Beating regs...
We all know that bad players make us money. I Sharkscope every table and colour code every reg for future use. I've been doing this for a while and at the stakes I play know (recognise) most of them with the odd new one popping up every now and then.
For a while I would play an absolute max of say 3 regulars and unregister if it was 4+. I probably dont need to mention why but will do for the sake of the whole post...
It's not about being scared or are they better than me it's just with SNGs being so mathematical it's ridiculous to play ppl playing a similar (optimal) strategy for obvious reasons. I want to play against ppl that shove all in / call an all-in shove at 25 / 50, ppl that play too many hands that you can rinse for value, ppl that don't defend their blinds enough etc etc.
For a while there were enough about and I'm sure we've all been in SNGs where u can do pretty much nothing and be down to say 5 ppl without much fuss and with a playable stack without even playing a hand.
But recently to avoid regs I have to play at different times in the day but when I want to play most of my poker there are recently loads of them on.
So like most of poker it's about shifting your focus. I can't just avoid every table with them and I've started having to play tables with say 3 regs and a lot of the time barring suckouts you often get down to the bubble and its you and them 3.
This is a nightmare as every1 is shoving and re-shoving on everyone and it often comes down to waiting for 2 big hands to clash - not ideal.
So if there is a similar post I do apologise as I've not noticed one but for now I'd appreciate some discussion about how to exploit these players.
I'll start with some stuff I've been thinking about.
- Raising their blinds more. A lot of them that I play have a high "fold blind to steal %" So would it be profitable to maybe raise their blinds more with a wider range? This can't be done too much but maybe just try and get the blinds maybe every other orbit or so? Like I say I'm just playing with ideas so bear with me a bit. And you can't make it obvious or they will just 3-bet / shove on you. And maybe a bit more from say hijack so it doesnt just look like a button steal?
- 3 bet them more. I've noticed that these players "fold to 3-bet %" is massive. Some as high as 90%+. I'm not saying it's bad, far from it. SNGs are short stacked games so you don't want to go to war or flat a 3-bet with say AJ, KQs or maybe even hands as strong as say 99. Plus a 4-bet all in early to mid stages in a SNG just doesnt happen with maybe any less than say 5% of their range. To expand on exactly how effective this could be I've noticed some players and folding to my 3-bet even if it's minimum so I can't be 3-betting enough. So maybe strike a balance and maybe 3-bet some suited connectors? As they could flat with say AQs. I don't want this to merge into MTT strategy I just think it's possible to incorporate a few more "steals" this way.
- This is an interesting one if slightly high variance. Call to bust them if the other players are bad. I'll post a hand when I can get a good example but to try and explain say maybe blinds are 50 / 100 and I've got 3K. They shove on me for maybe 1.1K. So bad odds but could it be worth calling to bust them with like 910s or something similar? If the other players are bad and I could get rid of my best opponent? Plus I'd have a stack to contend with should I lose? Like I said I'm just throwing some ideas out so don't berate me with regards to ICM! I'm just looking at the bigger picture.
Well these are just a few. Comments welcome. It's just that I can't ignore these guys anymore as otherwise I wouldn't be able to find a game. Plus quite a few I play with multi-table like 10+ tables so they surely dont want extra tough decisions.
