Default Ah, Sunday morning / w coffee , a new laptop, and malware....

i woke up this morn getting ready to grind the day away. now it appears i'll be spending more time on bleeepingcomputer.com than on ftr today.

anyone else not like windows 8? wtf is all this app shit??(rhetorical...)

Since this comp is so new maybe i should just wipe it , and start w/ win7.

I have win 8 too on my new laptop, fuckers always preload their sales with the latest windows because of deals they get from microsoft. It's so obviously written for smartphones and not pc, I mean who the hell wants fullscreen aps that you can't minimize? I'm still keeping it though, combination of laziness, wanting to be legal for once in my life, and the fact that win 8 has flopped so bad that noone is writing virusses and malware for it, so you're safer by default.

Just this week I used Win 8 for the first time setting up a new laptop my wife bought. I can't believe MS thought this was a good product for PCs. But I found out that later this year they will release an update that adds back in a bunch of features that they (stupidly) removed -- start menu, boot straight to the "Desktop" instead of their gimmicky tile screen, I think there might even be a way to disable the constant random popup of the menu on the right side of the screen. It's also supposed to combine the settings back into one location, instead of having to figure out which of 2 or 3 "Settings" locations might have the option you want to change.

I've only used it super briefly (like less than an hour), once you get past the bizarre start screen thing, seemed just like win7? Or lots of shit that would annoy me if I continued to use it more?

Not really that familiar with win anyway to be fair

From what it's worth loads of people I know who use computers think windows 8 is actually quite good when you get past the original OMG THIS ISN'T WINDOWS 7 routine.

The store owner where I bought my laptop already apologetically told me when I was showing interest in buying it that they're working on an update that allows you to have your desktop as default, return the windows button, etc. You know it's gonna be bad before you even try it then. When I'm being fast it just randomly flashes to my skype, I mean fuck while I was typing this it just happened again. And where the hell is my program list? Also their skype (ap which I want to stop using anyway) is so dumbed down and moronic, fullscreen and you can't even shut it down! That's right, you need to alt-F4 it, and know that ofcourse. Having to go to the corners to do stuff is also fucked up bad. And my HEM2 stopped working since yesterday, dunno if that really about win8 or w/e but not fixed.

I tend to use keyboard shortcuts a lot. In Windows 7, I can use the Start button and type enough of the program name until it matches near the top so I can press enter to launch it. I haven't used Windows 8 very much yet, but I didn't see anything similar. In fact, Windows 8 seems like a giant leap backwards in terms of keyboard usability, which drives me nuts.

as long as you don't accidentally activate the windows 8 stuff like the full-screen apps, it's all good. so yeah it basically sucks. i still don't know how to exit a full screen app without hitting alt-f4.

we have old PC that just runs Itunes, had to re image with Win 8 after HD died.

    steps to run itunes:

    reboot, log in
panic when insane tablet interface appears
    find Itunes "button"
laugh/curse that button does not start Itunes, just takes me back to Win 7 looking desktop
start Itunes from Win 7 world
    Itunes needs an update
    reboot

LOl, I started a win8 bashing huh? Well, To add to the heap. I've only been using mine for a week, and yesterday it started acting like I'm not an Admin anymore. Any system programs, i.e. task manger, system refresh, system restore, or any software, like poker tracker i can't access, and yeah I'm def Admin User..

It's either a virus or registry problem, or both... IDK... I'm waiting for a reply on a good geek forum to fix it... NOooo fuckin way I'm payin someone $150+ to fix this bitch

I use Windows key+M (minimize all), which has been around since Windows 95. I didn't know about the Win+D shortcut.

Thanks, good to know. Looks like Win-F, Win-Q, and Win-R are pretty useful for quickly searching and launching programs. It's still a step backwards from the Win7 start menu, just not as bad as I realized.

Win+M only minimizes, while win+D you can minimize all open programs, do something on your desktop and then win+D again to restore your screens. Also win+D is the shortcut I use to go back to desktop in win 8, a quicker way than clicking the corner when my hands are on the keyboard. If you use the M-shortcut it'll return but also minimize everything. I dunno why it's there actually, it's just inferior.

If you have a touchscreen, install win8.
    If you don't have a touchscreen, don't install win8.

    Simple.

Fairly typical microsoft, every other version is a flop. Windows 9 should be good, then windows 10 will suck again.
It's like they make the changes to copy apple and then have to make it work properly in the next version.

Bought a laptop, came with a touchscreen (despite being 15"), only had it a couple of days but surprisingly impressed by the touchscreen + Windows 8. that said, i haven't used ANY of the apps or anything, just desktop mode

Talked to my aunt, she's a university professor who is retiring this year, and windows 8 came up. She had a pretty good point. Basically that if you want to reach the senior citizens audience, which is huge (with the ageing population and all), the most important thing is that things shouldn't change. She told me about this club of whatever of 16 old people, who got a new laptop with windows 8, and noone even dared to try to operate it. Once these people know how something works, don't fucking change it or you'll chase them away. Hotmail turning to outlook, everything being different in win8 etc.

I keep having to ask my younger sister how to do stuff, which is really embarrassing

"Don't change anything" definitely the most advisable way forwards for tech

But changing it means everyone has to buy it again.
    Changes make money.
