    Default My Bankroll

    Hello guys,

This is my first post on here, probably a question many of you have seen before but i'll ask anyway....

I have $297 in my bankroll having grinded up from $150 playing $5 stts. Is now a good time to be moving up to $10? I have experimented in a few and won one and cashed in a couple others. However i'm not sure if it is that i'm uncomfortable playing these stakes but the play seems alot better, even though it is only a $5 hike from what i was playing.

So is it a good idea to start and maybe if my roll goes below $200 drop back down to $5?

It was suggested in another post (I think it may be in the digest somewhere) that when you're starting to feel ready to move up, continue playing at your normal stakes with a few higher stake games thrown in.

When you win a $5, play a $10 after that, if you cash, play another $10, if not, play a $5 until you cash again. Or if you multitable, play your regular stakes with one $10 in there until you feel completely comfortable at that level.

I personally would want a bit more than 30 buyins if you're going to completely move up, but that's more about personal preference.

I'm currently in about the same situation, trying to move up from $6.50 STTs.

    Hello thanks for the post

Yeah I think that sounds like a good idea, I think I need a few more BI's before I take up $10 as my regular stake.

Deciding (preferrably writing down) your bankroll strategy and then adhering to this strategy is far more important than the exact numbers in this strategy. $200 seems like a nice point at which to abort mission, but $185 or $222 would be neither better nor worse. It's really up to you and where you feel comfortable.

Hi and welcome to FTR, it's good to have you here. For me, moving up is both a confidence and a bankroll thing. In poker it is important that you think about the best decisions you can make rather than the money when you are playing - if you start worrying about the money you'll make sub-optimal decisions.

I think that BrassLacquer's suggestion is good and is in fact what I did when I moved up.

    Thanks for the replies guys,
taipan you make a good point about worrying about the money. I think I have been so comfortable playing $5.50 that now i'm trying to move up the second I lose a $11 i'm immediately thinking "damn that was 2 sngs at my normal stakes"
Anyway thanks for the advice on this subject, I will be using it wisely!

Another thing is make sure you stick to your game. This is actually harder to do
    than you'd think.

What I mean is if there is a gamble for all your chips which you would shove with
or call a shove with in a $5 make sure you do it in a $10 (say open ended straight draw, plus a flush draw and an overcard for example).

I made the mistake a few times when I first started moving up limits. I was trying to
preserve my chips as I didnt want to bust out where as at my normal limit I wouldn't
have blinked about making the play because it was the right play.

As for throwing in the odd $10 and back to $5 if u lose - perfect - exactly what I did aswell.
