$5.20 T-DON: Is hoping to collude early (10-handed) -EV?
URL for the hand in question is http://www.flopturnriver.com/Poker-Hand-AhKc-Tournament-Button-1179285.php
I wanted to hide the results, but I couldn't figure out how.
Background: I'm the button with AKo, and I have solid reads on my SB and BB who are both equally stacked and are solid grinders. Therefore, I knew that it was very unlikely that either of them would call the Short Stack's 6.67BB AI, and neither would they challenge my potential call/push action (unless they woke up with KK or AA). I didn't want to let this great opportunity to bust the shorty pass by, with a solid hand and only a small portion of my stack at risk. I didn't have any read on the Villain, who 3BB open raised, who knew full well that a shorty was right around the corner. I interpreted the Villain's action as either a trap for the shorty, and/or an open invitation for collusion from others to help take down the shorty.
I was also a little bit on tilt from 3 previous games, where my AA, AA, and AKs hands were all cracked very early. I am also a big fan of collusion in the DON format, though ideally it is on the 7 or 6 bubble and where my chip stack is relatively more large.
I make TPTK on the minimally-coordinated flop; Villain checks to me. I wasn't in any mood to get cute or creative, so I was happy to check down what was likely to be the best hand and what would likely beat the shorty. I honestly believed the Villain's check to be a gesture of good will, as was mine.
The turn is a brick, unless Villain had 53, A4, T4, or 34. Villain bets 120 into a 645 pot; this bet utterly confounded and surprised me. If he had checked, I would have checked it down again. If he had pushed instead, I would probably have called AI because I was on tilt and because I would have interpreted his action(s) as donkalicious, with my hand likely being better.
I pushed AI, 1190 more (Villain has me covered by 120). I certainly couldn't fold right here. A call of his 120 bet might put a stop to a river bet from him, though it might also entice him to river bet, seeing my 120 call as weak. I didn't want to take that chance, and I literally wanted to shove it in his face. So I shoved my chips in his face.
The results are irrelevant, though they are visible on the hand history page.
What of my actions and thought processes are of most concern? Should I have folded my AKo PF and just let the Villain go after the Short Stack (since he would 100% call the 110 more)? Was just calling the Short Stack' AI, with Villain's next action still to follow, a too weak and -EV of a move, that just invited donkalicious actions? Was pushing AI PF my most viable option, and if a donk calls, a donk calls? Were my hopes of colluding down the Short Stack this early into the game a gravely misguided tactical decision, which might be -EV in the long run? Should I have pushed on the flop when Villain checked to me, instead of pursuing collusion?
Thanks for taking the time to share some of your thoughts! I'm still relatively new to online poker, especially the unique microcosm that is turbo DON.
