    Default Too tight?

9 left, 50/100, 1400 stack. A10o or AJo in MP. Raise or fold? I've been folding these but I'm concerned that's too tight.

STT by the way, so 9 left means only one out.

When you say MP, do you mean early MP or late MP? Either way, I'd raise the AJo to 2.5x BB, fold the ATo in early MP but raise it in late MP.

With 14x BB, your stack is very close to the point where you need to either shove or fold preflop. With 13x BB I'd be shoving or folding.

When raising would take you're stack under 10bb i would shove or fold. As Taipan said position matters. Enter the exact position etc to an icm calculator for example at holdemresources, sry cant post link becos ive got under 10 posts

If there are that many players left I can assume everyone is playing weak tight. So I would try to become the aggressor at that table and begin raising with hands like that. Every table I play I take chances to see how wide I can raise. I try to identify who behind me calls raises and with what range. Sometimes the answer is no one. Often they will only call only with premium hands and hit it or fold it on the flop, giving up to my natural Cbet. So the first question to ask is can I become the aggressor at this table? With the blinds at this level and even chip stacks its time to start chipping up. Break from the pack. Steal blind after blind. Don't put yourself in a position of needing cards to win. Don't sit on your hands and wait for your turn. Its your turn when you say so. Give it a little gas. The game goes to the aggressive.

This is fine as a generalisation, but the OP's question is quite situation specific. Probably not the best spot to get aggressive with hands like ATo from UTG when there are 8 players remaining to act. Plus chip stacks are awkward, if you raise and get called, the preflop raise + the c-bet is quite a large proportion of your stack if you have to give it up to a flop shove over.

I think the reason I've been folding them is that with 50/100 and 9 left, there are always 2 or 3 with under 10bbs and I don't want to get shoved for 600/700 more and be left in a pickle. I guess that was the question, whether that is too tight an attitude at the blind levels, because the amount of players remaining is not at a normal level.

You're making a big generalisation. If the table is very tight, I would consider raising ATo in Mp+1 for example.
It's ok to be tight in mid position. I wouldn't worry about being too tight unless it's really crushing your ROI(you're getting blinded out or something). If you feel too nitty you can always make up for it by opening wider on the btn for instance.

    I see what you're saying. I've got to ask, what's MP+1?

    9 players left:
    seat 1 - UTG(under the gun)
    seat 2 - UTG+1
    seat 3 - MP(middle position)
    seat 4 - MP+1
    seat 5 - MP+2 (Hijack)
    seat 6 - CO(cutoff)
    seat 7 - Button
    seat 8 - SB
    seat 9 - BB

So MP+1 is 4 seats away from the big blind.

I think the generalization is more important than the specific answer. As to the specific question AT or AJ in mp? yes raise.
