So for the first year, she's all like "poker is gambling, gambling is bad, yadda yadda yadda....(not listening)".

Then she sees some money from it and she's like "hmmm, this poker thing aint half bad, but I don't like you spending all your time on it, what about our quality time, yadda yadda yadda (not listening)".

Now she suddenly wants me to teach her to play so she can get in on it.

Anyone ever taugnt there wife/gf to play? How'd it work out? Anything to be aware of? Good side? Bad side?

(Also be aware that I'm not that good, I kick ass at 5nl, but haven't had the time to play enough to move up - although I have a 3 year plan to becomming a pro lol)

Eventually I learned that all she wants is to know how the game is played enough so she can keep up and have fun. She's tends to be the fish at the table, but as long as the stakes are low she has fun and has the nights that all fish have occasionally where they can't do anything wrong and then she really has fun.

Basically, find out what her goals are and help her reach them. Don't make your goals hers and it'll all work out.

This is a great idea. You should definitely do it. Your skill in playing easily equates to your skill in teaching. The other reason to do this is that poker is a thinking game where you leave emotion out. Women are very good at ignoring emotions which is why chick flicks are action/adventure movies with lots of special effects.

i taught my girlfriend the basics:
1 - hand rankings
2 - folding pre-flop
3 - raising pre-flop
4 - counting outs

she came to a home game, armed with her list of hand rankings. I paid her entry. She won. She repaid her entry. She roughly understands poker.
there is a huge difference between knowing how to play poker and knowing how to win.

Teach her how to play, and a very few basics. If she's still interested then point her at the beginner circle stickies/digest articles. Let her look at your sessions, tell you what YOU did wrong - she'll improve even more quickly that way, think about it. She has serious motivation - she gets to tell you how stupid you are....
