- On the same note, the big-10 gets screwed so badly on so many different fronts every bowl season. They have the longest downtime since their season ends early, and always travel south/west/southwest. Compunding this is the cold weather making it harder to practice and the rule limiting teams to 15 practices between the regular season and bowl season. And yes, I have tissues in hand.

2007-08 big 10 bowl schedule (just to prove a point):

BC 24, MSU 21 in Florida

Penn State 24, Texas A&M 17 *in Texas*

Tennessee 21, Wisconsin 17 in Florida

Michigan 41, Florida 35 *in Florida*

University of Southern California 49, Illinois 17 *in California*

Louisiana State University 38, Ohio State 24 *in Louisiana*


Of course this is an exceptionally good example, but it's a common theme that big-10 teams have the longest layoff, travel the farthest, and play an absurdly high number of de facto road games (but never any home games) in the bowl season.

USC is good, but they would have been middle pack in Big12 this year. 4th, maybe even 5th behind OK St.. USC ain't that great, and Penn St is NOTHING. They don't deserve a BCS bowl. I wish they would have gotten the Cotton Bowl against Texas Tech, and been exposed for the complete sham of a team they are.

Also bullshit. An 8 team playoff system would generate hundreds of millions. And they can still keep the boo-hoo whiney bitch bowl games no one else cares about.

I would use the current BCS ranking system to determine the top 8 teams, with one change. I would introduce is that if you are a BCS competitor, you must surrender two weeks of your schedule to be determined by the BCS selection committe for inter-conference match-ups. Florida v USC. Penn v Oklahoma, etc. It gives a better guage for determining true conference strength, and balances the whole 'strength of schedule' debate. That's always such a bubble item, IMO. It also validates claims from teams like Utah, Boise St., etc.

Not to mention, it guarantees some truely kick ass games during the regular season.

First of all, if you believe that the current BCS system is flawed when choosing the top 2 teams in the country, how can you rely on the exact same system to determine the top 8 teams in the country? Either you believe the BCS rankings are flawed or they aren't. If you believe they are flawed, then they should be done away with completely, if you believe they aren't flawed, then the current system is fine.

Secondly, the 6 BCS conferences would never agree on a system that did not guarantee that each conference would get at least one team in the playoff. If an 8 team playoff was implemented, you would have the 6 conference champions getting bids and then there would be 2 at large bids. So this year, the teams in the playoff would be Florida, Penn State, USC, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, and Oklahoma. Then you would have to choose two teams from Texas, Texas Tech, Utah, Alabama, Ohio State, Boise State, etc. Basically, you would still have the same problems as we do now.

There just is no feasible 8 team playoff system that would eliminate all the problems we have now.

Sigh..that's not the case at all. Any ranking system is flawed when it comes to determining who is really #1. Why do we even play the season? We have pre-season ranking in place every year. And every ranking system is obsolete after one week. They are subjective. They favor earlier season losses to late season losses. They factor in 'quality wins' whatever the hell that means. What they DO show is which teams are likely stronger than others, so I think it's reasonable to expect that the 'best' team in the country would be ranked somewhere within the top 8. Let these teams line up for a 3 week playoff, winner takes all.
