2 Table SNG Review

[TG07GT]

Hey guys, I am new to the forum and I was hoping I could get some feedback on some of the hands I played in this tournament. I have been playing poker for a few years but have only started to play online and to take it seriously the last few months after constantly dominating the poker club games at my school and home games with friends. After searching for online poker forums to join, I found that FTR looked to be the most promising. I ended up placing first this time but I feel that my play was somewhat lacking. Any constructive criticism would be appreciated. Oh, and I tagged Hellraizer as a LAG bully when the tables combined so that influenced my decision for hand 20 (I had a gut feeling he didn't have anything). Thanks.

Well, as we always say here, results don't matter but DECISIONS do - so OP did exactly the right thing by posting the tourney for comments to see where he could have made better/different decisions.

Eg. if you call an all-in with 72o the first hand of the tourney against somebody who showed you AA and happen to suck out by hitting a 777 flop, you made a horrible decision despite the result.

Tai is right. I just glanced at the first few hands and there is definitely room for improvement (as there is with all of us). However, I will say that it has been a while since I have played SNG's and there are some pretty close spots here so it would be good if Tai or one of the other SNG regs's would review this as well.


Hand 1 - Wow, you start off with a tough decision and I really want Tai or some of the other regs to weigh in on this one as I may be a tad off here.

At this stage in the tourney I think this is a fold pre-flop as you have no idea what villain's 3bet range is and you are not getting enough odds to set hunt OOP. As played I DEFINITELY don't like the bet on the flop for the following reasons. First, you are betting into the 3bettor; and secondly you aren't going to fold out any hand with a Q or most flush draws. If you think about relative position you will see that a check here makes perfect sense as you get to see if a) the original 3bettor c-bets and b) how the players behind you react to that c-bet. At least you shut down after that.

Hand 2 - I love that you led out on the flop here. Well played hand.

Hand 3 - WOOT WOOT!!!

Hand 4 - Notice short stacks before betting. I would have raised here 250 instead of 200 JUST BECAUSE that was how big the BB's stack was.

Hand 6 - If you are going to play this hand raise pre flop. As played I can see the call on the flop, but once villain bets on the turn just let it go. The call on the river is even worse. What hands that you beat is he betting with here besides pure air?

Hand 7 - OMG there are some bad players at this level. I am not sure if I hate this hand or love it. I think if there are this many calling stations you should push the action more with your medium to big hands. In other words raise the turn and river.

Hand 9 - On a table full of calling stations raising here is spewing chips. Just flat call behind and play for set value. Oh, and fold to the flop bet too.

Hand 10 - This is the level where I start folding small PP's pre-flop as you start losing the odds to set hunt.

Hand 11 - Raise pre-flop to 500

Hand 12 - DEFINITELY raise this pre-flop against two limpers with your stack.

Hand 15 - Meh. Don't hate it, don't love it.

Hand 16 - don't minraise. Even if the table is tight make it at least 500 to go. As played I would check behind this flop as it hits his range as hard (or harder) than it hits ours.

Kd6d (between 17 and 18) - I would have stole the blinds with this hand.

Hand 19 - Why spaz out and shove here when you are, most likely, a favorite to win the hand and in reality would only get called by hands that include a 2 or 5. Give them a chance to play back at you. I would have bet about 2K and called any shove.

6h7s - Steal blinds

Hand 20 - stop minraising pre-flop, even headsup.

Ac2C - You folded this heads up to a raise? I would have AT LEAST called here and probably would have shoved over his raise.

Hand 21 - Personally I may have folded to the 3bet with 44 here as you are most likely, at best, flipping if he calls your shove, but again I don't hate it.

Hand 24 - If you are going to 3bet him just shove over his minraise.


All in all some pretty sollid play here and congrats on the win.

Saw that Gator wanted some backup on his thoughts on the first hand, so...
Hand #1 - craziness. nice that your bluff worked, but pretty much after your preflop raise, everything you did was ummm not good. I would just limp along here and see if you could hit a set and bushwack somebody. You're only a few mins into the tourney which probably helped you pull that bluff off.
I'd read the rest of your tourney, but Gator mentioned some good plays and it's late, so goodnight.

Gator, thanks a lot for your input, after reviewing what you said about several of the hands it is clear that I have some work to do. Looking back on the first hand it makes my stomach turn along with some of the other hands I didn't play that well but I guess I needed to hear it from someone else. Thanks for taking the time to help me out, I will save this thread and think about your comments in hopes that I won't repeat the same mistakes.

Don't think there's any specific post on this, so ask whatever questions you like. In this case, M is the ratio of your stack to the blinds and antes. For example, on the very first hand we have a stack of 1500 and the blinds and antes are 30 (10 SB plus 20 BB) so our M is 1500/30 = 50.
