My first full SNG since finding FTR - Rip me to shreds!

Default My first full SNG since finding FTR - Rip me to shreds!

Ok this is my first full SNG (2nd overall, see my other thread for the first one!) since finding FTR and taking a two day break from playing in order to digest the wealth of knowledge on this site.

Before I get to the trimmed results I want to give a few thoughts. First I think taking two days off and just reading everything might have been a mistake. Even though I ended up winning I definitely made some dumb plays. I made those plays because I had all this new knowledge rolling around in my head that I was trying to reconcile on each move.

I'm thinking the smarter thing to have done would have been to pick just a few items to work on and then put them into practice on the tables, then go back and pick up some more. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Trying to cram everything in at once definitely made things way more difficult then it needed to be I think.

Finally I've picked out 4 hands that I thought were of in need of further review:

Hand 2 - UTG raised to 3.5bb MP1 called and I re-raised to 600. When UTG re-raised AI and MP1 called I probably should have put one of them on AA KK QQ. Especially since this was 2nd hand and I had really no information to make a read here. Yes my call turned out to be right but can I really say it was right if I had no information to make that call?

Hand 8 - I'm in the SB and I kicked it up to 4bb and got two callers. On the weak flop I put out a largish CBet and still got two callers. At this point I'm ready to lay it down if I don't improve on the turn but I hit my TPTK. Now here's where I think I made the wrong move. I was thinking one of these two call stations might have had A10, A7 or A3 and might call me. What I didn't even consider was the sleeper set letting me hang myself. Now of course I still should have made a large bet to push out the flush draw. But my AI puts me at risk unnecessarily and maybe if I don't shove I get the Ax to come along for the ride.

Hand 27 - While villain was short stacked and I did have a pocket pair I'm not sure I should have waled my 9's so strongly and maybe should have given him a higher range. Could go 50-50 on this, maybe one of you math wizz's could give me a better idea here.

Hand 30 - I made a total donk call and I should have lost it.

Hopefully I'm being my own worst critic cuz lord knows my game is full of leaks. Please feel free to rip me up one side and down the other. I think I've made a step in the right direction when I can sit back and see my own stupid plays but I'm sure for every 1 of those that I spot I'm probably still making another 10 I don't see.

Haven't read your own review, but here's mine. Some general comments:

    - You don't raise enough from the SB with the big stack once blinds get worth stealing. Remember there's only one player to act before you take the blinds down, don't fold your SB so much.
    - Once blinds get to 50/100 you can raise 2.5x BB and have the same effect as a 3x BB raise but keep the pot smaller in case you want to c-bet a missed flop (making your c-bet proportionately smaller)
    - Generally speaking if you are raising and there are limpers in front, add 1/2-1x BB for each limper to the standard 2.5-3x BB to give yourself a bit more fold equity, particularly if you are stealing
    - Otherwise I think your preflop hand selection was OK, you mostly weren't really playing crap in the early rounds.

    1. QTo - just let it go with the limper in front. In fact, I would probably just let it go even if there wasn't the limper, you're not in great position and your hand is crappy. Fold!

    2. JJ - I probably just shove it right here, particularly with the cold caller. If the UTG raiser was known to be tight I'd just flat call and try to hit a set or overpair. I really don't like raising less than all-in here as you're pretty much priced in to call if somebody shoves over.

Kh 9d Button (Hero's M = 47.73; f+f+f+F+c+s+s+s+b+f) (between 2 and 3) - you can probably raise this up since it's folded to you on the button and you have the big stack

    3. J2o - definitely bet the flop rather than checking. Even though the board is not drawy, your bottom pair can get counterfeited if the board pairs so you want to bet out. As played, turn check is fine but your river bet is pointless - why bet like 20% of the pot, what are you hoping to achieve? If you believe you have the best hand, bet 1/2 pot, if not then check and see what opp does. The turn and river are very bad cards for you and part of the reason you should have bet the flop rather than checking.

    6. AKs - why did you use the "bet pot" button? There is no reason to use this button. I would have bet about 600 to give them the wrong odds to chase but not chase them away.

    7. ATo - raise is fine but I'd make it a little more - since you are potentially out of position postflop I'd make it 300 to try to take it down preflop.

    8. AKo - personally I don't like c-betting when you're out of position and you have >1 opponent seeing the flop. I'd check here and see what happens. As played, I would bet enough on the turn to put them all in without shoving - opps can sometimes get scared away by the "all in" on your avatar.

    9. QJo - personally I fold this from UTG. As played, bad spot - but I'd fold. There isn't much in his range you're ahead of here since he raised against you, the big stack.

8c 3s SB (Hero's M = 37.30; f+f+F) (between 11 and 12) - I'd raise this - you raise 72o from the button in Hand 12 but fold 83o from the SB (with one less player to act)?

    2s Qh SB (Hero's M = 38.30; f+f+F) (between 13 and 14) - I'd raise this one too

    15. T4o - I just check and see if I can flop something nice. Surprised you got folds here - again, I'd raise to 450-480 preflop with two limpers.

    17. A7s - I think this is OK, the other option would be to shove back preflop but I'm not sure I like that against the second stack. You have a TON of fold equity though, but at a $1.25 tourney he may make a retarded call with something like KTs which loses you both equity

    4s 4d CO (Hero's M = 25.56; f+f) (between 20 and 21) - why fold this rather than raising?

    As Ks CO (Hero's M = 26.56; f+f) (between 21 and 22) - misclick?!?!?!

    25. AJs - just shove over preflop, if you miss the flop and opp shoves you are in a difficult spot. As played, I don't think that you have any alternative to do what you did, but you could have avoided this spot by shoving over preflop

    27. 99 - you played it just fine, once you raise and get shoved over you're priced in to call the shove.

    28. 88 - as per 25, just shove preflop, if you raise less than AI and get flat called and don't hit a set or overpair on the flop you're in a tough spot

    Ks 8d Button (Hero's M = 31.23; F+r+f) (between 29 and 30) - why not raise?

    30. KQo - shove preflop, you're priced in to call a shove anyway so you might as well just shove yourself.

    32. K9o - raise is fine, but again I'd raise a little more, make it like 560 or something to go, once you get shoved over fold is fine

    34. A3s - ace-anything suited is a good hand heads up with these blinds, I'd shove over his minraise

    36. 22 - this is a hard hand to play postflop, I'd just shove preflop

    37. AQo - as per the other 3-bet less than AI hands, I'd just shove preflop since if you get flat called and miss the flop you're in a tough spot.

Other than that I think you played pretty well, well done on the win.

Thanks for the analysis! I'm pouring over it right now. Just wanted to mention one thing on my initial read through to answer your question.

    4s 4d CO (Hero's M = 25.56; f+f) (between 20 and 21) - why fold this rather than raising?
    As Ks CO (Hero's M = 26.56; f+f) (between 21 and 22) - misclick?!?!?!
Sadly that wasn't a misclick I was BB and they folded to me pre-flop

Thanks for the full blow-by-blow it's really helpful, I'm going through each hand one by one right now with your takes. Whats your opinion on my self analysis?

As I said in my review, shoving over in the first place rather than 3-betting less than all-in would have saved you from this problem. However, at a $1.25 there is no way you can put them solely on QQ+ and you're priced in to call the shove

You saw my comment, given the size of the pot and more importantly opps' remaining stack sizes I don't think shoving is terrible, but betting less than AI (but putting them both AI on the turn) may have gotten one of them to call with something you beat.

As for the "sleeper set", you can make a lot of bad decisions by assuming that somebody has a set every time. As I said, I think checking the flop is a better move against two opps.

You played it fine. Open raise is fine and when you get shoved over you're priced in to call against his range. What I mean by "priced in" is that you have to call 1360 chips to win a pot of 2400 so you only have to be about 40% to win against his range for the call to be good:

    equity win tie
    Hand 0: 48.757% 48.12% 00.63% { 55+, A9s+, ATo+ }
    Hand 1: 51.243% 50.61% 00.63% { 99 }

As I said, you should just shove over preflop and be done with it, sometimes he will show up with something that dominates you but much more often he'll fold.

I think you played this SnG well I doubt that my first SnG was anywhere near this standard. Tai has picked up everything I did - and more - but I thought I would respond to your point about 9s.

Some short stacks do camp and wait for a premium pair or AK/AQ, but they are fairly easy to spot. Most have a wide range though when the blinds are high. My thinking used to be 9s are a weak hand because they are practically dead vs TT+ and a coin flip versus 2 overcards. But when you call a shove when the blinds are high and especially if you have already put money in the pot, you are being compensated for the risk. And the villain will turn over 88 or A8- much more often than TT+ in micro SnGs in my experience.

Obviously 9s are not Aces and its probably not a good idea to call a shove from a tight big stack, if you are the second stack with 9s on the bubble. But I tend to need a reason to fold 9s these days.
