Preflop raise 2x, 2.5x, 3x?

Old school player here. I'm pretty much a standard 3x preflop raiser if I'm opening the pot. +1 BB for each limper.

Also, 3bet is 3 times the raiser's raise. So 3x->9x, 4x -12x?

Was watching the main event and was really surprise to see so much 2x-ish raises and 2-ish times 3 bets.

Am I behind the times? Is min-raise and 3bet re-raise the norm now adays?

3bet is just the 3rd bet. So if someone raises preflop and you re-raise, that's a 3bet, regardless of the size. On the flop it's if there's a bet, a raise and a re-raise.

I meant are 3bets now adays typically the same amount times the raise.

In years past min-rasing would cause more players to call instead of taking down the pot uncontested. Are there less uncontested pots now adays? I would think only thinking players would fold to min-raise, fish will call more.

You don't mind too much if fish call more because they'll play really badly post flop

It all depends on how deep average stacks are. If most people are 50 bb deep or more, then a 3x open is standard. When stacks get short, say most people are sitting under 20 bb, then opening for 3x is risking too much, and a raise of 2.5x is going to accomplish the same thing. When stacks get very short, then a min-raise is the same as a PSB pre-flop.

It's all about how much you risk to play your hand without giving away free cards to the BB, and how much much an opponent has to risk to call.

If you're a smart cookie, you can really extend your stack in tournaments with this.

Depends. In today's gauntlet, I had dneuro on the bb when it was my button. First hand I raised x3 and he folded, but this was first blind level. Once antes are in, and since I know he's not a muppet, x2 opens were fine, he doesn't just call any old junk and prob 3bets wider. However, when dneuro makes a x3 button open vs crazz's bb, she calls 64o.

Me vs dneuro, I got my sizing right when attacking his blind because I was able to steal cheaply. He got his sizing right vs crazz because she calls crap to x3 opens.

Factors are stack sizes, blind levels, antes, and whoever's on the bb.
