3 $38 9-man SNG's

Results 1 to 14 of 14
  1. #1

    Default 3 $38 9-man SNG's

OK, crack team of critics (and I mean that nicely), have at you. Here are three tourneys, one for just, WTF?, and two serious ones. I was multi-tabling using Rage's script and Nakamura's advice, and just trying to get a feel for running six at once (holy cow, not there yet) and I know I made some bad decisions. Too passive sometimes, and too aggro others.

I'd love the gang's take on it.

---Tournament Summary--- OK, this one's just WTF!? The second is meatier.

You are a maniac! Be more patient. Just looking over the 3rd SNG, hands 3, 4, 10, and 13 are definite losing plays, and hands 6 and 7 are closer but probably still losing plays as well.

LOL, I think the shove with threes was a little crazy, but I'm pretty sure I'd do it again, since I was down to 13 BB, and the table was just entering push-fold mode. I've found that the first few people who shove entering PFM rarely get called. It's like the signal. The third time someone shoves, it's like, "Oh, it's PF time, right..."

I'm shoving ATC from the SB or Button when I'm at 5BB or less and if I think the blinds are calling tight. I don't see much loose bubble calling at $38.

I've experimented with the 3X raise during push-fold when I'm deep, but the 3-bet risk is too high. I sometimes throw in a 2.5X with very bad or very good hands for balance.

On the first tourney, WTF is he calling my raise with J4h for? OMG! So annoying. Then to river my str8... Ugh.

This is way above my level, but I'd like to see how you play after mcat's comments. I'll try have a look sometime.

When you say above your level, do you mean bankroll? Or meta-game? I have to assume it's bankroll. I'm playing $38's right now through the end of May to try to get to Silver on Stars (how's that for bad bankroll management?!) by the end of the month to cash out some FPP with their May Special. I think my roll really supports $16 games, and it's a little artificially low right now because I've cashed out $800 and shipped $250 to others, so I feel like my roll is $1800, not $650. If Stars had a $21 turbo, I'd be on it.

Anyway, I play these pretty much the same as the $16's so your comments would still be welcome!

In that third tourney, I was making horrible decisions in Hand 10 and 11. I could NOT believe the BB folded to my flop bet with only 45 chips behind. LOL!

I was Shocked, SHOCKED, that EeSheeBee shoved over me preflop with 2 all ins with only A5. I was stunned to see him NOT turn over aces or kings.

Note on EeSheeBee - calls down relatively light, probably has ICM running in background...

I'll have a look at your tourneys later, but if your roll is really $650 (assuming that you've spent the $800 and can't get the $250 back) then playing $38s is a recipe for going busto. I play this level (and the one below) and the ROI at this level is only slightly positive for even a good player which means that the variance and hence the chance of going busto is higher.

No, no, I have the other $1050, I just sucked it out of Stars. And, yes, I'm not looking to play at $38 past Saturday, at least until I rework the stack up. Variance and I go way back.

I tend to like 40 buy ins, which means $16 is a natural for me here, and I have the discipline to go down to $10 after a bad session.

Look forward to your comments. Though I'm seeing I should be posting under a pseudonym if you play these levels...

You don't want to have pre-programmed rules like "I always shove ATC from the SB" because even though it's correct most of the time, there are situations where it's not, this being one of them. As the 2nd place stack shoving into the 1st place stack on the bubble, you need to be much much tighter. He needs to be calling very very tight for this 64o shove to even be a breakeven play. I would recommend downloading an ICM calculator if you don't have one already, then you can see how tight he needs to be for you to shove 64o here, you'll also see that your 33 shove is bad.

I agree that the 64 shove was incorrect, and that the 33 was spewy. I appreciate the ICM love. I have PokerStove, but need to use it more. THese are the first tourneys I've run through the trimmer, and they're great for studying how awful I play sometimes! THanks again...

No, I have the bankroll, to roll on these. I'm just comfortable playing where I am. Maybe it's time to move out of the comfort zone?

    @ Naka and Rage-

Thanks for the help on the multi-table stacking thing. I've got the stacks all figured out, and it's great. I'm still making some bad decisions in the heat of it, like shoving Q3 into KK (lol), but I can manage the flow much better now that I have it all set. I even set it up for my laptop for working there, too. Thanks again...

And, yeah, get out of that comfort zone. The competition doesn't seem much different from $16 to $38. In fact, I was able to identify some REAL fish in the $38's I was playing tonight, and just take their chips. Fun times.

    My two cents....

    Tourney 1 Hand 1

I don't understand why you don't fire a semi-bluff c-bet here after you have position and he checks. A flop bet gives you a chance to win the pot outright and at least narrows his range to a K, T or the FD/SD. I would at least fire a c-bet on the turn.

The river over-bet is usually one of two things. A busted draw (and outrageous bluff) or the nuts/near nuts. The problem here is all the obvious draws have completed, so it's much more likely his hand lies on the nuts part of the spectrum. With that in mind I just call the river bet.

    Tourney 2

Hand 2 - If you are going to call a reraise from the bb, I think you should probably just raise yourself and try to play the pot HU. Of course, if you have a note that the bb tries to reraise and steal with the worst hands in range, I would probably plays the same way.

I think you are leaking 50 chips here and there by making your bet size 200 instead of 150 too frequently. You only need to do this 10-20% of the time with your weaker hands to cover the fact you are doing this with your stronger hands as well.

Hand 7 - wot? I don't think you want to be betting into that pot. I don't play the $38's so the flop line might be ok, but for heavens sake fold the turn bet. You are only beating a bluff. Stand back a bit and think if you really had a Q or 5, would you give your opp a free card on the turn to complete a SD or FD? Probably not, and that basis he probably doesn't put you on a 5 or Q. If he is thinking on this deeper level, he may throw in a complete bluff on a turn here. Throw in the fact you might still have to face a river bet, l don't think you can profitably call here.

Hand 8 - Too loose I would say. You don't have the stack to be raising 450 and folding. At least save some chips and raise to 400.

Hand 9 - The push with Q7o is ok. Your opp your need to be calling around 30%, which is going to include a lot of not so pretty hands, like K6s.

    Tourney 3

Hand 1 - Can you explain your thought process here. 80 to go into a pot of 210. Are you considering he has AK, KK or AA and therefore there are severe reverse implied odds?

Hand 2 - This is probably looser than what I would raise here, but I have no experience at this level.

Hand 3 - Pushing with 33 seems leaky.

Hand 4 - This seems a bit too wide. I'd also push with that stack size, since you obviously have to follow the hand through.

Hand 6 - Too wide from this position. You need to be in a later position to make this play.

Hand 7 - Probably closer. Your opponents' calling ranges would have to be very tight and even then it's like +0.2%.

Hand 8 - Not too sure you want to call here with QTo. The blinds are going up soon and you need to conserve chips.

Hand 11 - I think you are going to find you can easily be exploited by a bigger stack with a weaker hand. Fold pre IMO, as losing 800 chips is a disaster here.

Between hand 14 and 15 - 42o from the sb. I'm curious as to why you push 64o in the earlier orbit and fold 42o here. Both hands are likely only getting calls from 2 overs. Are you worried about your image here?

Between hand 16 and 17 - J5o. It seems like you can't really afford to fold this. I would need to be able to see the stack sizes though.

    @Nak:

Awesome feedback, thanks! I am loving it.

Hand 7, Wot?! - Yeah, bad play, and I remember making it. I had this little voice in my head saying, "He ain't got no queen..." Dumbass play there... That was part of the multi-tabling stretch of horrible decisions. I remember it, going, "AH! Just call! Next table!" After my session last night, I've gotten much more comfortable with running the stacks.

Hand 1, tourney 3, facing min-3-bet with AQ, I have just seen that be QQ+ (not even AK that often), and against an unknown entity this early, it was just safer to let it go and pay attention to him.

Hand 2, QJ, yeah, a little loose technically but I had been quiet for a full orbit, and thought it would get respect, given how the table had been playing. There was a lot of really tentative passive play. Every hand the prior orbit was played scared. Then, two hands later, with the 3s, I shove because, well, I thought I could. It was the (or one of the) first pre-flop all in of the tourney I believe.

I see I'm a leaky on the loose shoving ranges, so I need to study up on that. I'm often too tentative with some hands in EP, like A6o or JTo, and too loose with 46o on the button, because I think calling ranges are VERY tight, probably too much so, so I try to exploit it if I see it.

Hand 11 - you would really fold there? A9 and a chance to knock out 2 players? I felt a call was better than a shove because EeSheeBee isn't calling the 825 with anything different than he'd call my overshove, and if he does wake up with a hand, I'm toast. As it stood, he felt obliged to overshove with A5(!), but oh well.

Hand 14-15, 4-2, yeah, I had been active, and I don't always shove 64o. I try to play to my image and tighten up based on that. It's usually successful, but obv, I have some leaks because my "I haven't played a hand in awhile, they'll respect a raise" standards are definitely too loose.

Again, thanks for the input. I'm on the way to formidability!
