Actually.. kind of no. I got mine in November (so yeah, I paid more) and I expected to have to run something silly with two cables because I'd read that the DVI interface doesn't have enough data to support the native 2560x1600 resolution.

I ended up plugging the single (!) DVI cable that was provided with the monitor into the monitor and my computer and can run desktop and 3d games just fine at 2560x1600 resolution. That's the bottom line - I could speculate on how they make this work, but you won't need two cables or to use two outlets on your graphics card.

My card was an aging GeForce 7950 GX2 that's been dodgy from day one and after two months of having to run 2560x1600 in 3d games it started dropping frames and having artefacts - I'm thinking of upgrading the whole thing, but I figured I'd go out and buy a cheap GeForce 9800 GT which should tide me over for at least another year if I decide to put off the upgrade.

Anyway - a sick video card would definitely be beneficial if you want to really try to find the limits of what the monitor can do, but it's not strictly speaking necessary.

Also, consider where you want to put it. If you don't have a particularly deep desk (and I don't) the monitor is going to be very much in your face - and you'll need to actually turn your head to see what's on one side of the monitor or in the corner etc. Cool to tell stories about, but kinda distracting when trying to work with it. If you have a short distance from where your head normally is to where your monitor normally is (easy arm reach) I think going above 24" might be wasted.

It is awesome to have. And now that I got the dodgy graphics card out of the way I can take my ancient 20" Dell with a native 1600x1200 resolution, turn it 90 degrees and put it up next to the new one.

The lifetime of the CCFL (the light behind the panel) is in the range of 25000 to 50000 hours until the CCFL can only attain 1/2 original maximum brightness. If you don't operate your LCD at max brightness then these numbers should be conservative. Source

So the life expectancy of an LCD screen is quite long. Even if you use it for 12 hours a day it will still last more than 11 years. Buy that time LCDs might be obsolete and something better like OLED or even something new will be common.
