Default $4.40-180 man - Final Table for Review

My main problem at this final table was not being able to c-bet towards the end of the tournament. I was short and didn't catch any real hands to shove pre. Especially when it is 3 and 4-handed, the big stack turned into a calling station and it was really hard to play. Comments?

Hand 4: Value bet the river.

    Hand 6: Call

Hand 8: Just shove the turn
Playing big pots at small stakes.
  4. #4
    hand 6
-cant raise/fold 88 vs a 10bb shove, odds are too good

    hand 8
-bet turn so you can shove rivers (or just shove now if he has near 1 potsized bet left)

    hand 11
-generally dont want to defend much on 15bb stacks
-AQ should be well ahead of a normal persons range so just ship it in

    hand 14
-maybe you decided to open because you thought villain would spew by calling wide
-but its just too awkward playing 10bbs postflop
its definetly +ev to shove and thats your best option

    hand 16
    - you might want to take stabs in spots like this occasionally, assuming you think limper is weak

    hand 17
    - not a fan of minraising blind-vs-blind
    - you don't really want to be playing postflop with this stack
    - pretty good flop to cbet
    - shoving pre is a fine option even though its ~16bbs, although raise/folding is best if BB is a nit

    hand 18
    - ew, dont 3x
    - ew, dont raise/fold with a 10bb stack
    - easy shove pre

    hand 20
    - fine

    hand 22
    - don't hate the turn stab but i wouldn't keep bluffing especially on that river
    - gives him top pair or a straight a lot, plus he likely wont fold a pair anyway

    hand 26
    - id shove this, the guy seems to be limping way too much
    - im not sure if he's made spewy calls before but generally people fold here a lot

    hand 29
    - another shove with 10bbs

    hand 30
    - shove, even if he's calling somewhat wide, t9o is too strong

    hand 35
    - id play this the same without reads
    - hes probably limping any two and if he stabbed the flop its a perfect turn for him to continue his bluff
    - unless he's been absurdly passive calling down seems fine
  5. #5
thank you very much for taking your time to look at the hands.

yeah, this guy had been playing sick tight and I didn't want to risk another 1/3 my stack but, I should have called the shove.

    hand 8
-bet turn so you can shove rivers (or just shove now if he has near 1 potsized bet left)
I was suprised he didn't 3-bet pre when I saw AQ. I wasn't expecting an A and I didn't want to scare him off the pot. I am missing spots like getting it in on the turn, even though it would be an overbet.

    hand 11
-generally dont want to defend much on 15bb stacks
-AQ should be well ahead of a normal persons range so just ship it in
as far as i remember, this guy also didn't play many hands.

    hand 14
-maybe you decided to open because you thought villain would spew by calling wide
-but its just too awkward playing 10bbs postflop
its definetly +ev to shove and thats your best option

yes, I should have shoved pre. I decided to raise because villian was slow playing all hands. As you can see from hand 13, he checked it down. You are right, my preflop bet was actually a value bet.

    hand 16
    - you might want to take stabs in spots like this occasionally, assuming you think limper is weak
I already shoved A9 in the previous hand. Villian's limp right after my shove made me suspicious and I decided to check. Otherwise, I insta-shove.

    hand 17
    - not a fan of minraising blind-vs-blind
    - you don't really want to be playing postflop with this stack
    - pretty good flop to cbet
    - shoving pre is a fine option even though its ~16bbs, although raise/folding is best if BB is a nit
I have no idea why I minraised at this spot. It is also an excellent flop to c-bet but you know, he slowplays all his good hands. he actually did slowplay this one, too. I suspected he might have an A.

    hand 18
    - ew, dont 3x
    - ew, dont raise/fold with a 10bb stack
    - easy shove pre
I played this hand very badly. This was the first time the villian 3-bet pre. I decided to fold.

    hand 20
    - fine

    hand 22
    - don't hate the turn stab but i wouldn't keep bluffing especially on that river
    - gives him top pair or a straight a lot, plus he likely wont fold a pair anyway
I decided to take a shot on turn because if he has an A, he will call the turn bet with a draw and may fold to my double barrel if he misses the draw.

    hand 26
    - id shove this, the guy seems to be limping way too much
    - im not sure if he's made spewy calls before but generally people fold here a lot
yes, I figured it out after the game. easy shove pre.

    hand 29
    - another shove with 10bbs

    hand 30
    - shove, even if he's calling somewhat wide, t9o is too strong
wow, you think T9o is too strong here! Is it because shoving after limping looks like too strong, or you think we have FE, or we are ahead of his range?

    hand 35
    - id play this the same without reads
    - hes probably limping any two and if he stabbed the flop its a perfect turn for him to continue his bluff
    - unless he's been absurdly passive calling down seems fine
  6. #6
@hand 30: I meant to say shove pre>completing. As played you have to fold
  7. #7
I'm just going to type out what I see as I go down the MTT.

    H3: TherodManiac: calls 1200, Garlinsky: calls 1200
note that these two limp folded to your raise. Great spot to pick up value by attacking their limps later.

H4: TherodManiac limped weak again. Im curious about your flop call. Did you think this was a value call? I think your hand plays great esp with the draw but I think its important to know what your going to do on the turn. Like when the 5 comes off. What if villain fires 2/3 pot do you call, jam, fold?

H5: I will check sometimes here although Thero has shown to limp fold in the past I dont hate the raise. Its kind of a tricky flop as what do you do if he calls? I could see some draws being in his range here.

H6: You have to call this. Your getting better than 2:1 and he isn't always dominating you here.

H8: Im going broke. I would probably check flop to play the turn. If villain has a pair that didnt set that A is almost always scaring them off. As played I would shove over river.

H11: I dont really like this call. AQ isnt going to hit that often and you dont want to just check-fold post flop. I would jam over preflop.

H13: I think either jam or fold.

    H14: Jam pre flop.

H16: A I dont hate this play I just think its like, meh. You have a hand that is probably ahead of both their ranges but its not great to raise as sith is probably calling. I guess a jam is probably the most profitable. I wouldnt expect sith to show up with like A9+ here like ever.

H17: this is another weird spot. Im pretty sure its +EV to shove this even though the dude in the BB is kind of spewy. I would prefer a fold over a raise. I dont think its good to generally lose 10% of your stack where you really have no chance of winning post. I think if you raise pf you almost always have to bet this flop with your stack. Interesting spot though.

H18: Dont raise fold with this stack size, shove.

H20: Smaller raise size pf. This looks like the first time you have 3x pf?

H21: I like raise size but I think this is a shove or fold spot. I also think its pretty close to which one being correct.

H22: Dont pure bluff into two villains who spew chips. I mean the turn stab is ok but just c/f river.

H25: if villain block bets for draws then I like this raise. Otherwise I think youll get more value on future streets by just calling flop.

    H29: shove

H30: shove or fold (its profitable to shove)

H33: I really don't like limping in from the SB unless its for range balancing purposes. Or if you can take it away on the flop a large % of the time.

    H34: shoving is profitable

H35: If you thought you were ahead of his range then you needed to jam over somewhere here. I don't think calling to river is most profitable nor do I think its the safer play. If you were worried about not being ahead just fold turn. I like the flop call though.

H37: Your kind of stuck here. I don't think there was much else you could really do.

Anyways, I hope there is something in here that is useful to you somehow. If nothing else I hope it just sheds light on another way to play the hands. GG

This is true. However, garlinsky was one of the solid players and it also turned out that therodmaniac slow-played ALL his big hands in this FT. You've got to be careful about squeezing, especially against theodmaniac.

I think your hand plays great esp with the draw but I think its important to know what your going to do on the turn. Like when the 5 comes off. What if villain fires 2/3 pot do you call, jam, fold?
My comment above applies here again. It turned out that therodmaniac had a relatively good hand.

H5: I will check sometimes here although Thero has shown to limp fold in the past I dont hate the raise. Its kind of a tricky flop as what do you do if he calls? I could see some draws being in his range here.
I have to cbet here being the preflop raiser. this flop is pretty dry and he probably missed it, too. If I check and he bets, I will have to fold. If he calls, I'll be done with hand if the turn is blank. I suspect he folded his AK here. He might have even folded some small and medium PP's.

H6: You have to call this. Your getting better than 2:1 and he isn't always dominating you here.
I completely misplayed this hand. I should have taken time at least to calculate the odds.

H8: Im going broke. I would probably check flop to play the turn. If villain has a pair that didnt set that A is almost always scaring them off. As played I would shove over river.
His range includes several A's, this is why I bet the flop. I could could the initiative to him as well. You are right, checking might be better as he might lead with his PPs. As played, I could have shoved the turn.

H11: I dont really like this call. AQ isnt going to hit that often and you dont want to just check-fold post flop. I would jam over preflop.
the villian was playing sick tight. I'd be flipping at best.

H13: I think either jam or fold.
this probably closer to fold due ICM. big stack on my left can call my shove relatively wider.

    H14: Jam pre flop.
    the only move, indeed.

H16: A I dont hate this play I just think its like, meh. You have a hand that is probably ahead of both their ranges but its not great to raise as sith is probably calling. I guess a jam is probably the most profitable. I wouldnt expect sith to show up with like A9+ here like ever.
I just shoved the previous hand and was suspicious about sithj's immediate limp at UTG.

Interesting spot though.
    yeah, just fold pre

H18: Dont raise fold with this stack size, shove.
This is the first and the only time he reraised preflop. I don't know if this read has any meaning. It is really hard to asign a range for him at this spot. I didn't want to be dominated. I should have just shoved pre, though.

H20: Smaller raise size pf. This looks like the first time you have 3x pf?
They recently had no respect to a 2.5x or so and I wanted to try a bigger raise pre to see if I can steal the blinds.

H21: I like raise size but I think this is a shove or fold spot. I also think its pretty close to which one being correct.
It is really hard to openshove this hand at UTG, even though it is 4-handed. I think it should also be hard for others to reraise my bet because, this was my second raise in succession and I had already faced a smililar shove in the previous hand.

H22: Dont pure bluff into two villains who spew chips. I mean the turn stab is ok but just c/f river.
I decided to take a shot on turn because if he has an A, he will call the turn bet with a draw and may fold to my double barrel if he misses the draw.

H25: if villain block bets for draws then I like this raise. Otherwise I think youll get more value on future streets by just calling flop.
He might be block betting for draw but he can also do this with with middle, bottom pairs, or even pure bluff. Calling with still another player left to act is too passive and may put me in a difficult situation. By raising here I accomplish two things:
    1) I am cutting the odds of the player that is left to act.
    2) I am getting relatively cheaper info to see where I stand at, rather than c/c two more streets without being sure where my hand stands at. There is also possibiity that I can be bluffed off the pot in later streets.

    H29: shove
Is this really that simple shove against the big stack? because, the other two guys has stacks closer to mine. Shoving may be wrong due to ICM.

H30: shove or fold (its profitable to shove)

H33: I really don't like limping in from the SB unless its for range balancing purposes. Or if you can take it away on the flop a large % of the time.
He recently raised to my limping at SB and I decided to see if he does it with air or he really has something. I might limp with a strong hand at SB in future after figuring out his tendency. Raising pre might be better.

    H34: shoving is profitable

H35: If you thought you were ahead of his range then you needed to jam over somewhere here. I don't think calling to river is most profitable nor do I think its the safer play. If you were worried about not being ahead just fold turn. I like the flop call though.
I thought about this but I chose to call in order to bust his missed FD. Folding the river or even turn is way better.

H37: Your kind of stuck here. I don't think there was much else you could really do.

Anyways, I hope there is something in here that is useful to you somehow. If nothing else I hope it just sheds light on another way to play the hands. GG
yes, it definitely helps, thank you very much

I think a lot of your thought process is in the right order but the application is a little off. You have to not be afraid to go broke. A lot of the shoves I suggested were including ICM (rarely do I just look at cEV).

When you get down to final tables in 180s you don't ever really have a stack you can profitably bet fold. Nor can you really bet a ton for information. A lot of the time you will have 20bb and just be looking to fold or shove. In 180s you want to get a top 2 pay day being that is where the real profit lies in these.

This hand was a good example of what I was talking about. Even if they are calling you with a wider range. They still aren't calling you wide enough to make this not a profitable shove. The only way I could ever see this being an ICM open fold is if Seat 4: bAm0404 (16368) throws the calculations off.

To find how many BBs you really have in a hand take: sb+bb+ (ante*no of players left). Then mutliplay that number by 2/3 to find the real cost of the BB (which would leave you with 10.7bb). QJ is certainly a profitable shove here with that number (I believe Nash would say 20bb is profitable to shove).

The reoccuring issue I see in this HH is you risked too many chips in situations where you would raise and have to give up with too small of a stack size. Remember that at a FT every chip bet is worth a dollar amount. So all the times you would bet and then lose the pot you were giving money away. Find and study the Nash equilibrium (focus a lot more on the push/fold aspect). It will give you a big edge over your buyin level.

I just wanted to bring this up. Ok so your read is that he limps weak hands and ok strong hands (aka he is basically tight passive. Except when he open bets he is at the top of his range and you just fold everything.) You also noticed that he will bet out multiple streets with middle pair top kicker. Your goal should be to adjust to this player and value him to death with almost any top pair+ hand. Always be looking for player types and how to adjust to them. Its the best way to extract value and your reading skills will develop much faster. Knowing a range is good but knowing how a player plays that range is much, much better.

Wow, that ended up being much longer than I intended

[quote="revolvingiris"]This final table was especially tough for me when it was 4-5 handed. I should work more on push/fold strategy.

I'll check it out. In HOH2, as far as I remember, Harrington says in order to find the true M, we should multiply our M with n/9, where n is the number of players left. So, lets say if it is 3 handed:

    M= 3/9[your stack/(BB+SB+antes)]

This formula actually makes it an even easier push.

M is the amount of orbits you can withstand with your current chip stack including the blinds+antes.

I was talking about your "true BB" which I believe is found using the equation I sloppily posted above. (SB+BB) + (ante*# of players) * (2/3) = true BB; true BB/Stack= how many BBs you have in your stack.
