with a wide range.
Also, I have been criticized by many players but if I flop a good/medium-strength hand I don't believe in checking it down unless I will somehow benefit greatly from the shortstack being eliminated.
I.E.: Final two tables of an MTT; 10 left. I have three times as many chips as anyone else at the table and I'm running them over. Shortstack goes all in for 1/10th my stack. Two people call and I have them covered easily. I have J9 in the BB and call. Flop comes 932...I'm pushing all-in.
The risk of the shortstack surviving does not outweigh the benefit of NOT breaking up the table.
